Duncan, grandmother of Hilary and Meredith Duncan who passed away on January 21

I am a fan of singing the scrip-tures instead of reading them. Surprise…..surprise. One of the scriptures for this Sunday is 1 Corinthians 13:1-13. Many of us have heard portions of it at weddings or during a regular Sunday sermon.

One of the hymns this week is “The Gift of Love” UMH 408. According to Carlton R. Young in his Companion to the United Methodist Hymnal, Hal Hopson, has given us a “brief paraphrase” of Paul’s exposition on love. The three stanza hymn reflects the first three verses in chapter thir-teen of the Apostle’s letter to the Corinthians.

We can be eloquent speak-ers and prophets or give away all of our possessions, but if we do not love, our work is in vain. We might as well be

noisy gongs and clashing cymbals if we do not love. If we do not love, we have nothing.

On of my favor-ite current hymn writers of the 21st Century is Rev. John Thornburg.

Ordained in the United Meth-odist Church,

his passion is congregational song. In 2004, he wrote the text “With All I Am.” We can master all things known and forfeit all we own. However, if we do not love, we search in vain to discover God. Love does not hide, delay, run away, or threaten. Love does not bully. Love believes, hopes, and endures all things.

Love never fails. Love never surrenders. Love never ends.

In The Garden this month the 1st-5th grades are be-ing taught about “The Four Friends”. Based on the scrip-ture Mark 2:1-12, the children are learning that Jesus can touch our lives through the lives of others. Four faithful and creative friends believed in the power of Jesus to heal their friend – a paralytic. In the Apple Tree Art Studio, led by Kristin Nelson, the children are weaving mats like the one on which the friends carried the lame man to Jesus; in Picnic

Pond, led by M.C. Ford, they are making a house (with a hole in the roof) out of graham crackers, marshmal-lows and icing; in The Arena (games), led by Jennifer Frith, kids are playing “Four Friends Tic Tac Toe”; in Tent Tales (sto-rytime), led by Jeri Byrd, they are role playing; and in the BibleMax, led by Alan Yokem, the children are watching the movie “Lending a Help-ing Hand” that teaches “if you don’t help, then you harm”. In each rotation the scripture is

reinforced and experienced in a different way.

Each grade in The Garden is led by an adult leader(s) called “Gardeners”. Those Gardeners this year are Susanna Desho-tel-first grade; Callie Hamm and Marcie Harner-second grade; Debbie Duncan-third grade; Sandy Humphreys and Toni Edwards-4th grade; Trey & Angie Daniel-fifth grade. You can follow the popcorn smell up to The Garden – you are welcome to come check us out.

On February 23 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. you are invited to join us for “Experiencing Prayer”, a retreat designed to explore the various methods of prayer.

Have you longed for an intimate, alive relationship with God? Have you ever wanted to say with the disciples, “Lord, teach us/teach me to pray. . . please.” God meets us where we are and knows our longings. Come and enter a time set aside to explore ways of engaging with God in prayer through scripture, art, journaling, movement, music, silence, and finding new mean-ing in ancient words. Come with openness to the surprises of God, the hidden holies of ordinary life. We will worship together, have time in community together, time in small groups and time alone.

The fee for the retreat is $10 which includes the cost of materials. Childcare is available for the event. Register at the Welcome Center, Reception Area or visit us onlline at www.broadmoorumc.org. For more information, contact Rev. Kathy Wafer at [email protected] or 861-0586.
