Happy New Year Fellow Sailors! It is my privilege and honor to address all of you for the first time, in the first edition of the Epitaph for 2020. I have been preceded by a Commodore with big feet; hence, there are large footprints to fill. Mike Foster and his team have presented me with a financially stable club, and a nearly complete re-covery from the damage incurred by Florence. Who could ask for more!? I plan to lead the Club in a way that will maintain the Club’s collective vision…a sailing club accessible to all members, maintained in good physical and financial condition, and devoted to the promotion and enhancement of our pastime/sport. I am fortu-nate to have the support of many members who have contributed greatly to the Club’s management for many years. Thank you all for your support! Feel free, of course, to contact me at any time about Club issues.

After our meal catered by Two Chefs Catering, the Officers & Directors for 2020 will be introduced and awards, including the infamous Blunder Bucket will be awarded. Following the awards, our own Arch Altman and friends will play music for our listening and dancing pleasure. Because this is a catered event, sign-ups are a must and space is limited.

• Beef Tenderloin Tips with Mushroom Demi-Glace or • Shrimp Newberg or • Spinach and Gruyere Stuffed Chicken
Herb Rice Pilaf, Smoked Gouda Mashed Potatoes, Haricots Verts, Ginger Glazed Carrots and Yeast Rolls with Honey Butter will accompany entrees on the buffet followed by dessert. Cost is $30 per person charged to your Blackbeard account. As usual, bring your own beverage.

BLACKBEARD’S EPITAPHWelcome New Members
Gina & Danny Cochran are lifelong residents of Kannapolis, NC and have completed the membership process. Gina has been a Pre-K teacher for 27 years and is currently work-ing. Danny has 28 years IT hardware experience and 9 years City of Concord Electric Department experience. His plans are to re-tire December 31 and let Gina support him. They have 2 children, Shawn and Amber, both NC State graduates living in Rockwell, NC. They enjoy two grandchildren, Emilyn – 8 and Jackson – 6, who are the loves of their lives. Sailing experience includes a Hobie 16 catamaran bought in ’81, sailing on Lake Norman and sailing on their annual vacation at the beach. Recently they purchased a MacGregor 26 S and plan to use it at BSC for Sound and ICW cruising. Their motto with the Hobie is “Keep the pointy side up”.

George & Marilyn Sechrist have completed the membership process. George started sailing in 1962 and raced an old Star in 1963. He has been racing various classes ever since. During this time, Marilyn crewed for him for 15 years, and their youngest daughter crewed for 7 years. For the past 30 years George has owned both a sailboat and a powerboat. In the past 30 years, George has owned and raced several dif-ferent Stars, Lasers and Sunfish, continuing today. George has also skippered the Ensign Darkside. George has been Star 12th District Champion (Blue Star) and a Sunfish Southeast Regional Champion. Memberships (past and present) include: Red Jacket Yacht Club, Cayuga Lake, NY (30 years), Sailing Club of Oriental (20 years), Oriental Dinghy Club (22 years), ISCYRA (life member), Laser class (20 years), Sunfish class (15 years), US Sailing and predecessors (50 years), and FHYC (2 years).

BLACKBEARD’S EPITAPH
Blast from the Past!Last month we published the Epitaph from November 1975 and learned that, even back then, Blackbeard Sailing Club was making footprints in the sand. We had purchased land, built and electrified our first docks, and were experiencing tremendous growth in membership. This month we’ll be skipping ahead two months and looking at the Epitaph from January 1976. For the arithmetic-challenged, that’s 44 years ago from the Epitaph you’re reading right now. So, what was happening at BSC 44 years ago? You’ll need to read that old Epitaph for yourself to get the full details, but here are some highlights.
In January 1976, the membership was enjoying winter racing. Fred Latham, for whom today’s New Year’s Day race is named, had won the second race of the Frost Bite Series in his San Juan 21, Mad Mama. The Commodore was musing aloud about purchasing additional land, and if the road should be graveled. He was asking if it was important that the clubhouse be built on the water or if it could be across the road. And he was wondering if every member should be required to participate on a committee.
There are some personal references in this old Epitaph too. For example, it is noted that local racer and BSC founding member, Tom McKnight, had just celebrated the birth of a daughter. And, besides Fred Latham and Tom McKnight, you may recognize some of the other names mentioned. It’s interesting and informative reading.
