A letter from the Pastor July 10, 2022

Jesus preached many parables, but one of his best-known parables is the one on the Good Samaritan. This title has even sipped into our culture when we want to highlight the good actions of a passerby who helps to save a life without any moral obligation to do so. But have we? Is there a moral obligation to assist a person who is hurting or is in danger? We live in a world in which more and more we detach ourselves from such obligation, but it is obvious that this has not made the world a better place to live. In the midst of so much violence and lack of respect to the people and the world in which we live, if we believe that things are not better than when we grew up, we need to ask ourselves, why? The answer is surely a complicated one, but a clear factor that must be dealt with, is that we have lost the sense of God and the divine, which calls us to faithful and responsible citizenship. Totalitarianism is a response to anarchy, and personal responsibility is the most important requirement to preserve a democracy. May we learn from the Good Samaritan. Thought for meditation: Do you take time to assist someone in need or do you keep going as if nothing is happening? Reflection for parents with children: Read to your children in an understandable way the parable of the Good Samaritan.

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT The Roman Catholic Parish of Blessed Francis

Xavier Seelos extends its arms to all who seek mercy, peace and love in the name of Jesus our Lord, and

shares the good news of life that lasts forever. We do so out of our conviction based on the teachings of the Catholic Church that God loves us all. We welcome

all who would live this way of life with us, wishing goodness and peace to spread abroad.

Jesus, You teach us in your parable that there are two kinds of people, those who bend down to help and those who look the other way. Which kind of people will we be? We say, “Yes, Lord, I will love you and love my neighbor.”

But then we ask the migrant, is he/she my neighbor?

Those in poverty...are they my neighbors? Victims of war across the world

... are they neighbors? One who faces racism… is he my neighbor?

Those disabled or elderly... are they my neighbors? You remind us thar...Yes. All of us are neighbors. Show us how to love, Lord. May we open our eyes and may we emerge from our comfortable isolation. May we build a world of compassion and dignity. Lord you who was neighbor to all, Help us to persevere in love. Help us to restore dignity to the suffering. Help us to build a society based not on exclusion, but on community. Amen.
