Dear NSA Parents & Guardians,
As we begin open enrollment and lottery enrollment for the 2019-2020 school year, many parents begin getting asked what makes North Star different and what is SEM. Parents often state they love their child's school, but are perplexed in how to best answer that question. Here is a little information to help. SEM stands for School -Wide Enrichment Model. We try to include snippets in every newsletter of what that looks like in action. It isn't a curriculum, but a philosophy of how to best teach. SEM encourages all students to develop their talents and interests through classroom opportunities, clubs, sports, and clusters. We supplement basic curriculum with Core Knowledge curriculum and enrichment specialists to offer experiences that are challenging, enjoyable, and of personal interest. The SEM provides enriched learning experiences and higher learning standards for all children through three goals:
- developing talents in all children,- providing a broad range of advanced-level enrichment
experiences for all students, and- providing advanced follow-up opportunities for young people
based on their strengths and interests
The last page of this newsletter includes "pass me out cards," you are welcome to distribute to neighbors, friends, teammates and you are welcome to invite them to our Board of Trustees Open House being held this Thursday at the school 6 - 7 p.m. to learn more.

SEM - Kindergarten Exercise and Relaxat ion
Kindergarten has been learning to take care of their bodies. We have learned about the importance of exercise and relaxation. Through active yoga sequences we have learned challenging poses, good posture and how to center themselves. It has been energizing and lots of fun with plenty of smiles. So great for our mind, body and soul!

We are holding our second Box Tops competition of the year. Our school-wide goal this time will be 5,000 box tops. If we reach our goal,
the entire school will get a free dress day on March 29th. Please turn in un-expired Box Tops to your home base or advisory teacher by March 15th.
Also, we have 21 families signed up for Smith's Inspiring Donations. Last quarter, we earned $121 from just 21 families! Imagine how much larger this donation could be if every North Star family that shops at Smith's signed up. Follow the steps to sign up with your rewards card and it will l ink NSA for future purchases. Here's how you do it:
To Use the Smith's Food & Drug Inspiring Donations Program:Simply encourage your participants to visit https:/ /www.smithsfoodanddrug.com/ . Once logged into their Smith's Food & Drug account they can search for North Star Academy either by name or QH601 and then click Enroll. New users will need to create an account which requires some basic information, a valid email address and a rewards card.

We encourage all NSA families to pass out the following cards to invite any friends, neighbors, or family who may be interested in attending NSA for the 2019-2020 school year. Lottery begins the 2nd week of February.
