In the early Church, what we know as Christmas was not celebrated. Easter was, and still is, the pivotal celebration of the Liturgical Year. Before, the traditional date of December 25th was designated by the Pope as the Nativity of the Lord, the Eastern Church had the custom of celebrating the Arrival of the Magi and popularized the tradition of Christ’s Incarnation. The Western Church meshed this beautiful tradition into what we now celebrate as the Christmas Season. Many cultures, to this day, regard the Epiphany as “Little Christmas” by exchanging gifts on January 6th. Matthew’s Gospel states that three gifts were given to Jesus by the Magi…Gold, symbolizing Christ’s Kingly status; Frankincense, symbolic of his Priestly dignity; and Myrrh, foretelling his suffering and death. Talking about gifts, I want to take this opportunity to extend my appreciation to you, as parish, who are a gift to St. John the Beloved Parish. During the holidays, you met the challenges of our Outreach Programs with contributions, food, supplies, gifts, energy. For example, over 1,500 gifts were given to the needed through your generosity this Christmas. Thank You. To those who volunteered in this tedious and often stressful capacity…may you be richly rewarded.

The chair people, volunteers and workers of our Christmas Bazaar, again, did a phenomenal job. For example, homemade pasta is a laborious chore and many of us benefited from our parishioner’s labor of love. Again, Thank You. These past holy days required much more dedication and effort on the part of various ministries. Planning, scheduling and serving required dedication and we had it. Our environmental volunteers did a fantastic job again. Whatever you contributed in time, talent and treasure publicly or quietly…Thank You. Our youth, in all programs, truly extended themselves in singing, transporting, serving, cleaning, etc. They make us very proud of them. God sees everything and knows the goodness you radiate. God reward you in His limitless benevolence. From all of us to all of you…Thank You for being the gift you are to us. Talking about gifts, our parish is fortunate to have assigned to us, by Bishop Malooly, a third Permanent Deacon. Deacon Mark Fontana began his ministry with us on January 1st. A native Wilmingtonian and our parishioner, Deacon Mark will serve on our Finance Committee and minister to us at Liturgy and parish programs. Welcome Deacon Fontana and God Bless you. -Fr. Joe

LITURGICAL INSIGHTS

Epiphany and the Three Kings

While all Christians throughout the world celebrate December 25 as the Nativity of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, many countries and cultures observe Christmas Day primarily as a religious celebration, reserving the traditional gift-giving for what they call “Little Christmas,” and what all Christians know as the Epiphany, on January 6, when the Three Kings visit the Christ Child bearing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Liturgically, the Catholic Church in the United States celebrates this feast on the Sunday in between January 2 and 8. A long-standing tradition is tied to the Feast of the Epiphany: the blessing of the home with an inscription written above each door in the home. The inscription may be written in chalk or some easily cleaned medium and is specific to the new year, looking as follows: 20+C+M+B+16.

According to catholicculture.org, the letters r e p r e s e n t t h e L a t i n w o r d s C h r i s t u s Mansionem Benedicat (Christ, Bless this house). These letters also represent the first letter in the traditional name of each of the Three Kings: Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. They are united by four crosses, representing the four Gospels as well as the instrument of

our salvation.

Families may bless their home by taking home holy water and using a prayer service comparable to the one found on the site below, afterwards inscribing 20+C+M+B+16 above the mantels of their doors.

This movement, designed and supported by many of the top technology companies in the world, was started in 2013 to introduce children to Computational Thinking, and beginning coding, or programming, skills. For more information, or to explore coding yourself, check out www.code.org/learn. The students at all grade levels were engaged in the online or unplugged activities. Maybe the next Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerburg is sitting in a classroom here at SJB!

For the Year of Mercy, St. John the Beloved will offer “Wisdom & Works of Mercy”, a program by Fr. Michael E. Gaitley, MIC.

The program aims to help us take our wisdom and our faith as inspiration to works of mercy in our families, parishes, and communities. This class provides insights into the relevance of the Trinity in our daily lives, and helps us to put our faith into action. Each week we intend to invite a charity from our community to explain their works and show us how we might be able to help them with our Time, Talent, and Treasure. “Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.”

Beginning January 7 we will meet Thursday evenings from 6:30 until 8:00 for 11 sessions. Registering in advance will help us plan facilities and materials. For further information, to sign up for the meetings, and to order books, contact Deacon Dennis at 302-981-4567 or [email protected].

St. John the Beloved will offer “The Book of Isaiah”, a program by Fr. Mitch Pacwa, a popular host on EWTN. This book has been called “The Fifth Gospel” and “The Gospel of

the Old Testament”. It includes the following quotes: “Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and call His name Immanuel” and “He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities, for He Himself is the Prince of Peace”. However, unlike the four Gospels, it was written more than 700 years before the birth of Christ. Beginning January 5 we will meet Tuesday evenings from 6:30 until 8:00 for 26 sessions. Registering in advance will help us plan facilities and materials. For further information, to sign up for the meetings, and to order books, contact Deacon Dennis at 302-981-4567 or [email protected].

Meet the RCIA Candidate Grace Roscoe

I am Grace Roscoe, an avid photographer, equestrian, book-lover, and writer at age 13. I have three siblings: an older sister, age 15, and two younger brothers, ages 6 and 3. My siblings and I are home-schooled by my Mom. God has truly blessed our family with loving parents to guide us in His way.

I started going to RCIA primarily because my Mom was going, but now I am interested in learning more about the amazing story of the Catholic Church and their traditions. I am really enjoying RCIA and what it teaches. The classes have really given me perspective about God and how He moves in my life. Things that I've learned there have helped me to understand why certain things happen in the Church and what they mean.

I have attended Mass since I was pretty young, when we moved here to Delaware. I was four, and before that we were non-denominational. I had never really known what was going on during the Mass before, and often found myself pondering why Catholics did this, or why they did that. These classes are helping me to feel more at home during Mass and I am gaining more understanding of the Church every week. God has set before me a wonderful opportunity that I hope is a reminder and inspiration to others just how great He is.

OUTREACH

Please note:

Clothes Closet reopens January 6.

OUTREACH THANK YOU TO ST. JOHN THE BELOVED PARISHIONERS!

Once again the extraordinary generosity of the St. John the Beloved parish has provided abundant help to needy families. At Thanksgiving and Christmas, through your generous contributions, your Outreach Program provided a chicken, turkey, or ham, and groceries to more than 180 families, including 17 large cooked dinners donated by our Pike Creek Acme.

Many individuals and groups deserve special thanks for their contributions, food drives, and other help, including St. John the Beloved School, SJB Religious Education Program, Parish Life, Knights of Columbus, Prayer Group, Linden Hill Elementary School, Sodality, St. Vincent de Paul Society, SJB athletic programs, area high school students, St. Mark’s cheerleaders, and SJB scout troops and Brownies. We also thank our pastor and priests and the parish staff for their continuing support.

The Giving Tree Program distributed a total of about 1,500 gifts to about 1,000 individuals, including twenty-three families who were adopted. Children in all of the families received at least two gifts, and the head of the household received a gift certificate. The Giving Tree Program, launched in October, is a very challenging and very successful undertaking, and we extend special thanks to all of our contributors.

And last, but never least, a sincere thank you to all of our Outreach volunteers, who faithfully dedicate hundreds of hours during the Christmas season—and all year long—to helping feed and clothe our families. May God bless all of you, and may 2016 be a healthy, happy, and productive year for you and your families.

Listen to Catholic Forum every Sunday morning at 10:05 a.m. on WDEL 101.7 FM, 1150 AM and www.wdel.com.
