Dear Brothers & Sisters,I’m sure that you are all tired

of shoveling snow this winter, as I am. All those who have been in a nice warm climate this winter God bless you.

As we all know membership is the lifeline of the order sons of Italy, and as we all know just like every other organization in this country, membership is dropping. It’s every member’s obligation to help us increase our membership. If each mem-ber brought in just one new member per year we would be the envy of every organization.

We all know that things have change from 1905, when Dr. Vincenzo Sellaro the found-er of the Order Sons of Italy, started this great organization. Then the average hourly wage was 22 cents per hour, average annual income was between 200 to 400 dollars, two in ten adults could not read or write, there were about 8,000 cars and 144 miles of paved roads, only six percent of all Americans had graduated high school, more than 95 percent of all births took place at home.

Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub, only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone, the fi ve leading causes of death were pneumonia, influenza, tuberculosis, diarrhea, heart disease and stroke, in that order, the average life expec-tancy was 47 years of age, only

230 murders were reported in the entire U.S.

So as you can see life in the United States has changed dramatically. For the Order Sons of Italy to survive, we too must change. We must change and adapt to today’s Italian Americans, we must start new programs that will interest younger members. Some lodges have already adopted some new recruiting methods like networking, the Internet, Face book, Tweeter, and other elec-tronic means.

So I ask every lodge that has recruited well to share your methods with all of our lodges so we can all reap the benefi ts, and continue going forward with this great order.

As most of you know this year is the 150th Anniversary of the Unifi cation of Italy, and together with the Consul General’s Of-fi ce, and all Italian organiza-tions in the state of Massachu-setts, there will be many activi-ties and functions that will be held throughout the state. The Grand Lodge of Massachusetts will be hosting an event at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, Massachusetts, on the fi rst Sunday in August, more information to follow, so please save the date.

I would like to thank our Ital-ian Culture Chairman, Brother Pat Moreno and his lovely wife Sheryl for the hard work they

put into our Carnevale Vene-ziano, it was a great night, but unfortunately the weather did not cooperate, but all those who attended had a wonderful meal and a great time.

Our sport commissioner brother Steve DeAngelis and his commissioners held our annual Dart Tournament at the Newton lodge.

Thanks to the Newton men’s lodge for being such great hosts.

Law and justice breakfast, our signature event, will be held at Lombardo’s in Randolph, Mas-sachusetts. On May 1, 2011, please come join us to celebrate with our outstanding recipients and their families.

Again I ask all our brothers and sisters to come forth with any new and innovative ideas that will help the Order Sons of Italy in America continue to be the voice of Italian Americans.

It is that time of year again when we elect new Officers for the Filial Lodges, as you all know the new by-law takes effect this year, all offi cers will be elected for a two (2) year term.

Kathy and I would like to thank all the lodges that have invited us to their Carnivals, and other functions their lodges have held.

May god bless you all and may god bless the order sons of Italy.

LODGE HISTORIES

QUATTRO EROI LODGE #1414

In this issue we are featuring the Quattro Eroi Lodge #1414, of Franklin, MA. If you have not as yet sent in your lodge history, please do and send it to the attention of our Historical Chairman Delia Bartucca at the Grand Lodge Offi ce, 93 Concord Ave., Belmont, Massachusetts 02478.

Quattro Eroi Lodge 1414 was instituted on March 30, 1928. The Lodge was named after four Franklin boys of Italian descent that had made the ultimate

sacrifi ce for our Country dur-ing World War I. They included: Emilio Daddario, Alfred Muc-ciarone, Alexander Patete and Patrick Ristaino.

Our Lodge Founders were Emando Bianchini, Augostino DeBaggis and Joseph Vipraio.

Below is our list of Venerables and Presidents:

For nearly 30 years, the Bay State Baseball organization has been Don McGowan’s focus during the summer months. With McGowan as a principal founder and driving force, the league has expanded from 16 teams to 120, divided across three age levels.

Established to provide Little League-age players the oppor-tunity to extend their seasons into the summer, Bay State Baseball serves approximately 1,500 youngsters ages 9 to 12, with games played on fi elds in fi ve dozen communities across Greater Boston.

“We wanted to fi ll the void left by organized baseball pro-grams,” said the 77-year-old McGowan, who stepped down as president after the Tourna-ment of Champions season fi nale.

Driving Force Behind Regional Baseball League

DON McGOWAN STEPS DOWNas Head of Bay State Baseball Summer Youth League

In 1981, the Burlington resident and the heads of four other local leagues — Dick Garber in Brookline, David Kale in Cambridge, Herb Levine and Ralph Fusco in Framing-ham, and Don Soule in Sud-bury — began drawing up a solution.

The group reached a “gentle-men’s agreement” that after the 1982 season, they would begin working toward a long-range solution, establishing a league with a schedule that would challenge the players but be workable for families.

“From the very beginning Don has been committed to expanding the league,” vice president Stephen Zerdelian said of McGowan.

“He has been there since the beginning and has served the league in a variety of ways — as

a founder, a coach, a division commissioner, a VP, and for 10 years now he’s been president. He’s stayed true to the league’s mission, which he helped create — to get kids to play summer baseball — and we’ve grown signifi cantly.

League play started in 1983 and two additional divisions were added the following sea-son, tripling the size of the league. In 2004, under McGow-an’s presidency, the league eliminated a rule that had lim-ited the maximum size of each division to 32 teams.

“We opened our doors to any community that wants to play,” said McGowan. “That’s been our biggest accomplish-ment: keep kids playing base-ball. I’ve got to believe it’s made a big difference in a lot of communities.

Dear Brothers & Sisters:As an appointed commissioner of the Benefi t Insurance Commission, I recognize the need to provide additional benefi ts to our

members while looking for ways to generate income for the Grand Lodge. I have been spending the past few months designing a program that I believe has value for all Sons of Italy Members.

It is therefore with great pleasure that I am announcing an insurance program designed to provide savings directly to you on your auto and home insurance while generating income for our beloved Grand Lodge of Massachusetts.

The program operates like a Cooperative. When we all buy together we benefi t directly through special discounts and the Grand Lodge benefi ts through increased revenue.

Participation in the program does not require any extra effort on your part. The Grand Lodge Auto and Home Program functions this way:

1. You contact Ross Zagami – Benefi t Insurance Commissioner 2. I provide you with a quote3. You receive savings 4. The Grand Lodge receives a marketing fee for every policy that is writtenWe all know how challenging it is for the Grand Lodge to meet its fi nancial obligations locally as well as nationally. Every dollar

counts. You will see that the Grand Lodge Auto and Home Program can help meet this challenge by generating meaningful income for our Grand Lodge.

GETTING STARTED IS EASYTo start helping yourself and the Grand Lodge call for a no obligation quote:Ross Zagami 617-484-4466 (phone) 617-484-4467 (fax)Keep in mind that a large percentage of Massachusetts auto insurance policies renew in January.

Every year, the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts hosts two separate parties for the resi-dents of the North End Nurs-ing Home and the Don Orione Nursing Home. Charity Com-missioner Chairman Mary Lou Abbatessa and her commission planned the events.

Special gifts, which were purchased or donated, were wrapped individually for the residents of the nursing homes.

Nursing Home Partiesby Dorothy Berlandi

Danny Ventola and his accom-panist provided music.

A hallmark of these events is the arrival of Santa Claus; through the years we have had many different Santa’s, and we thank these individuals for giving their time for the enjoy-ment of these shut-ins. There were also many types of baked goods prepared, like soft bis-cotti, lemon cookies, Angeloni cookies, otherwise known as

“mix by hand” cookies, as well as ice cream and punch. The commission members donated all the snack items.

Christmas carols and Italian songs were sung throughout the afternoon and the residents were encouraged to dance with some of the Commission members. It was amazing to notice the looks of happiness on their faces dur-ing the familiar songs, as many of the residents sang along.

T h e m o m e n t t h e y a l l seemed to be waiting for was the appearance of Santa Claus, who arrived to distri-bute the gifts and greeted all the residents personally. The afternoon came to an end, and everyone was escorted back to his or her room, already ea-gerly waiting for another year to pass before the next Christmas party.

Special thanks to our dedicat-

ed mainstays: State President James DiStefano, Carmelita Bello, Antonio Sestito, Florence Ferullo Kane, Angelo and Carol Rossi, Franco Battista, Cathy Bourassa, Ron and Ann Hill, Matt Ezekiel, Chairman Mary Lou Abbatessa, Michael Ab-batessa, Janice Pomeroy, Jay Larosee, Dom Campochiaro, Dorothy Berlandi, and last but not least, our Santa Robert Oliverio.

Line a twelve-inch skillet with canola oil and heat over medium fl ame. Leave bone in if using shoulder chop but remove extra fat from veal shoulder chop. Place veal in heated skillet to sear and brown. Remove meat from skillet and set aside. Add cel-ery, onions and capers to the skillet. Stir until onion is opaque. Do not brown onion. Add a little of the vinegar and water from the capers’ bottle. Add bay leaf (optional) and simmer about two or three minutes before adding chopped tomato pieces. Stir occasionally and cover. Simmer slowly for about three minutes. Meanwhile, dissolve bouillon cube in warm water. Slowly stir in bouillon mixture into skillet. Add garlic and veal into skillet. Cover and cook about ten minutes over medium heat.

Peel and slice carrots into wedge about two inches long. Cut tips of string beans if using fresh beans and wash thoroughly. Peel potatoes and cut into two-inch wedges. Add carrots fi rst to skillet. Cover and cook them about fi ve minutes before adding string beans and potato pieces.

Add additional water if needed. Cook until potatoes and vegetables are tender. Season to taste. If bay leaf is used, remove before serving meal.

NOTE: I learned from my mother to vary the recipe by occasion-ally adding a can of mushrooms to the skillet. Another option is to add sliced green peppers or some green peas. In place of potatoes, I sometimes prepare some of my favorite rice and serve it plain or topped with a few tablespoons of sauce from the skillet.

songs, which everyone enjoyed. When the food buffet was ready, guests partook in a buffet and homemade delicacies graciously baked by our members. The buffet consisted of a variety of Italian cold cuts, provolone cheese, fresh Italian bread, olives, peppers, condiments, salad, macaroni salad, soda and coffee. Many members from both the Fitchburg and Leomin-ster lodges were in attendance and enjoyed the festivities. While members were fi nishing their meals, they were informed that there were still a few cook-books left that members could purchase.

As the night continued, Bob Pacetti, president of the Fitch-burg Lodge, announced a sur-prise for the night. Bob then

took to the stage and announced he would do a rendition of En-gelbert Humperdinck’s “Release Me” and “After the Lovin’” as members joyfully got up to dance. To add to the ambience of the night, there were vari-ous blinking colored lights and moving background lights on the stage. Bob continued on to sing the Righteous Brothers’ “Unchained Melody,” and Si-natra’s “My Way,” as members continued to dance and enjoy the evening. He led the group in Christmas songs such as “Jingle Bells,” “Deck the Halls,” and other Christmas favorites, with all joining in.

Many members were in atten-dance that night; also attending were Bob Pacetti’s daughters, Christine and Elizabeth, son-in-law Andy (all members of the Fitchburg Lodge), and grandson Jake, who was a real charmer to those in attendance that night (at a year old and walking, wearing a vest and tie like his grandfather). Sylvia and Russ Poirier picked-up food; Sylvia Poirier, Ann Pacetti, Florence

Volpe, Russ Poirier, MaryAnn Michaelian, and Bobby Poirier handled setup. Bob Pacetti handled stage setup and music setup, as well as other members who assisted in the general set-up. Russ Poirier, Ann Pacetti, Christine Roy, Florence Volpe, Sylvia Poirier, Liz Pacetti, Andy Roy, Bob Pacetti and others were in charge of cleaning up. The Christmas Party Commit-tee members were Ann Pacetti, Sylvia Poirier, Florence Volpe, and Bob Pacetti. Everyone who attended enjoyed themselves and had a festive time.

Celebrates Christmas

With a multitude of merry spirits and a dash of good cheer, the sisters of South Shore Ladies Lodge #1851 of Hingham embodied the spirit of Christmas this past year.

Prior to the Christmas holiday, our decorating committee met to spruce up our Hingham lodge for our upcoming Christmas party. At our annual Christmas party, our sisters enjoyed a lovely Ital-ian meal catered by Lucia’s Cucina of Hull. This past year, our membership has increased, giving us all another reason to celebrate.

In addition to all the merrymaking, and in

tribute to the true meaning of Christmas, the lodge gave to the less fortunate through local charitable organizations. Gift baskets were do-nated to New Baby Bundles, Inc., a South Shore based organization that supplies layettes and baby showers in gift bags to homeless women and their newborns living in shelters throughout eastern Massachusetts. (For more information, visit www.newbabybundles.org) Jean Tilden, one of our sisters, is a co-founder of this non-profi t organization. Food items were also collected and donated to the Marshfi eld food pantry.

On Monday, January 24, 2011, members of Worcester Lodge #168 joined forces with members of the Gene J. DeFeudis Italian American Cultural Center (IACC) for an evening of playing Italian card games and pizza. Attendees enjoyed a variety of pizzas and antipasto salads prepared by the owners and staff of Pepe’s in Worcester, who were gracious enough to open their restaurant especially for this event. Members of Lodge #168 and the IACC volunteered to teach those at the event how to play various Italian card games such as Scopa, Briscola, and Bestia!

It took a while to learn the card suits and their values, especially since there are no sevens, eights, or nines like there are in Ameri-can playing cards. Members may not have grasped the rules of the games immediately or completely, but the company was great, the conversations were enlightening, the food was delicious, and the games were fun!

Everyone had a great time. Maybe we’ll repeat this event in the future … and maybe we’ll even learn how to play more games!

The Winthrop Ladies Lodge #2071 held a wonderful holiday luncheon at the Winthrop Arms Hotel, with attendees State Presi-dent James DiStefano and First Lady Kathy DiStefano taking time from their busy schedule to share in the festivities. “Italy in Song” with Ferdinando Argenti was the special entertainment for the afternoon. Those in attendance took a fascinating voyage through Italian popular music with Ferdinando via song and keyboard. Ferdinando is a native of Pisa (Tuscany), Italy, and a graduate of Berklee College of Music. A professional jazz pianist, he has also studied singing with the Bel Canto Opera Company in Boston.

President Dottie D’Onofrio announced that a very successful merchants’ fundraising appeal has resulted in the continuation of the lodge’s Scholarship Awards program. Dena Carbone, a member of the Victor Emanuel Lodge #1646 (Haverhill), was honored recently as the oldest resident of Plaistow, New Hampshire, at the age of 97. The publisher of the Boston Post newspaper presented her with the gold-headed ebony Boston Post cane, continuing a tradition that was started in 1906. The cane was originally presented to the oldest male resident of one of 700 towns, and women became eligible for the honor in 1930.

According to an article written in the Eagle Tribune, Dena’s family immigrated to Haverhill after the 1916 earthquakes in her native town of Bisegna, Italy, destroyed their home. Dena is an accomplished teacher, artist and dressmaker who had such clients as the Rockefellers, DuPonts and some of Princess Grace’s bridesmaids.

Dena’s life is full of richness and stories that tell of a woman who continues to enjoy who she is and the talents that she shares.

LODGE NEWSThe Cavallo family of Wey-

mouth celebrated their 100 year anniversary in America with a good old-fashioned party at the homestead on Lake Street. Vincenzo Cav-allo came to America in 1910 from Poggio Imperiale, Italy to secure work and a home. He was followed by his wife, An-gelina and their two children in 1915. They were to have eight more children. The old-est photo enclosed of Vincenzo and Angelina was taken in 1935. A photo taken in 1955 shows some of their grand-children who now have be-come the elders in the photo taken at the party in 2010. The grape vine, estimated to be 92 years old was the focal point

IMMIGRATION: 100 YEARS LATERby Orlando N. Cavallo, Jr.

of the party and of course the homemade wine was fl owing, the Italian music was playing and food was aplenty.

Vincenzo Cavallo came to America to be an American. It was important to him that his children learn English. Like many Italian-American families, his sons fought in wars for the United States. In many old photos, family members can be seen wav-ing American fl ags. 100 years later, Vincenzo’s family has grown. We are now Americans with Italian traditions.

Although there are some American families that have been here for 300 years, this time period marks a milestone for many Americans, as their

ancestors came to this coun-try between 1880 and 1930 by the millions. Could these immigrants ever imagine the impact they would have in this country 100 years later? How many Americans understand the signifi cance of this time period? How many families could be celebrating their 100 year milestone and don’t even know it? This country was built from the sweat, tears and back breaking work ethic of these immigrants. That is why this 100 year milestone is so important. It is a time for all Americans, not just the immigrant families, to show a debt of gratitude and remem-ber the people who built this country.Angelina and Vincenzo Cavallo, circa 1935

on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 with a great banquet at Leo’s Ristorante. About 125 people attended the banquet to celebrate the close of bocce season. A buffet dinner with a wide variety of Italian food including appetizers of pizza, cheese and veggies to main dishes of pasta, eggplant parmesan, sausage and peppers, Italian meatballs and more were enjoyed by all.

President Donna Giuliani acknowledged Chairman Kevin Mercadante’s hard work and dedication to the lodge, noting that he chairs the bocce committee every year knowing it is a lot of work, stress and time.

Family and Friends Celebrate Christmasby Maria Sciannameo

Worcester Lodge #168 held its Christ-mas party on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel - St. Ann Center. Michael & Maria’s catering provided a delicious meal of Italian wed-ding soup, antipasto, roasted chicken, potatoes and vegetables, along with cof-fee and dessert, to 180 lodge members, families and friends. Although Lodge Chaplain, Msgr. Rocco Piccolomini, could not join us for the festivities, a Franciscan priest from Food for the Poor gave the blessing before the meal and thanked us for including him in our cel-ebration. Members of the lodge showed their thankfulness for all the blessings they have received throughout the year, and appreciated the opportunity to give homeless men, women and children some needed warmth in the form of hats, gloves, scarves and sweaters.

In addition to Christmas music, the evening’s festivities included a variety of music styles provided by DJ James Vuona. Everyone enjoyed the music and the dancing. Also part of the festivities were many raffl e baskets designed by lodge members and fi lled with various gift certifi cates and cards donated by members and local businesses. This year, a fi fty/fi fty candy guessing game was introduced. It was a lot of fun as people took several one-dollar guesses as to how many Hershey’s Candy Kisses were in a large vase. closest guess, without going over, won the vase with all the Hershey’s Kisses and 50% of the money. It was a great time watching everyone wonder and anticipate who would be the winner!

Coordinating this year’s event were the Sciannameo sisters, Vittoria Mas-trocola, Caterina Valentine, and Maria (Gina) Sciannameo, along with a won-derful crew of helpers who made the event a success. Helping with the set-up, clean up, and/or raffl e selling was: Mary Ann Bello, Margaret Campbell, Frances Carlson, Lucille Carrier, Rosalyn Con-siglio, Joan D’Argenis, Rita DeSimone, Josephine Genattosio, Donna Giuliani, Josephine Kangas, Elena Olivieri, Glo-ria Pacheco, Carolyn Padavano, Ginger Rinaldi, Michael Sacco, Aster Scarpone, Mary Sciannameo, and Vittoria Visci. President Donna Giuliani and Vice Pres-ident Mary Ann Bello assisted with the pulling of the tickets for raffl e winners. Members and local businesses donated great raffl e items.

Everyone had a wonderful time and felt blessed with this great opportunity to share some good will. A heartfelt “thank you” goes out to all who helped and supported this event in any way. We are already looking forward to next year’s party!

In addition to the Christmas party, the lodge took the time to wish Sister Gladys Bello a very happy 95th birthday!
