This Sunday falls in the middle of the WeekWeekWeekWeekof Prayer for Christian Unityof Prayer for Christian Unityof Prayer for Christian Unityof Prayer for Christian Unity, a week whichleads up to the Feast of the Conversion ofSaint Paul on January 25th and which has
been kept as a special time of prayer since1908. The original inspiration came from amember of the Friars of the Atonement, areligious community which had originallybeen Episcopalian and was then received asa group into the Catholic Church. Unitywas a personal concern for them becausethey had grown up in the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States ofAmerica, part of the Anglican Communion, and they were now living within theworldwide Catholic Church. Their efforts to encourage unity were approved bythe Popes and now the theme for each Unity Week is proposed jointly by thePontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity (a department of the Vatican)
and the Commission on Faith and Order of the World Council of Churches(which represents the Orthodox Churches and the many Protestant groups).
This years theme is based on a verse from the Acts of the Apostles whichdescribes the first Christians in Jerusalem: One in the apostles teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread and prayer (cf. Acts 2:42). The point ofchoosing this verse is to remind us that these things go together. There is nomeaningful fellowship when people refuse to pray together. There can be nounity in the Eucharist (the breaking of bread) if there is no agreement aboutthe teaching which comes to us from the apostles. We Catholics are oftenforcefully reminded of this linkage when we have to announce at a wedding or afuneral that we cannot give communion to those who are not members of theCatholic Church (as explained in section 1400 of the Catechism). A few weeks
ago I spoke to an Episcopalian mother who wanted to send her children to ourschool next year but wanted to know if they would be welcomed in every way by which she meant welcomed to receive the Eucharist at school Masses. I hadto say no and explain that the Episcopalians define themselves as Protestants which means protesting against the teaching of the Catholic Church. Fortunatelythere has been much dialogue between the two groups in the last thirty years, but as long as the Anglican Communion and the Catholic Church disagree aboutteaching there cannot be the unity signified by common Eucharistic communion. Our practice is to allow non-Catholic children to come up in the communionline and receive a blessing, but that is as far as we can go: the apostlesteaching and the breaking of bread are inextricably linked and to allow onewithout the other is to perpetrate a lie.
Such sad situations, and the extraordinary number of break-away Protestantgroups in the United States, should encourage us not only to pray for the unityof Christians in this week but all year long. Also, if you get the chance, youmight want to join Bishop Noonan for this years Orlando area Prayer Servicefor Christian Unity, which will be held at St. George Orthodox Church, 24 N.Rosalind Avenue at 10.30 on January 25th.
