DearFriendsinChrist,

LastSunday,ourparishkickedoffitsannualStewardshipCampaign,andIaskedyoutoprayerfullyconsiderhowyoumightshareyourtime,talents,andtreasureinsupportofparishlifehereattheChurchofFrancisdeSales.Thisweek,ourfocusisontheelementoftime:howyoumightshareyourtimetomakeourfamily,parish,diocese,community,andtheworldabetterplace.

StewardshipisalifestylethathelpsustodiscoveradeeperunderstandingofourrelationshipwithGod,ourselves,andothers.ItisajoyfulresponsetotheGospel’sinvitationtorecognizeourresponsibilitytoliveourlivesascaretakersofGod’sgifts.BecomingadiscipleofJesusChristleadstothepracticeofstewardship;followingHimisalife-longjourneythatincludesprayer,study,reflection,andaction—eachofthesethingstakestime.

AsAmericans,weareblessedtoexperienceourcountry’smanytechnical,commercial,andeconomicadvantages.However,theseadvantagesalsointroduceinusthestruggleagainsttheselfishnessofunbalancedpersonaldesiresinfluencedbyasecularculturethatincreasinglymakesitmoredifficulttoacceptthechallengeoffollowingChrist.OurbaptismgaveeachofustheopportunityforlifeintheSpirit;italsoconferredgreatresponsibility.Paul’slettertotheEphesianscallsonusto“liveinamannerworthyofthecall[we]havereceived.”

Aswithallofcreation,timeisagiftfromGodtheFather.Wecannotstop,reverse,oraltertime.Hehasgivenusacertainamountoftimeinourlives,andwemustchoosehowtouseitwisely.Therearemanywaystouseourtimetosustainandgrowarichandrewardingparishlife.Someofthosewaysincludeassistingassacristans,lectors,ExtraordinaryEucharisticMinisters,catechists,ushers,orgriefcounseling.Itmightalsoinvolvecoordinatingspecialfundraisingevents,assistingwithHandsAcrossMathews,helpingwithhospitalityafterMassorfunerals,participatinginmusicministry,andsomuchmore.Ifcircumstanceslimityourtime,oryouareunabletomoveaboutasmuchasyouwouldlike,usingyourtimetofollowChristincludesprayingforothers,attendingMass,receivingtheSacramentofPenance,andspendingtimeinadorationoftheEucharist.Pleasetalkwithsomeonealreadyservinginoneofourministries,orreviewthevarietyofvitalministrieslistedinourbulletins,tohelpseewhereyoumightdevotesomeofyourtime.

JesustaughtthemasonewithauthorityandnotliketheScribes.

TheauthorityofJesusisfoundednotinpowerbutinHisbeingtheSonofGod,Godhimself.JesusisnotlikeanyotherprophetbeforeHim,Heisthefulfillmentofalltheprophetsandtheirmessage.Jesus’authorityisexpressedbothinHisproclamationsandinHisactions.InJesuspeopleexperiencedanauthoritythattheyfoundattractive,anauthoritythat,inthewordsofthegospel,leftthemsoastonishedthattheystartedaskingeachotherwhatitallmeant.JesuswasrecognizedasapersonofauthoritybecauseofthewordthatHespokeandtheimpactforgoodofthatwordonothers.ThepowerofGod’sloveworkingthroughHimgaveHimthatauthoritywhichpeoplefoundsoattractiveandsonew.Astatementcarriesauthorityaccordingtotwoaspects:whoisspeakingandwhatisbeingsaid.Jesushadboth.HehadauthoritybecauseofwhoHewas.HewastheSonofGod,GodHimself.HealsohadauthorityduetowhatHesaid.HespoketheFather’sWordtous.Hetaughtus:toloveourenemies,tobekindtooneanother,toforgiveeachother,andtotakecareofthoseinneed,thepoor.HespokewithHisactions.HespokeaboutGod'skingdomandlivedastheidealmemberofthatkingdom.HeHimselfwaskind,loving,caring,respectful,andforgiving.Hehadauthority,andHehasauthority.WeneedtolistenandfollowHim.JesuscallsustospeakforHim.Hegivesusauthority.ForustoexercisethisauthoritywemustliveascommittedChristians.Weallhaveauthority.WehaveauthorityasChristiansduetoourbaptismandfaith.JesusdidnotcallusjusttodosomeofthethingsHedid,HecalledustobeHispresenceforothers.Wearecalledtodestroyevilinourworld.WecannotdothisunlesswearedeterminedtobeChristlike.WehavetospeakinthewaythatJesusspoke.Jesusspokewithauthority.HewasnotlikethescribesandPharisees.Hewasnottwofaced.Hewasnothypocritical.Hewashonest.Hedidnotjustspeakthetruth,HewastheTruthIncarnate.Hedidnotjusttellustolove,butHeHimselflovedthepeople,Hecaredforthem,Hefedthehungry,healedthesickandforgavesinners.JesuscametoestablishthekingdomofGod.InthiskingdomofGodthereisnoplaceforevil.Thus,todayweseeJesusdefeatingthedevil,representedbythemanwhowaspossessedbythedevilwhomJesuscured.Now,Jesushasauthorityovereverything,HecannowestablishGod’skingdom;akingdomofloveandcareforoneanother,akingdomoffreedom,akingdomwhereallaresetfreefromsufferingofanykind.ThisauthorityofJesus,toteachandtoestablishGod’skingdom,isnowentrustedtoHisChurch,toyouandme.Yes,wehavetheauthoritytoteachpeoplehowtolivegoodlives;wehavetheauthoritytoliberatepeoplefromtheirsuffering.ThatauthorityliesinourfaithinJesus,inourbaptism,inourlivingaccordingtotheGospel.IfweliveaccordingtoourChristianvalues,wewillthenbepeopleofauthority,notbasedonanypowerweholdbutbasedonthecredibilityandconsistencyofourlives.Theeffectofdoingthisisthatsocietyitselfwillchangeandbecomebetter.WeChristianswillhavebecomeanactiveleavenintheworld.Ourpatience,toleranceandgentlenesswillhavebecomeinfectiousandwillhavespreadfromthetoptothebottomofoursociety.WewillwakeuponedayanddiscoverthatwehavebuiltupthekingdomofGodhereonearth.
