As of this spring semester,SaintXavierisnolongerofferingthe apartments at the ParksideVillage as anoff-campushousingoption. The Parkside apartments,more commonly known as theLawndale apar tments , werepreviouslycontractedasaformofstudenthousingbytheuniversity.However,thecontractwasrecentlyterminatedduetosafetyconcerns. A c c o rd i n g t o r e p o r t sbeginningasearlyasSeptemberoflastyear,thefirstfloorbusinessesatParksideVillagehadexperienced“recurringactsofvandalism”.AftercarefulconsiderationbyResidenceLife,StudentAffairs,andPresidentWiseman,thedecisionwasmadetorelocatethestudentsbeinghousedabovethesebusinesses. The SXU students residingin these apartments were firstnotifiedoftheuniversity’sdecisionin early January by JohnPelrine,VicePresidentforStudentAffairs.Studentswere first contacted byemail,andlater,byphone. “We are out of Parksidebecause of concerns of safety forstudents,”statedPelrine.

“Itwasnotaneasydecision,but it was a necessary one. Weknewwhatwehadtodo.” In an inter view, Pelrineexpla ined that 17 windowsbelonging to Parkside Villagebusinesseswere reported tohavebeenhitwithsomesortof“BB”orpelletgun.16ofthe17windowswereonthefirstfloor. The most recent of theseincidents was reported to haveoccurredonChristmas. In terms of a l ternat ivehousing,studentsweregivenalistof various campus housing unitsavailable,bothon-campusandoff-campus. Availabilities includedPulaski, Komensky, andRivieraapartments, Kedzie condos, anddorms inMcCarthy, O’Brien,Morris,andRubloff. Althoughhousingwasmadeavailable to the students beingrelocated,most of those optionsonlyofferedspaceforoneortwostudents,leavinggroupsofthreeormoretoconsidersplittingup. Studentswereaskedtoselectand rank three choices, listingroommate requests with theirresponse.

World BitsThe US branch of Atari, the makers of Pong, are currently looking to separate from their parent company, Atari SA, and file bankruptcy protection from. As Atari SA has been having financial downfalls, the US-based operations wish to maintain and increase their company’s current value, something they could not do under Atari SA. France has sent in over 2,000 troops into Mali to help aid in deflecting Islamic militants within the towns of Diabaly and Douentza. The Islamic militants fled on Friday. The Prime Minister Mohammed Morsi did not agree with France’s action and states, “We never accept military intervention in Mali, because this will exacerbate conflict in the region.” These sentiments were not the same as Diabaly’s mayor, who thanked the Fench and Malian troops. French Defense MinisterJean-Yves Le Drian stated “We will not leave any pockets”, and are actively regaining northern Mali. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-21121262)

Cyclone Oswald has been hitting the Lakefield area of Cape York this week in Australia. As of January 22, the rainfall has hit over 30 cm (1 ft) with winds up to 85km/hr (52.8mi/hr). Roads have been closed for the safety of the Australian citizens. VargasstatesthathisofficiallastdatewillbeJune30wherehewillbemovingtostarthisnewjob. “Thehardestpartisn’tleavingtheplace, it’s leaving thepeople.Youdeveloplotsoffriendshipsandrelationshipswithpeoplethatyouwouldn’thavemetotherwise.Therearesomegreatadministrators,staff,andstudentshere,”Vargasstates. Since startingworkhere onJuly1,2002,Vargashasoverseenmany changes in theRobert andMaryRitaMurphyStumpLibrarylocated in theWardeAcademiccenter. “I have come to love thetraditionof the Sisters ofMercy.Thatwillbewithmefortherestofmy life. It’s thepeople thatmaketheplace.Abuildingisbrickandmortar;it’sthepeopleinsidethatreallymakethedifference,” He continues with, “Andthat’swhat’shard,it’salwayshardto leave the folks youhave beenworkingwithforareallylongtime.It’swithreallymixedemotionsthatI’llbeleavingSXU,”statesVargas. Butto see the faces of peoplewhentheyfirstwalkedinandseethemlookingaroundandtohavepeopleoohandah;thatwasoneofthebestdaysyoucanaskfor.” However,Vargas says tonotonly thank him, stating that, “Igivemyselfverylittlecreditforwhatwe’vedone, it’swhatothershavedonethathelpedmakeithappen.It’shardtoseparateoutwhatyouthoughtordid.Changeishardforpeopleandthislibraryunderwentalotofchangeandthecreditgoestothestaffformakingthosechanges,adaptingtothem,andbuyingintothem.” Whenitcomestohispositionat Saint Xavier, Vargas and thelibrary staff work hard tomakesureresourcesandtechnologyareavailable to students when theyneedthem. Whenaskedwhathewillmissuponhisdeparture,heexplained,“It’salwaysthestudents.Italwayscomesbacktothestudents.Everyinstitutionhas students that youremember.ButImetthroughtheyears here somany great youngpeoplethatjustbrightenyourday.Yourealizethisiswhatit’sallabout.I see people using the recourses

StudentAffairs has createdanewdepartmentatSaintXavierUniversity. TheDepartment ofStudentMedia,consistingofTheXavierite newspaper andWXAV88.3F.M.,was launched in earlyJanuary. According toVicePresidentof StudentAffairs John Pelrine,the department was createdto distinguish the two studentmediaoutlets fromother studentorganizations. Previously, theoutlets had fallen under theauthority ofCampusLife,whichoverseesmostotherstudentgroupsandactivities. “The newspaper and radioarereallysmallbusinesses,”Pelrinesaid.“Iwantedthenewdepartmentto reflect the specialtyof studentmedia.” F u r t h e rmo r e , Pe l r i n ebelieves the department’s futurei s interconnected with theDepartment ofCommunication.He hopes to one day bridge thecurrentgapbetweentheacademicside of communication at SaintXavierandtheextracurricularside. “Hop e f u l l y t h e r a d i oand newspaper will be able tosupport the curriculum in the

communication department andvice versa,” Pelrine says. Onepotentialideaheoffersistoplacecommunicationstudentsintoradioand/or newspaper positions aspartof their course requirementsto supplement their learningandgivethempracticalexperience. When asked what specificplans or changes he has forstudentmediaoncampus,Kretenresponded,“You’lljusthavetowaitandsee.”

O n J a n u a r y 31 , t h eapplication step of SXU’s searchfor a replacement for precedingProvostDr.AngelaDurantewillfinallycometoanend. Thesearchforanewprovostbegan back in October whenDurante stepped down from theposition after five years at theposition. A committee, the ProvostSearch Committee, was thenestablished tohandle theprocessofreplacingDurante. This committee has beenconducting a targeted searchfor candidate for the position,sendingajobposttoseveralhighereducation magazines, websitesand conferences including “TheChronicle ofHigherEducation,”“InsideHigherEducation”andtheSXUwebsite. Aftertheapplicationdeadlineof Jan. 31, the search committee

will then review applications forqualifying factors. Among thesequalifications are the abilities toadvanceSXU’slong-termacademicdevelopment according toVision2017, to act as temporary fill-inas President in the case of anemergency,andtomirrorPresidentWiseman’sgoalsforleadership. The committee will theninterviewapprovedcandidatesoff-campusduring first phase of theselectionprocess. Candidates who make itpast the off-campus interviewswill participate in a variety ofassessments including two daysof on-campusmeetingswith thefaculty and staff, full interviews,andtwopresentationsopentothewholecampus. Questionsforeachcandidatewill then be developed basedon the presentations and sentto each candidate. The processwill continue until the searchcommittee decides on a newprovost.

When asked abouthow thenameof the awards came about,SisterJoyexplainedthatboththeSisterIsidorePerrigoawardandtheMotherPaulitaMorrisawardhavesomehistorytothem. “Sister Isidore was a Sisters ofMercy,whoworkedatSaintXaviera long time agowhen itwasnotonlyacollegebutalsoahighschoolandagrammarschool.Shewasinchargeofwhatwascalled‘thecandy

department,’’’SisterJoyexplains. AfterSisterIsidore’spassing,theSistersofMercywere lookingto purchase property aroundthis area to build a college. TheSisters ofMercy came about abroker (the brother of a mannamed Lindheimer who wasSister Isidore’s good friend),whorememberedhowSisterIsidorewaskindtohisyoungersister.DuetoherkindnessandgenerositySaintXavierUniversityfounditsway. WhenitcomestotheMotherPaulitaMorrisAward, Sister Joysays thatMother PaulitaMorris“wasontheboardforSaintXavierfor an incredibly long time. Shewas very interested in advancingpeoples understanding of theirfaith.Shesawthatimportanceofserviceasawayoflivingyourfaith.” Sister Joy later explains thatdue toMother Paulita’sMorris’s

interestinadvancingpeople’sfaithby away of service, students arereceievinganawardfittobeinhername. When aUniversitymembernominates anothermember, thenomineereceivesanotificationandhastheopportunitytoacceptthatnomination. “It does not take a lot tonominate,anditisaverygoodwayto thinkabouthowweare livingourmissiononMissionDayandhowcanwesaytopeoplewhoareoutstandingandlivingthemission,thankyoufordoingthat,foryourexample,andforencouragingtherestofus,”SisterJoystates. Thenominationprocessisjustopening and ready forUniversitymembers to begin recognizingthosewho show an outstandingservicetotheUniversityandtothecommunity.

Although students werecontacted on Friday, Jan. 4thabout re-housing options, theywereexpectedtohavemadetheirdecisionsby8:00a.m.onMonday,Jan.8thtoallowfortheirrelocationinatimelymatter. StudentswerealsoinformedthattheSXUFacilitiesStaffwouldbe available to assist with thetransferofbelongings,butalthoughtheywould try to accommodatethese students’ schedules, theirassistancewould bemost readilyavailableonJan.9and10.

To ease their transitionintonewhousing, the universitydid not require these studentsmoving into an on-campush o u s i n g a c c ommod a t i o nto increase their meal plans(previously “Bronze”) to the“Silver”mealplans,theminimumplanusuallyrequiredforstudentslivinginQuadHalls.Furthermore,students that needed residentparking were not charged forpermitsforthespringsemester. According to Pelrine, evenwithsuchshortnotice,theprocesshas gone smoothly, and that theuniversitystandsbytheirdecision. “We are confident it is thecorrectdecisionstotakereasonableandpossiblestepstomaintainthesafetyofourstudents,”hesaid.

VIEWPOINTSTipping Point in Global Warming

We are experiencingmoreandmoresigns that theplanet iswarming. Ofcourse,onecannotpointtoanyoneeventandblameitonglobalwarming.Nevertheless,therehavebeennumerouseventsthat point to global warmingincluding the dramatic droughtsandheatwaves in theU.S. overthelastfewyears.HurricaneSandyis just the latest of such extremeweatherevents. Wedon’thaveanymoretimeto deny the existence of globalwarming. Instead let us try tosolveitbeforeitgetsoutofhand.Europe has been tackling thisproblem for some timenow,andtheUnitedStateshas juststartedto combat it within the last fewyears aswell. I would normallycommend our ability to strivefor less pollution slowlywithoutdampening economic growth. Itwasn’tuntilthepastfewyearsthatIstartedreadingmore,andalsojustlookingaroundme,thatIrealizedthatwecannotaffordtotacklethisproblemslowandsteadyanymore. Ifwedonotact soon, theremight not be a future to lookforward to! But why, you ask?Whydid I change fromeveryonedoingtheirfairsharebutnoneedtopanic,towemusthaveagreensurge now attitude? It has beendiscoveredthatthereareabout1.7trillion tons of carbon frozen inpermafrostaroundtheworld.Thispermafrosthasjuststartedtomelt,meaningthatwearegoingtohavemorepollutionintheatmosphere.Also,someofthecarbonreleasedfromthepermafrostwillbereleasedasMethane,whichis25timesmoreeffectiveattrappingheatascarbon.Thisisjustmorebadnewsforthefutureofourplanet.

T h e Un i t e d N a t i o n sEnvironment Program estimatedthatworldtemperaturesaregoingtorisebetween3°C–5°C(5.4°F–9°F)by theendof thecentury.That estimate does not includethemeltingpermafrost. Sothesenumbers are likely to be wrongandunfortunatelytheincreaseintemperaturemight evenbemoredirethenwhattheseresultssay.Letusforgetaboutthepermafrostforamomentandthinkaboutthatforaminute.Thismeansthatbythetimewe aremiddle-aged, averagetemperaturesaroundtheworldwillbearound2°Fand4°Fhotterthanpre-industrialized times. The lastcoupleofsummershavebeenprettyhot,butimaginehowitwillbeinthe future. Farmershave alreadybeen strugglingwith thewarmertemperatures, but we are just atthebeginning. Temperatures arecurrently 0.8°Chigher than pre-industrializedtimes. Thesimplefactofthematteristhattheworldisgettingwarmer,anditisgettingwarmerfast.Thewhole warming problem canbecomeadominoeffect.Themorepollutionintheairtrapsmoreheat.Ahotterworldcausesicetomelt.Icecanreflectsomesunlightandmake theworld cooler. So lessicewillmeanmorewater,whichabsorbsmoreheat.Eventually,itgetshotenoughtomeltpermafrost.This then will release a lot ofcarbondioxideandmethaneandmaketheworldevenwarmer. Now the in te rna t iona lcommunity,includingtheUnitedStates, all agree that we shoulddo everything in our power tonot allowworld temperatures toincreasemore than 2°C. TherecentrelocationofSaintXavierstudentsfromtheParksideVillagehousingcomplextovariousresidencesacrosscampushas,toadegree,pittedsomestudentsagainstthe administration—a perennialoccurrenceatanyuniversity.Bothsideshavevalidreasonsforfeelingtheway they do, and onlywhentheyunderstandeachothercanwemoveforward. TheXavieritebelievesthattheuniversitydisplayedanadmirablecommitmenttostudentsafetyandwelfare during this situation.Atthe same time, opponents of thedecision to relocatehave a pointwhen they argue the actionwasratherextremeandabrupt. The spark that caused theuniversity to end relationshipswith Parkside Village centeredon an unknown individualwitha BB gun who had been firinginto the building’s windows.Pellets were fired on five or sixoccasions, involving 17windows,mostrecentlyonChristmas. In fact, a couplestudentshavedonejustthat. Now, we know throughunofficial channels that one ofthe likely reasons some formerstudent residents of ParksideVillageareupsetwiththeclosureis that those apartments wereknown for their parties. Suchparties are petty reasons to riskstudents’ safety, however, andanybodyfairlyexaminingthisissuewill understand that.Thepartiescan always be relocatedwith thestudents. In the end, this relocationis oneof those issues towhich amutual understandingmightnotbe reached. According to VicePresident JohnPelrine, however,the process has gone relativelysmoothly. Last August, a 57 year oldmaninJacksonville,Floridawentgrocery shopping for his wifeat a dollar store. This simpletask quickly turned into a lifethreateningsituationastwoarmedrobbersarrived,theirgunspointedatthestoreclerk.Beforethesethugscouldharmanybody,however,oneofthemwasshotbytheshopper,who was carrying a concealedweapon.The secondquickly fledthestore.Innocentlivesweresavedbecauseofthatshopper’srighttobeararms. Inthewakeofthehorrendousschool shooting inConnecticut,inwhich somany childrendied,the debate over gun control haspassionatelyresurfaced.Giventheopportunity,manywouldquicklyrestrict gun ownership or eveneliminatetheSecondAmendmentand askquestions later.This is amistake. Forone,thosewhoareseekingsuch immediate restrictions areacting on pure emotion, drawnfrom the Connecticut tragedy,andnot taking the time to thinkthrough the issue logically. It isthesameassomeonecommittinga reckless act in the heat of themomentonlytoregretitlater. The truth is that a blanketbanongunsisnotonlycompletelyimpractical in theUnited States,butalsopotentiallydangerous.

Now,afavoritetalkingpointbyguncontroladvocatesisthefactthattheUnitedKingdom,withitstightgunrestrictions,hasfarfewergundeaths then theU.S.,whichhastheworld’s largestnumberofprivatelyheldguns.TheargumenthereisthatbecauseguncontrolhasreducedgundeathsintheU.K.andotherEuropeancountries,itwoulddosointheU.S. Let us take a closer look atguncontrol in theU.K. In1996,16 young children and a teacherwere murdered by a gunmanwho entered a primary schoolgymnasiuminDunblane,Scotland. Th i s ma s s a c re i n c i t eda passionate discourse on guncontrol, which culminated inthe FirearmsAmendmentAct of1997 banning private ownershipof handguns.At that time therewereanestimated200,000legally-registered handguns in theU.K.Authorities began confiscatingthem. In thedecade after theban,gunhomicides actually increasedon the average, peaking in 2004.Onlyinthepastsixyearshasthenumber consistently begun todecrease.Evennow,however,thereareanestimated4,060,000firearms(ofalltypes)privatelyownedintheU.K. Now let us suppose such astrict law is passed in theU.S. Iwill stickwithhandguns to keepthe point simple. There are anestimated 40-45million adultswho own handguns in theU.S.Compare that with the 200,000in theU.K. when the ban was

passed. Keep inmind also thattheU.S. has a total land area of2,959,064squaremiles,comparedtotheU.K.’s94,060squaremiles.Inshort,therearewaymoregunshereandmoreplacestohidethem. So we can ban guns, butsuchanedictwouldbeascheapastheinkusedtowriteitup.Thereis noway the authorities wouldever come close to confiscatingall of those weapons. Earlier Iwasspeakingstrictlyofhandguns,butforthoseofyouwhowanttoban all guns, youwould have toconfiscate…waitforit…270millionfirearms! Butforthesakeofargument,letussupposethatauthoritiesdosomehowmanagetoclearupevenhalf of those guns. Just becausesomethingisillegaldoesnotmeanpeoplewillnotacquireit. CocaineisillegalintheU.S.,yet the drug trade is flourishing.Child prostitution is also illegal,yetthereareanestimated100,000child prostitutes being abusedin the U.S. today. In Illinois,somethingassillyasfireworksareillegal,yetgooutsideonJuly4andseehowmany of yourneighborsignorethatlaw. Sobanninggunsiscompletelyimpractical. “But why not tryanyway?” you ask. Simple. Itwouldredistributethegunowningpopulation. The law abidingcitizenswouldturntheirgunsintotheauthoritiesandsitdefenselessas thugs and criminals go abouttheir business as normal.GoingbacktothestoryIbeganwith,thetworobberswouldstillhavetheir

guns,buttheshopperwhostoppedthemwouldnothavehis.Sure,thetotalnumberofgundeathsmightdecrease—for criminals. Innocentpeople would continue gettingkilled. EventheU.K.isnotimmunefrom this fact. In 2010, a lonegunmankilled12peopleinamassshooting inCumbria, northernEngland—ithappeneddespiteallofthestrictgunlaws.Infact,violentcrimeintheU.K.,whichincludesall violent acts against people, ishigherthanintheUnitedStates.So thinkingwe canpreventmassshootings and other forms ofviolence by a gun ban iswishfulthinking. Indeed, criminals could restassured that they would not beshotbyaprivatecitizenprotectinghislifeorproperty.TheschoolinConnecticutwasa“gunfreezone.”Thatpointlessphrasedidnothingtodeterthegunman.Itmayhaveactuallyreassuredhim. Here in Chicago we havesomeof the strictest gun laws inthecountry.YetChicago’smurderrateisfourtimesthatofNewYorkanddouble that of LosAngeles.Whatmore,duringthespanofthewar inAfghanistan,morepeoplehave died from gun violence inChicagothenhavesoldiersonthebattlefield! Banning guns is not theanswer to eliminating crime.Shouldgunownerspassathoroughbackground check? Of course.Should they prove that they cansafelyhandleaweapon?Naturally.Iwillevengosofarastosaythat

you can ban certain so-called“assaultweapons,”butonlyifyoucanactuallydefinewhatthoseare.Afterall,fulloutmachinegunsarealreadybasicallyillegal. I canunderstandwhymanybelieve thatgunsmake theworldascaryplace,andIhavenodoubtthatmostpeoplewhowanttoseethembannedhavegoodintentions.Nevertheless, I contend that itwould bemuch scarier to knowthatsociety’svillainsremainheavilyarmed,whileyouhaveonlyafryingpantoprotectyourself.

We aremoving away froma frank analysis of gun use andmoving towards a discussion ofabsolutely anything besides gunsthemselves. The way we speak aboutgunshasevenchangedinthepastthree decades. Since 2008, theterm “SecondAmendment” hasbeenusedmorefrequentlyinthenewsmediathanthephrase“guncontrol.”(NewsLibrary.com) Gun rights activists havea much easier time securingsympathy for theirpositionwhentheycanframethedebateintermsof Constitutional rights, ratherthantheeffectsofgunviolence. is thatweneed tokeep gunsoutofreachfrompeoplewithmentalillness.Infact,peoplewithmentalillnesscommitonly4%ofviolencewithintheU.S.(AmericanJournalofPsychiatry) Mental illness is not thetrue culprit here,much less thepeople who live with it daily.AccordingtotheNationalInstituteofMentalHealth’sEpidemiologicCatchmentAreastudy,whichused18,000subjects,evenpeoplewithseveremental illnesses were notparticularlypronetoviolence. People withmental illnessareabouttwiceaslikelytocommitviolenceintheirlifetimesthanthegeneral population. In contrast,the study found that thosewithsubstance abuse problems wereseven times as likely to commitviolence compared to the generalpublic. E ven s o , p ro fe s s i ona lpsychiatristsadmitthatitisvirtuallyimpossibletopredictwhichpeoplewill be violent, based on theirmentalhealthprofilealone.JeffreySwanson is an expert in violenceepidemiology and a psychiatryprofessor at Duke University.He explains, “Psychiatrists, usingclinical judgment, are notmuchbetter than chance at predictingwhichindividualspatientswilldosomethingviolentandwhichwillnot.”(NYTimes)

It can be very tempting topinpointournation’s issueswithviolence and use people withmental illness as a scapegoat.Analreadystigmatizedgroupmakesanexcellentvillain in the schemeofgunviolence.Anditisveryeasytotargetvillainsinclearcuttragedieslikemassshootings. But the reality is thatmassshootings do notmake up themajority of gun deaths. Theseshootings are isolated, if bloodyincidents that seem to occurrandomly.Theseshootingsreceiveextensivemedia coverage, whencomparedtoaveragegunhomicidesandsuicides. This imbalance in coveragecan lead us to forget the dailyhorrorofgunviolenceinourowncities. In 2012,Chicago saw500homicides,87%ofwhichinvolvedguns. Three hundred nineteenstudents were shot in Chicagopublic schools throughout thepastschoolyear,with24resultingdeaths.(ChicagoSun-Times) Easily-accessible informationfrom theUnited StatesCensusBureau shows that young blackmen in America die from gunviolenceateighttimestherateofyoungwhitemen. BlackChicagoansmake up33% of the city’s population,but 70% of itsmurder victims.Philadelphia shares a similar

But if it is so commonplacethattheirnamesarenotmentionedinthenews,thenitisabigenoughnational problem to deserveimmediateattention.Ifwedevotedmoretimetorightingthewrongsof gun violence and less time todefendingour“right”topotentiallycommit violence, we could beclosertosolvingtheproblem. Inanofficialstatementfromthe National Rif le Association(NRA),Wayne LaPierre,NRA’sexecutive vice president stated,“Theonly thing that stops abadguywithagunisagoodguywithagun.” There are no “good guyswith guns” and “bad guys withguns,”becausethereareno“goodguys” or “bad guys.” There areonlypeoplewithguns.Lifeisnotan oldWestern or a superheromovie. People aremore ethicallycomplexandatthesametimemoreanimalisticallycompulsivethanwegiveourselvescreditfor.

Plans for American Death Star? I’ve Got a Bad Feeling About This...

I swear toGod,Americansget dumber every year. I wouldhave loved to write about filmor something pertinent aboutAmerican politics for my firstcolumn of the year, but as theCrusader of Sanity my powersof “Duh!” are needed elsewhere,though not totally unrelated tothe previousmentioned areas ofconversation. Ithas come tomyattentionthat recently theWhiteHousereceivedapetitionfortheUnitedStatestoconstructareal,workingversionoftheDeathStarfromthe“StarWars”movies. Forthoseofyounotfamiliarwiththefilmfranchise,theDeathStarisaspacestationthatisthesizeofasmallplanetwitharaygunsopowerfulthatitcandestroyplanets.Oh yeah, it’s also theweaponofchoiceofthefilmseriesantagonist–acorruptedgalacticfascist. Ialmostdon’tknowwheretobeginwiththis.AccordingtoNPR,this petitionwas signed by over34,435people.PrimaryamongthereasonscitedforthispetitionbeingsignedwastoputAmericansbacktowork. Ipresumeonlytwokindsofpeoplewouldsignsuchapetition. The first groupmost likelyconsists of people doing this assomesortofsarcastic jokejusttosee if their “clever” littlepetition

cangetenoughsignaturestomakeittothedeskofPresidentObama;theproblemistheyarenotclever. They are onlywasting theirtimeandthetimeofpeoplewhohavetosortthroughthesepetitionsanddecidewhether ornot thesepetitionsareimportantenoughtomakeittoPresidentObama’sdesk. Thinkofimportantpetitionsof concerned Americans thatwerehaltedbecauseofthisstupidjoke.The other group of peoplewho signed this thing, amuchsmaller demographic I hope, arepeoplewho actually believe thatthe United States of Americashould,outofnecessity,constructaspacestationwiththecapabilityofdestroyingplanetsinordertoputAmericansbacktowork. The problem with thislies in three areas. First, it’s notpossible. Even in the fictionalworld thatGeorgeLucas created,onecharacterremarksthatit’snotpossible for a space station to besobig; inauniversethat featurestelekineticpowersandbizarrealiencreatures, theDeathStar is a far-fetchedconcept. Second,theUnitedStates istrying to cut back on its defensebudget;whyinthehellwouldthegovernmentwant to concentratemoremoney into constructingaweapon that couldn’t possiblyexist? Third, it’s the antagonist’smainweapon;theyareidentifyingourcountrywiththeworstfascistorganization in filmhistory (notcounting theNazis in countlessWorldWarIIfilms). It’s admirable people are

concerned that otherAmericansneedwork,butwouldn’titbeniceiftheyfocusedtheireffortsintoapetitionthatwasn’tawasteoftime? This sounds ridiculous, butthisisn’tthefirsttime“StarWars”hascomeintoquestioninregards

togovernmentpolicy.Backduringthe final days of theColdWar,PresidentRonaldReaganproposeda“StarWars”-esquedefensesystemthatcouldbeusedtostrikedownnuclearweaponsfromspace;peoplelaughedatitandcalleditajoke. Thisisanevenworseidea.AtleastPresidentReaganwaspushedtoapointofcrazydesperationbytheRussiansandalongenduringColdWar. This is likely nomore thanpeoplegoofingofforcrazypeoplewho actually think that aDeathStar is a good idea.Evenputtingmonetarylogicasideandassumingforamomentthatthegovernmentactuallydecidedtogoaheadwiththis plan to construct amassive

our galaxy, let alone planets thatwanttodobattlewithplanetEarthor theUnited States thatwouldnecessitate theneed for aDeathStar. TheWhiteHousehasrecentlyupped the number of signaturesneededonapetitionfrom25,000to100,000. I just hope that this prankdoesn’t inspire countless filmfans (or delusional nutcases) topress the government toproduceartifactsthatcanonlyexistwithintherealmofHollywood.Iamsurethereissomeloserinhisbasementas we speak drafting a petitionfor the government to startmassproducing real-life versions ofDocBrown’sFluxCapacitorfrom“Back to theFuture” or an armyofkiller,timetravelingrobotsthatarestraightfromthemindofJamesCameron. Maybe there’s even somedelusional personwriting for thegovernmenttounleashthepowerof theArk of theCovenant thathasbeenstoredawaysinceIndianaJones recovered it fromtheNazisbackin1936. There is a scene in KevinSmith’sfilm“Clerks”inwhichthetwomain characters,Dante andRandal (both college dropouts),carryonaconversationonwhethertheDeath Star was constructedbyarmylevelengineersorsimple,innocentcontractorsjusttryingtomakealiving. Itisascenethatissoridiculous(andthereforefunny)thatitcouldonlyexistwithinthemovies,orsoIthought.

I just want to congratulatethehuman race onmanaging tosurvivegoingaroundthesunonemore time, despitewhat certainother calendars predicted or thehundreds of thousands of otherinterestingwayswecouldendourshortexistence. Wetakethistimeeveryyeartorememberthegoodthingsinlifeandmakenew aspirations, and Iamheretotellyouthereflectionsand forecast of my writings tocome. My readersdeserve toknowthemotivesforwhatIputinfrontof themeveryweek, and there isno better explanation than fromthebeginning. My family histor y is aninterestingtalenotmeantforthepaperjustyet,butIwillsaythatIwas exposed tomultiple culturesandpointsofview. I was also bullied in mychildhoodforbeingagamerandalittlefat,soIspentalotoftimebymyself.

Anger always seemed to beboiling beneath the surface, butthatmeditative time allowedmetopushthatfire intothecornersofmymindandtoseethingsforwhattheywere. I took every problem as asociological issue because peopleaffectedtheactionsofothers. AsIgrewupandmovedintohighschool,Iwantedtohelpotherkids who suffered alienation orvariouspeerpressureissues. Over three years as a peermentor, Ihelpeddozensofotherstudentsfromhomeworktosuicide. ItisfromthisexperiencethatIcouldbegintograspthepositiveeffectonepersoncanhave,iftheyshowalittlehumancompassion. I , l ike numerous fel lowincoming college students, lostmy social bearings uponwalkingthrough theuniversity’s door forthefirsttime;soIturnedtoclubsforsomedegreeofsocialstability. When I s t ar ted a t theXavierite, I hadno ideawhat toexpectorreallyevenhowtowriteaweeklyopinioncolumn. Icouldtalkaboutmoviesandgamesuntilthesungoesdown,butI felt having the opportunity toaddressthousandsofpeopleinanarticulatemediumeveryweekboreaseriousresponsibility.

With the displacement ofmyclosesocialcircle, I turnedtothenationalscaletofindmeaningbecausemakingnewfriendsisnotmygreatestattribute. My eyeswereopened to thepainoftheworldandonly justafractionofit. Iwassoveryangry,lost,anddid Imention angry, but then Irealizedsomething. Thepassionthatwasflowingthroughmecouldbechanneledinasimilarconstructivemannerasmyhighschoolyears. Ihadtodosomethingtohelp,andthatisbyspreadingthewordaboutwhatishappening. Itwasaveryfortunatestrokeof genius andhunger that drovemeandagoodfriendtostumbleuponWagner’sSeafood.WefoundthenamelistedonaGPSandthendecided thatwewereboth in themoodforseafood. ThefirstthingInoticedwasthebright,neon“jumboshrimp”sign and thehandwritten “hoursofoperation”signonthedoor.

Sam’s Snack Time: Wagner’s Seafood A s we wa lked in , theintoxicating smell of seafoodand fish filledmy head. It wasnot overwhelming, but it wasprominent. Behind the glass of a delicounterisawidevarietyofseafoodand shellfish, such as salmon,scallops,andshrimp. Keep inmind that there isneitheratablenorchairs,soeatingin your car or heading back tocampusisrequired. Thereisahandwrittenmenuon thewall behind the counter,showcasing appetizers and friedfishsandwiches.Iindulgedinthewalleyesandwichwithfriesandadrink,which cost approximately$7.50. Thiswasaslightchangefrommy usual catfish sandwich, andI was pleasantly surprised. Thewalleyeispreparedthesamewayas

everyothersandwich;itisbattered,deep-fried, and placed on a bunwithAmerican cheese and tartarsauce. Myfriendswhoaccompaniedmehad the catfish sandwich (myusualfavorite),theclamchowder,and I even shared a little ofmyMarylandcrabcakewiththem. I have been here before, soI knew exactly what to expect;deliciousfoodandveryreasonableprices.(Thecatfishsandwichwithnofriesordrinkisaround$4.00.,and theMaryland crab cake isaround$2.50). Myfriendswereverypleasantlysurprised and very satisfiedwiththeirexperienceatWagner’s. The clam chowder is onlyserved onFridays, but it ismostexcellent.Itiscreamyandnottoosalty with chunks of clams andpotatoes.

Aside fromthe sandwiches,Wagne r ’ s a l s oser ves chicken,bakedsalmonandorangeroughywithrice.There is alsoa plethora of sidedishes to choosefrom, includingp o t a t o s a l a d ,coleslawandmanymoreoptions. The staff isvery friendly andvery welcoming.T h e t h r e ewho are usually there are veryaccommodatingandwilltreatyouliketheirneighbor. Welcome back to school!Now, I am going to have to goaheadandaskyouwhatyoudidforbreak,sincethatiswhateveryonedoes. However, since this is thenewspaperandIcannothearyourresponse, I am just going to skipaheadtothepartwhereItellyouaboutthereallyawesomeconcert(s)Iwentto. Thankstosomeveryawesomepeople, includingmy boss, PeterKreten,andmyboyfriend,Bryan,IwasabletoexperienceOfMonstersandMen(OMAM)live,notoncebuttwice! On Sunday,December 16.thanks to Peter and his friendfromJBTV,Kyle,IwasabletogetintothetapingoftheJBTVshowwithOMAMatthelastminute.Inreturn,Iofcoursehadtosellmysoultohim,butitwasveryworthit. When I first arrived to theJBTVstudio,Iwasescortedupstairstothelobby.Icouldgoonandonaboutalltheamazingthingstheyhave in the lobby, however sincethisisanarticleaboutOMAM,Iwillnotgushaboutthelobbytoomuch. However, Iwill tell you, thewalls, the ceiling, everything iscovered in albums, posters, andeven a straight-jacket that are allsignedbybands.Iwouldreallylovetohaveadaytojustwalkaroundin

However,itwasnice,becauseit gave the showa really intimatefeeling.Unfortunatelyforeveryoneelse,noteveryonewasabletogetinto the actual room towatch itlive,howeverIwasthereandonlyamerethreefeetfromthestage. A f t e r s e v e r a l mon th sof meetings, discussions, highemotions, and talks between thePlayers Union and the NHL,both parties have decided on anew10-yearCollectiveBargainingAgreement (CBA), inwhich theOwners and Players will shareHockeyRelatedRevenues (HHR)50%-50%.Sincetheestablishmentof thenewCBAhascut intotheRegular Season, the 2012-2013NHL seasonwill now consist of720-regulargames,whichgiveseachteam48regularseasongames.Thisalsocutsthenormalregularseasoncount(82games)rightinhalf. AlthoughhavingNHLhockeybackisnothingshortofablessing,thereisnowahugesenseofurgencyamong the teams. The race forpoints this season is going to befarmorestressfulgiventhatthereare only half asmany games toearn the needed points tomaketheStanleyCupPlayoffs.Forthosewhoarenotfamiliarwiththepointsystem,inordertoearnpointsintheNHLateammustwingames.More specifically, each game thatiswonisworth2pointsandeveryOvertimeorShootoutlossisworth1point.Thetop8teamsineachconference(EasternConference&WesternConference)withthemostpointswill enter into theStanley

ThiscreatestheargumentofwhichteamswillmaketheStanleyCupPlayoffsthisyear.Manyfanshave disputed that some teams,whohavestruggledinpastseasons,may now have a legit chance tomake an impact this shortenedseason. For example, the TorontoMaple Leafs,MinnesotaWild,ColumbusBlue Jackets, and theEdmontonOilers have struggledforquitesometimetogenerateaPlayoffberthoracrediblePlayoffstreak at that. Now with fewergamestoplay,althoughitmaybeadoubled-edgedsword,thereisapossibilityof taking anearly leadoverthepowerhouseteamsoftheNHL. LastseasontheOilers,MapleLeafs,andtheMinnesotaWildhadagreatstarttotheseasonandwereamongthetopteamsintheNHLatthatpoint.Thisseason,iftheseteamsrepeatasolidwinningstreak,theycanverywellbea legitimatethreatintheNHL. IfColumbuscandothesamethingmaybe they can turn theirnotoriouslosingrecordaroundandshowtheNHLthattheycanstillbeconsideredathreat.

Blackhawks Update

The Chicago Blackhawksstartedtheir2012-2013seasononthe right foot Saturday January19th. Their opening opponentwas the previous Stanley CupChampions, the Los Angeles

Kings. TheHawks opened up the1st Periodwith a total of 3 goalsscored in order by PatrickKane,MarianHossa,andMichaelFrolik.TheBlackhawkscaptainJonathanToewsalsostartedhisseasonwithagoalandanassist.MarianHossatotaled2goalsandanassistmakinghisperformancea3-pointnight.The game finalwas a 5-2Hawksvictory. I was quite impressedwithCoachJoelQuenneville’schoiceinhislineupsforopeningnight.Thefirstlineconsistedof(listedfrom:LeftWing-Center-RightWing)Hossa,Toews, andCarcillo.ThislineconsistedofpurescoringtalentbetweenHossa and Toews, butalso complimented byCarcillo’sphysicalplayandalsohisoffensivecapabilities. Although the firstvictoryoftheyearyieldedalotofpositives,there are also a few things theHawks need to work on andmanage. First, it was so awesome tohaveCarcillo back on the ice inaBlackhawks uniform.However,late inthegameafterahardhip-checkdeliveredbyaKingsplayer,Danielwenttothedressingroomafterappearingtobeinsomepain.This is not goodnews since thiswasDanielCarcillo’s returnaftera season ending knee injury lastseason.TheBlackhawks’medicalstaffneeds togetDannybackontheiceassoonaspossible.Withouthim,theHawksaregoingtomisshisphysicalityandhisexperience. Now theHawkswill call on

20-year-oldBrandon Saad to fillCarcillo’sposition.AlthoughSaadisamostimpressiveyoungforward,hewilllackexperienceofaveteranforwardsuchasCarcillo. The Blackhawksmust alsowork on not taking unnecessarypenaltieswhiletheyhaveabigleadtosecurethevictory. Finally, theHawks shouldmakeabetterefforttostayfocusedwhilehavingabigleadinagamethis season, insteadof letting theopposing team slowly comebacklikeintheLosAngelesgame.

Followinga11-2season,threeSaint XavierUniversity footballplayerswereawardedwithnationalawards. Shane Zackery, JimmyCoy,andMattMunizzi,allseniorsofthe2012footballteam,werehonoredwith prestigous awards followingtheirlastseasonofCougarFootball. Zackery,formerwidereceiver,was honored by the NationalFootball Foundation (NFF) as aNational Scholar-Athlete Finalistforhisexcellenceinbothathleticsandacademics. He is the only player fromtheNAIAdivision in2012 tobenamed to thisdistinction. He isalso the first-evermember of theSaintXavier football team to benamedtothislist. OnDecember 4th, Zackerytraveled to New York City toattendanawardsdinnerhonoringthe finalists. He was awardeda scholarship of $18,000 to usetowardgraduateschool. Coy, former quarterback,was named2012Rawlings-NAIANational Football Player of theYear.Thehonorwas announcedat an awards banquet inRome,

Georgia. Coy is the secondplayer ofSaintXavierAthleticstobenamedto this honor andonly the 13thplayertobehonoredintheaward’shistory. HeisalsothethirdplayerintheMid-StatesFootballAssociation(MSFA)toreceivethisaward. Munizzi, former center,wasnamedthe2012NAIARimingtonAwardrecipient. The award, announced bytheRimingtontrophycommittee,recognizes exceptional centerswithinboththeNCAA’sFootballChampionshipSubdivision(FCS)andDivisionsIIandIII,andtheNAIAdivision. Munizzi is the first SXUfootballplayer,aswellasonlythesecondplayerwithintheMSFAtoreceivethisaward. All three players attributedtheir accomplishments to theirfamilies, teammates, andCoachFeminis. TheplayerswerehonoredattheSaintXavier footballbanquetamongsttheirfellowteammembersandfamiliesfortheircontributionsto the team throughout theirCougarfootballcareers.

TheSXUwomen’sbasketballteamhasbeenonanabsoluterollthroughoutthepastmonth.Theyhave turned their season aroundandhavemadesuretheysolidifiedtheir spot in the ChicagolandCollegiate Athletic Conference(CCAC). Back onDecember 16 thewomen were defeated by theUniversity of St Francis, 74-68,inagamethatturnedtheirwholeseasonaround.TheCougarshada leadinthefirsthalf,but itwasturnoversthatledtotheirdemiseinthesecondhalf.Theyendeduplosing by six points and itwas acrucialturningpointintheseasonasitwasalsotheirthirdCCAClossoftheseason. The next team thatwas ontap for the SaintXavierCougarswasMorningsideUniversity.TheCougars traveled to Florida onDecember17,wheretheyweresettotakeontheNo.3teaminthenation,Morningside. The game seemed to be intheCougarsfavorthroughouttheentire contest.At one point theCougars were up by 16 points.Suzie Broski had a big game forSaintXavierasshescored16points

and brought down13 rebounds.AnotherCougarwhohad anicegamewasMorgan Stuut,whohad24pointsandeightrebounds.SaintXavierwentontowinby11points,76-65. ThiswouldbethestartofanimpressiverunbytheSaintXavierwomen’sbasketballteam.ThegirlswentontowintheCruzinclassictournament inFlorida; and thenwenthome tohost theirHolidayTournament at the ShannonCenter. The first team theCougarsplayedintheHolidayTournamentwasAshfordUniversity and theCougarseasilytookcareofbusinessagainstthemwinning,82-49.ThenextdaytheCougarshadtogoupagainst theNo. 23 ranked team,HuntingtonUniversity. The Saint Xavier CougarscontinuedtheirwinningwaysandmovedontoplayOlivetNazareneUniversityintheirnextbiggame. The Cougars dominatedagainstOlivetandhadsomegirlsstep up in a big way.Margaret Wildner hadagreatgameas shescored 11 points, collected sixrebounds, and racked up threesteals. The Cougars ended upwinning the game, 86-69. SaintXavier held Olivet to only 69points,which is 35points belowtheiraveragepointtotal.Thatwassomething to be very impressedwithandthatwassomethingthathelpedtocontinuetofueltheSaintXavierwinningstreak. TheCougarsmoved on toRoosevelt University who theyknocked offwith a score of, 81-61.However, theydidhave sometroubleinthatgameastheyweredown at halftime 36-31. Theyroaredbackinthesecondhalfanddominatedtherestofthegame. Against Trinity Christian,

Saint Xavier got off to anotherslowstart,butitwasthehothandofMaureen Riley that theyusedto lift them over the Trolls. Athalftimeshewas5-5frombeyondthearc.Thatwasthefirsttimethathappenedsince Angie Brownbackin2006.Rileyendedwith24pointsonthenightandeightthreepointmakes. ThelatestgametheCougarsplayedwasthispastSaturdaywhenthey traveled up toWisconsinto take on theCardinal StritchWolves.Thefirsthalfwasagooddefensivebattlethatwhenbackand
