Safe Car Ministry St John the Baptist Parish has been able to offer a safe parking environment for local homeless people for about a year. We wanted to help this Ministry because we have worked with the homeless in Seattle prior to coming to St John the Baptist. We know that people who are homeless are not only marginalized; they are misunderstood. No one plans to be homeless. No one wants to be without a place that they feel secure. It is easy to look at the homeless problem in our area and in our country with detachment. But, if you look at it on a personal level, you begin to see where the love resides and the impact a simple ministry like this can have on someone. Individually, each one of these people has a story to tell. Most are heartbreaking. But they can also be inspiring. It might surprise you to learn who the homeless really are. Many are older citizens. Most have some source of in-come, but not enough to afford the necessities and com-forts that we take for granted. Of our current guests that park in our lot each night two are older, single women. None of our guests wants to be in these circumstances. But yet, they know that they can find a safe place with us. As the saying goes, “there but for the grace of God, go I”. And truly, despite our confidence to the contrary, any one of us could find ourselves in desperate circumstances where our world is suddenly turned upside down and all we have is gone. Christ said the last shall be first and the first shall be last. These people are more likely to be at the front of the line than most of us. But they are not seeking our pity. They are seeking a path to be back into the mainstream of so-ciety. They want a home. They want a steady income. But mostly, they want to be accepted as people just like us. If you can spare the time to help this ministry it would be greatly appreciated. All we really do is ensure that they are safe while they park in our lot. We monitor the grounds nightly via remote CCTV and visit once or twice a week to be sure all is well. Our guests are so grateful for the love we have shown them in providing this safe place. We hope you join us as we help them move forward to-wards a safe home and a happy life filled with love. What more could one ask?

Coffee and Donut Sunday January 12, 2020 After the 9am and 11:30 am Mass

On the Sunday of the Epiphany of the Lord, we hear about gifts in the gospel reading. The image of gift is an appropriate one since today, on Epiphany Sunday, we acknowledge and celebrate the gift of God’s saving grace offered to everyone in the birth of his Son Jesus. Each Epiphany Sunday, the Gospel reading is Matthew’s account of the visit of the Magi. Three important truths are revealed in this sacred story. First, God alone directs salvation history. King Herod tried to exercise control over the newborn Christ, assembling the chief priests and scribes of the people and meeting secretly with the Magi in an attempt to conceal his true motives to harm the in-fant. But God protected the baby Jesus, Mary and Jo-seph ,and the Magi, directing all of them to safety. A sec-ond revealed truth is that God prepared us for this gift through the words of the Jewish prophets. We hear that the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem fulfills what the prophet Micah had foretold nearly eight centuries earlier: “Bethlehem...from you shall come a ruler, who is to shep-herd my people Israel” (see Micah5:1). A third revealed truth is that Jesus is God’s gift to all nations. The Magi who brought gifts to Jesus are traditionally identified as Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar. These three astrologers from the East represented the other major nations of the world in the time of Christ. Epiphany celebrates what the visit of the Magi reveals to us: God’s gift—the gift of his newborn Son—is a gift of-fered to all people, for which god has long-prepared the world.

What does it mean to love our neigh-

bors in the midst of such a divisive

climate? Catholics are called to bring

the best of ourselves and our faith to

the public square—and yet today,

many shy away from such involvement because our national

and local conversations are filled with anger and harsh lan-

guage, often directed at people themselves. As Catholics,

we must model a better way. We invite you to model love for

neighbor by pledging to Civilize It and committing to civility,

clarity, and compassion this election year. Civilize It: Dignity

Beyond the Debate is a non-partisan call to focus on the dig-

nity of all people, even those with whom we disagree, and to

put faith in action. Make room in your heart for those with

whom you disagree and pledge dignity beyond the debate

today at CivilizeIt.org!

January 5-11 is National Migration Week: — “Promoting a Church and a World for All” • Catholics are called to stand with immigrants and refugees as our brothers and sisters. This is who the Catholic Church is. This is what we as Catholics do. • Pope Francis invites us to be part of a culture of encounter as we welcome, protect, integrate, and promote immigrants and refugees in our midst. • Immigration is about real people who are trying to find a better life and a new beginning. Its about more than statis-tics, its about families. As Pope Francis stated, “Each mi-grant has a name, a face and a story.” • Welcoming immigrants is part of Catholic Social Teaching and reflects the Biblical tradition to welcome the stranger. • The Catholic Church has been welcoming immigrants and refugees to the United States since the nation’s founding and has been integral to helping them integrate into American culture. • In addition to welcoming and caring for those in need, the Church continues to uphold the centrality of family reunifica-tion as a critical component of our immigration and refugee systems. • Forced displacement of people is at the highest level since World War II, with more than 65 million people displaced around the world and over 22 million refugees. • Refugees are the most rigorously screened population coming into America. This screening happens before they ever set foot in our country. The United States has the most thorough background checks of immigrants of any nation in the world. Visit justiceforimmigrants.org/take-action/national-migration-week for more information.

Do you have a New Year’s resolution? If so, what is it?

As we celebrate this New Year, we thank all of you who generously share their Time, Tal-ent and Treasure. Your stewardship helps us share God’s blessings with many others. May 2020 be filled with joy and peace!

Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord: “You have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace..” This is how Saint Paul begins his letter to the members of the church at Ephesus in today’s second reading. He proclaims that he, and they, are stewards of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and therefore stewards of God’s loving, unifying and in-clusive grace. He also proclaims that the Holy Spirit is at work within each of them, if only they would be open to the Spirit. Today, our world races by with intolerance, vio-lence, desperate poverty, fear and division. At the begin-ning of this New Year, perhaps it is appropriate to reflect on Saint Paul’s words and ask ourselves how we can be good stewards of the gospel today. How will we allow the Holy Spirit to work within us? How can we be better stew-ards of Christ’s justice and peace?

Have you registered for the Craft & Hobby Retreat be-ing held on Friday, January 24 10 am to 9 pm and Satur-day, January 25 9am to 9 pm? The deadline to register is January 17th. Questions, call Nancy Moore at 253-630-0701 or email [email protected].
