  • SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME | 3

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, One of my financial goals since I returned to Saint Kateri as Administrator

Pro Tem in November has been to return our staff members to full pay

and full hours. As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and other factors,

many of our hardworking staff members were required to have their

hours/salaries reduced due to the decrease in weekly revenue. The result

has not been a corresponding decrease in workload, but rather the necessity to accomplish the

same amount of work in fewer hours for less pay. To me this is very unfair.

Many have asked what it would take to correct this. Our bookkeeper put together an analysis of what it would take to

bring all our parish employees back to their full, pre-pandemic salary/hourly status. For the remainder of the Fiscal year,

January 2021 through June 2021, the total amount to accomplish this would be $31,529.36. This averages out to about

$1,200 per week of increased revenue.

If, and when, we are able to achieve a sustained revenue stream of an additional $1,200 per week, we will be able to

restore our staff members to their fair and just wages.

When I mention employees, they are people many of you know personally.

These are the people who answer the phone when you call because a loved one is sick and needs to be visited by a priest.

These are the people who coordinate all our sacramental formation, preparation and coordination, from Baptism to the

    Anointing of the Sick.

These are the people who deal with the day-to-day management of the parish involving financial, personnel,

    maintenance and Liturgical responsibilities.

These positions are critical to the smooth and efficient management of all parish functions.

My next financial goal, after restoring our current employees, is to fill some of the positions that have been vacated due

to decreased hours and salaries. These positions need to be filled to complete our staffing requirements and our parish

mission. Currently we have no Music Minister, no Youth Minister, no Outreach Minister. We do have a former employee

who will be returning as a volunteer to coordinate our Evangelization efforts. This is truly a blessing for all of us!

However, there is much more to do as we hopefully return to normal parish operations moving forward.

Your generosity since the beginning of our parish has been phenomenal!!! We have done wonderful things together,

more than there is room to mention here. Suffice to say, we have done it

in the past and we can do it again…together. It is time to put whatever

differences we may have had in the past behind us and move forward…

    together.

My dear friends, I personally thank each of you for all that you have done

in the past and I admire your loyalty and commitment. Together let us

take on this financial challenge and begin the process of restoring our

    wonderful parish.

    Deacon Bob Seidler

    Administrator Pro Tempore

    *Note: New budget not final.

Dear Friends: As we cautiously enter 2021, we are reminded that nothing but God’s saving grace is promised. Looking back, last year was an exceptionally

difficult year. Looking ahead, let us be the light in the darkness living in and offering hope. As intentional disciples we are committed to being a neighbor to others; actively doing what is right, standing up for what is right and just, actively servicing and supporting others with grace and dignity. While we are restricted from travel in an effort to save lives, I invite you to join me on an imaginary journey. Welcome aboard Flight 2021, God is our Captain and I am your flight attendant. We are preparing to take off in to the New Year! Please make sure that your attitude blessings are secured and locked in the upright position. All self-destructive devices should be turned off at this time. All negativity and discouragement should be stored away. We have removed the excess baggage that has been flying with us on Flight 2020 and are hopeful that our flight to our future destinations will be a smooth one. Should we lose altitude under pressure and turbulence during flight, please reach up and pull down a prayer. Prayers will automatically be activated by faith. Once your faith is activated, you can assist other passengers. Remember…there is no return policy on time, so make every minute count! The New Year offers each of us 365 blank pages, so write the most beautiful chapter of your life with God as your guide! We have been cleared for take-off! Wishing you good health, happiness, and the light of Christ in 2021. May your heart always be the temple of the Holy Spirit. May the Peace and Spirit of Christ reside within you and your home. And may your encounter with others, at home, in your neighborhood and/or community, radiate the face, voice and spirit of God throughout the year. Keep the faith!

Happy New Year from the Operations Staff! Please join us in wishing Luke Leonard Godspeed. Luke’s last day with us was December 14 as he focuses on completing his undergraduate degree and exploring what God is calling him to do.

All the best for a bright future! We will miss you!

    OUTREACH

Building a strong parent-teen relationship As pandemic lockdowns continue, parents and teenage children are spending more and more time together. It is not always easy to connect with teens, because they often feel their parents do not understand them and prefer to confide in their friends instead. Nevertheless, the time at home offers an opportunity for parent-teen relationships to evolve and for trust to grow in developmentally appropriate ways. Teens need the guidance and support of a parent as an important balance to the permissive understanding of a “friendship” relationship. As children become teenagers, parental authority does not diminish, but may be better served by involving the teens in a dialogue about rules and limits. For more information on building relationships with your teenagers, visit https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.

Families Help One Another to Know and Follow Jesus

In today’s Gospel we learn about one of at least two family relations that appear among Jesus’ first disciples. Andrew is the brother of Simon, whom Jesus renames Peter. In next week’s Gospel, we will learn about the brothers James and John, the sons of Zebedee. We know from the letters of Paul and other witnesses to the early Church that it was a common occurrence for an entire household to be baptized together. From the very beginning of the Church, families helped one another to know and follow Jesus. We hope and pray that this continues to be true in our family life.

Before your family gathers, look around your house and gather some items that your family might have that remind you of your faith. Perhaps you have a cross or crucifix displayed in your home, a statue of Mary, or statues or other art depicting saints.

In today’s Gospel we learn about how Andrew led his brother, Simon, to Jesus. Read today’s Gospel, John 1:35-42.

In our family life, we also help to lead one another to Jesus. Talk together about the items that you gathered, discussing what these items mean to you and how you might use them during the day for prayer. Pray that your family will continue to help one another grow in our faith in Jesus. Pray together the Glory Be to the Father. Second Sunday of Ordinary Time, Cycle B Loyola Press

    YOUTH MINISTRY

Life Teen message from Kelly Dunnahoo Christmas is over. Today is the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time. But, wait a minute – what happened to the First Sunday of Ordinary Time? Well, we never actually have a First Sunday of Ordinary Time because we always celebrate either Epiphany or the Baptism of the Lord on that day and a Feast Day always supersedes a Sunday of Ordinary Time. How’s that for a nice piece of Catholic trivia? As we continue through this liturgical year, we will hear a lot from the Gospel of Mark, although today’s Gospel reading is a very important one from the Gospel of John – the calling of the disciples. I always find it amazing that the disciples followed Jesus so willingly. We don’t know the details of their conversations with Jesus, but it only took a few hours for them to realize that He was the Messiah. In another account, James and John were helping their father mend their fishing nets when Jesus came along and asked for them to follow Him. So they just left their father with all of the work and decided to follow this stranger around instead! There must have been something very compelling about being in the presence of Jesus. Something that is not related in the Gospel stories. Although, is that very surprising since Jesus is God? I wonder what I would have done in that situation. Would I have recognized the Messiah or would I have just thought he was some sort of odd person that I should disregard? We are fortunate today that we have received the gift of the Holy Spirit through baptism and the theological virtue of faith that comes along with it. Our hearts have been prepared to receive the Word of God. God is continually calling us. We know who He is. We just have to answer His call. He is calling us to follow Him. We are called to be a new creation, reject sin, and further His Kingdom through our words and actions. Sadly, too many people reject that call either explicitly or implicitly. An explicit rejection is one in which someone knowingly rejects God and His invitation to follow Him. An implicit rejection is a bit harder to understand and one that we all fall into from time to time. Do we make ourselves so busy that we don’t have time for God? Do we not trust in His promises? Are we more fascinated by sinful things than by holy things? Self-reflection is important. I encourage you to reflect on these questions and answer them honestly to yourself. If you answer yes to these or similar questions, don’t be alarmed. Instead, be grateful for a God that loves you more than you can ever understand and who wants you with Him for eternity. A God that will help you overcome these things, if you ask for His help. Life Teen is a community for teenagers where we help each other, through support and prayer, to follow God’s call. Unfortunately, we are not able to meet during the pandemic. However, the adult volunteers remain committed to supporting our teenagers whenever possible. If you would like to pray with two of the adult volunteers, please e-mail me at [email protected] and I will set up a Zoom meeting for you.
