FT What’s New?

JHMR is proposing the following projects for construction over the next three years pending for-est service approval. This week we will feature updates and new installations for our chair lifts. A very brief description of each improvement is given below.

Ashley Ridge trail:JHMR is planning to upgrade and widen the upper portion of Ashley Ridge trail and realign the lower portion of the run below South Pass traverse. The bottom of the run would be ex-tended downhill and would tie into the top of the existing Antelope Flats trail. This design would allow advanced skiers to access the base area on a trail other than the crowded Lower Werner run.

Wide Open run: With the installation of the new Teton lift next summer there would be the need to create ad-ditional advanced intermediate trails. To accomplish this we are planning to extend the existing Wide Open run uphill and connect it to the top of the unload area at the top of the Teton lift.

Washakie run:This new run would follow the fall line from a point just east of top of the Teton lift down to Togwotee Pass Traverse adjacent to the Teton lift. Initially this run would be extensively gladed and utilized for several seasons to determine whether more improvement to the run is war-ranted.

Grizzly Glade run:With the installation of the Teton chairlift, it is desired to provide more skiing terrain on Mo-ran Face by glading this area. The concept behind this project is to connect existing treeless openings with one another while keeping the natural look of the area. This would be accom-plished by selectively removing trees in dense stands and brush cutting.

Solitude run:To provide additional advanced intermediate terrain served by the new Teton lift, we plan to create a new trail adjacent to the existing Moran run. It will be several years before this run is fully developed.

FT Always an Ambassador

At the same time I sat down to write this week’s addition of Always an Ambassador the little badge that comes up in the right hand corner of my computer flashed showing me I had a new

email (is there a name for that?). I had been copied on an email that helped unclog my writers-block; I would like to share part of it with you.

Hi Jerry: I wanted to write for a variety of reasons, all of which are complimentary. You are doing a ter-rific job of implementing the branding strategy which was originally articulated many years ago, but which we restated and updated in 2005 to include valuable “customer service” compo-nents. The customer outreach you are providing seems almost unparalleled from my experi-ence in the ski industry. I’ll just mention three examples to make my case: ( I am sharing only one)Finally, while skiing during the Christmas Holidays I fell and dislocated my shoulder — yep, it torqued right out of the socket. it was painful and aggravating. I wish I could tell you I was doing a backscratcher or some sort of double daffy. Or that I was coming down a chute. Nope. It happened on lower Werner. I got excellent help from three ski instructors who were the first on the scene. They offered to get the ski patrol and a sled (I was too proud for that). Then they helped me get my skis back on, helped me to my feet, constantly offered the services of the ski patrol (pride is an ugly thing). Then they made sure I could get off the mountain on my own. At the Village clinic, Suzanne Hagerman of the ski patrol was a key part of the medical help I received. Then, to top it off (we are back to the brand here), I received a post card from Suzanne and the entire ski patrol, hoping that my rehab and recovery was going well. From a branding standpoint, this is great stuff.

Thank you instructors that helped Bob on the hill, thank you Suzanne for your excellent care, Thank you Ski patrol for taking it one step further. And of course, thank you Jerry! You are all

Ambassadors.

Guest Comments

“The snow was fantastic, everyone spoke to me when I approached a lift, nice to have people smiling at me and ready to answer questions or give some advice whenever I arrived at the centre.”

“I took group ski lessons last Sunday and Wednesday with the expert group. Matty L. and For-est were exceptional instructors and made those days very enjoyable, not to mention getting better at skiing to boot!”

“I have skied at many places and I have never had more friendly workers as you have at Jack-son Hole. They were so helpful. On several of my lift rides, one of your guides rode with us and they always gave great advice on the best runs to take.”

To whom it may concern,

I am writing to thank the resort and all of the staff involved with supporting the race last weekend. Jackson is THE venue for that race capping off a great race weekend. All of the staff that I encountered, from patrol to hosts were great in keeping an eye on our safety while regular operations were ongoing and others (lift ops, F&B) were all encouraging and friendly. Thank you for your support and hosting this great event. Please continue to host this event and please forward this to any departments or personnel to be recognized for their efforts and help.

Thanks again, Toph

Health Care Corner:

Battling January Gym CrowdsFor those who make it a New Year’s goal to exercise more, working out in January can quickly test their resolve as throngs of people pack the gym with the same goal in mind. But since half the country lives where it’s too cold to exercise outdoors during winter, how else can wannabe fitness fanatics get their workouts in? Here’s how:Be flexible. Whether you like to use the gym at a specific time or go about your workout a certain way, you need to be open to altering your routine. If manageable, try going before work, during your lunch break or later at night. When at the gym, make use of the available machines and free weights while watching occupied equipment to see when it becomes available.“Work in” exercise between someone else’s sets. While not the most appealing option for many, allowing another member to use a machine while someone is resting between sets is considered good gym etiquette. All you need to do is ask. Think outside the gym. Avoid the hassles altogether by finding another place to exercise. Rock climbing centers, dance and yoga studios and even bowling alleys can provide you with some level of exercise while you wait for the gym crowds to subside. Even the most frigid locales have some winter days that are nice enough to allow for a jog outside, provided you dress appropri-ately. And that snow isn’t going to shovel itself!

• Enough plastic is produced in the United States each year to shrink wrap Texas.

• In 1998 Americans used 2 billion pounds of HDPE to make plastic bottles for household products. That’s the equivalent weight of 90,000 Honda civics.

• Approximately 88 % of the energy is saved when plastic is made from plastic rather than from the raw materials of gas and oil.

• Enough plastic bottles are thrown away in the Unit-ed States each year to circle the Earth four times.

Vertical Harvest Breaks Ground in Jackson Hole , WY.A State-Of-The-Art Three-Story Commercial Greenhouse in U.S.JHMR is a one of only 2 major early corporate donors to this project and has donated close to $30K via our 1% for the Planet funds over the past two years from Couloir and the DeckHere is the release that was released nationally at the time of Ground Breaking in December. Look for future updates of the project in First Tracks. See images from the event below.

Vertical Harvest will be the first three-story, 13,500 square-foot hydroponic green house built in the United States operating year round to sell, fresh, locally grown produce to the Jackson Hole community through mul-tiple venues at a competitive and consistent price. Vertical Harvest will provide inclusive employment year round for citizens with disabilities and be a self sufficient for profit business that will serve to set new standards in architecture, growing and employment. Vertical Harvest will sit on a 30’ x 150’ downtown plot providing an urban planning solution to food production while setting new standards with the “vertical” nature of the architecture and green house growing systems. “It’s the first of its kind in the country,” says Vertical Harvest co-founder and architect Nona Yehia of Jackson-based E/Ye Design. “This building is exciting in that it wraps social, architectural, and agricultural innovations into one dynamic project.” Even the business model for Vertical Harvest is pioneering. It has been set up as a LCCC, a for-profit organi-zation that includes a social mission. “We feel it is critical for the long term sustainability of the business and important for the employees to be engaged in a for-profit structure,” stated Penny McBride, Vertical Harvest co-founder and business partner with Yehia. Through a combination of private equity, grants (the largest from the Wyoming Business Council), the Town of Jackson support and local “seed funders”, the founders raised nearly $4 million prior to the groundbreaking this week. At the ceremony a large crowd celebrated with Wyoming Gover-nor, the Honorable Matthew Mead and the head of the Wyoming Business Council Shawn Reese, both in atten-dance. The opening date is set for Fall 2015. “After full investigation into the Vertical Harvest business model, the combination of the employment model and the private/public partnership made it clear this was a viable business, but more importantly to me was the societal innovation in the employment model and the solutions that were found beyond traditional financing,” stated David Sokol, Equity Investor, CEO Teton Capital. “Jackson Hole is known for our beautiful National Park backdrop and long winters of snow and skiing so if we can do it here, the message is it can be done anywhere and that is the point,” Sokol added. **** Major Grants were received from: Wyoming Business Council, Wyoming Governor’s Council on Developmental Disability, First Interstate Bank, Teton Community Foundation of Jackson Hole and 1% for the Tetons.Corporate Sponsors: First Interstate Bank, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Grand Teton Lodge CompanySeed Funders: Over 300 local Jackson Hole residents*Employment First is a concept to facilitate the full inclusion of people with the most significant disabilities in the workplace and community. Under the Employment First approach, community-based, integrated employ-ment is the first option for employment services for youth and adults with significant disabilities. Integrated employment refers to jobs held by people with disabilities in typical workplace settings where they earn at least minimum wage, work with persons without disabilities and they are paid directly by the employer.
