It is wonderful to see so many residents enjoying the summer holidays with friends and family at our beautiful resort. It is such a lovely place to have loved ones stay, with plenty to do both in the resort and in the local area - there are lots of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors here! The town is a hive of activity with people fishing on the foreshore, children jumping the waves at our patrolled surf beach while the cafes, clubs, restaurants and ice cream shop do a roarin’ trade!

Here at the resort, we have only one brand new home left for sale but we do have a few well maintained pre-loved homes available also. That is one of the many benefits of living in Palm Lake Resort Tea Gardens – your home maintenance is done for you! Our sales centre is open Monday to Friday, so if you are in the area, enjoying the great outdoors, then why not pop in and we can show you around.

DRUMROLL PLEASE. THE PANTONE COLOUR OF THE YEAR FOR 2020 IS… PANTONE 19-4052 “CLASSIC BLUE”.

Yep, blue. And it’s a wonderful shade that is perfect for homes, fashion, everything really! According to Pantone, this colour represents “a dependable and stable foundation to move forward to a new era”. It brings calmness, confidence and connection, they say. “We are living in a time that requires trust and faith. It is this kind of constancy and confidence that is expressed by Classic Blue, a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on,” says Leatrice Eiseman of the Pantone Colour Institute. While Classic Blue is perfect on its own, it is also a versatile colour. Pantone suggests pairing it with saffron yellow, soft pink and even rich forest green.

BOWLS AND BALLS: If you’re new to exercise, get in some light activity with lawn bowls and tenpin bowling, for starters. Our resort’s Bowls Club is very active with everything from twilight bowls to social games to serious competition. It’s a great sport for over-50s to play and with the kind of world-class undercover lawn bowls green that our resort offers, as well as the very social nature of our Bowls Club, it’s hard to say no! If you’re looking for air-conditioned comfort, try tenpin bowling in our Country Club (pictured). It’s a game worth practising so that when your visiting family members drop in (especially the little ones!), you’ve got a great game to play together. You might be able to teach them a trick or two!

HIT THE GYM: Our resort also offers a well-equipped gymnasium that is equally as inviting as it is convenient (pictured). If you’re new to the gym, don’t be nervous. We have a personal trainer who offers group sessions of four residents in our gym on Thursdays commencing at 10.30am. Residents can also make appointments for personal sessions any time. Our PT is here to help you learn how to use the machines and also assist you in putting together a program that will help you reach your fitness goals.

SWINGING: Is golf one of those sports that you’ve always wanted to try but haven’t yet found the time to? Our golf simulator room will help you get a feel for the game, and all in air-conditioned comfort. You can even ‘travel’ the world in our golf simulator room - playing international courses right from your own backyard! If our resort’s golf simulator room entices you to take up the sport, golf can be a great way to get fit while having fun. Did you know that you can walk up to seven kilometres playing an 18-hole golf course? Reports state walking can benefit your health in more ways than one – it can reduce your risk of heart disease, improve the fitness of your heart and lungs, help to manage conditions like muscle and joint stiffness, high cholesterol and diabetes, strengthen your bones and even improve your balance.

SWIMMING: And don’t forget that swimming is great for gentle exercise that’s low-stress on your joints - and it’s perfect for this summer. Join aqua aerobics held 9am Tuesday & Thursdays or head outside and swim some easy regular laps in our gorgeous tropical pool (pictured).

IF YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION IS TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GET HEALTHIER AND/OR FITTER THIS YEAR, PALM LAKE RESORT TEA GARDENS’ WORLD-CLASS FACILITIES WILL SUPPORT YOUR WELLBEING. HERE ARE SOME EASY WAYS TO START YOUR 2020 FITNESS JOURNEY THIS SUMMER.

TURN UP THE HEAT¡¡

IT’S BEEN A POPULAR FINNISH PASTIME FOR CENTURIES, BUT RECENT STUDIES HAVE REVEALED THAT SPENDING TIME IN A SAUNA DOESN’T JUST FEEL GOOD – IT COULD ALSO BE INCREDIBLY GOOD FOR YOU.

A study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings has reported that regular sauna bathing can bring about physical benefits similar to those associated with moderate exercise. While this isn’t to say that sauna bathing should completely replace exercise – a combined approach has yielded the best results – there is plenty of evidence to suggest that hitting the sauna a few times a week can offer numerous physical benefits. And here at Palm Lake Resort Tea Gardens, we’ve got you covered!

While there is no active functioning of the skeletal muscles during sauna bathing, the heat and increase in heartrate – typically from baseline up to 120 to 150 BPM – is said to increase muscle blood flow, aiding in better joint health and systemic blood pressure.

Sauna bathing has been found to benefit cardiovascular function, with two reports investigating the effects of regular sauna bathing on the long-term risk of cardiovascular disease. One found an increase in sauna bathing habits to be associated with reduced risk of sudden cardiac death, while the other found that sauna bathing four to seven times a week reduced the risk of stroke by 62 per cent in comparison to sauna bathing just once a week.

These recent findings indicate that high corticotropin-releasing factor

(CRF) levels – which can typically be improved with regular physical activity – and frequent sauna sessions can substantially reduce the risk of adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Sauna bathing has also been linked to an improvement in pain and symptoms associated with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and other musculoskeletal disorders, and can improve headache disorders.

So, there you have it – frequent visits to your resort sauna could do your physical health a world of good. Keep in mind,

however, that high temperatures in saunas could be potentially harmful for those with symptomatic and unstable disease conditions, or when combined with alcohol consumption. It’s important to consult with your doctor before adding more sauna visits into your weekly routine.

➜ The Palm Lake Resort Tea Gardens sauna is located by the indoor pool.

NICKY’S TOP FIVE TIPS FOR GOAL SETTING

Having something to look forward to can trigger a surge of dopamine (your reward hormone) and serotonin (the hormone that helps with sleep and relieves pain and bad moods). Many of us use food or alcohol to trigger these hormones but when we feel them in response to setting, projecting and reaching new goals, we feel successful, capable, confident and relaxed.

“When you are goal-oriented, you develop a more resilient emotional version of yourself,” says naturopath, author and speaker Nicky Wise. “But as we move into a slower, less demanding phase of our lives, not having a time-orientated deadline to work to can feel foreign and, for some, downright disorienting.”

The benefits of setting goals in retirement are manifold: it can bring a sense of purpose or connection, prevent regression into despondency, depression and disconnection and keep things interesting and engaging.

“Matching your goals to suit your stage of retirement is important,” Nicky says. “If you are just entering your retirement and still in the working rhythm, you may need to set goals that will keep you busy with moderate time expectations. Alternatively, if you are older, your goals may focus on improving your personal health and wellbeing. Science tells us that our life satisfaction increases when you have a purpose. Setting and achieving your goals will help you find that purpose.”

1. Set SMART goals – ‘Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely’.

2. Write your goals down and display them where you can see them.

3. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t achieve your goal on the first try, or your first attempt doesn’t go to plan – you have time to reset and review, which is vital to goal setting success.

4. Set a goal that involves learning something new or attempting something you’ve never tried before.

5. Write a free form list of all the things you’ve always wanted to do, try, visit, experience, see, listen to, know about and explore – not a bucket list, but rather a ‘lazy Susan’ of what you can still do for the fun and pleasure of it. Use this as a master list to draw your specific goals from.

THEY SAY, A GOAL WITHOUT A PLAN IS SIMPLY A LIST. HERE’S WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO CONTINUE SETTING GOALS, WHATEVER YOUR AGE. SOME FOOD FOR THOUGHT AS WE CELEBRATE THE START OF A BRAND NEW YEAR...

HAVE YOU GOT A GOAL?¡¡

We hope everyone had a good break over Christmas? The resort was very busy, with many of our residents’ family and friends coming to visit which has been great to see. Our resort facilities have definitely been put to good use over the summer festive season!

2020 will see the introduction of many new initiatives for Palm Lake Resort Tea Gardens including new technology for online meal bookings, logging of everyday items like maintenance, visitors, absences etc. Also, from February, Chef Lee will be providing meal services on a lease basis – she will be expanding on our current services by introducing some new ideas like buffet breakfasts, theme nights and even a monthly newsletter, “The Promenade Kitchen Kapers”. Keep an eye out for that one!

I’d like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and all the best for 2020. We are looking forward to spending another busy (and rewarding) year with you, living here in paradise!

Until next time. Stay safe.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE UPDATE¡¡

CHRISTMAS FUNCTIONS The social committee organises several Christmas functions, the first of which was a Christmas dinner dance. We all enjoyed a wonderful meal, there were lots of lucky door prizes, then we danced the night away with music from our own DJ.

Our next function (as this newsletter goes to press) is the Christmas Eve Bike where residents, visitors and particularly visiting children decorate their bikes in true Christmas fashion, then all ride around our Palm Lake Resort grounds. Soon after that, Santa himself pays a visit and goes to every grove to wish everyone a very happy Christmas. It’s a fun night! On Christmas Day itself, residents who would be alone are all invited to join together in the Prom in a BYO everything lunch. We take our own meals, drinks, glasses, cutlery etc, desserts to share if we wish, and spend the time together. No-one needs to feel lonely on this day – or any day. We will finish the year with a New Year’s Eve dance - this year’s theme being the “Roaring Twenties” (after all, we are going into the 2020s!). It’s a BYO nibbles night, the bar will be open, our DJ will be providing the music from both the 1920s and some more of our favourites. We can all watch the Sydney fireworks, at 9pm and midnight, on the big screens!

UPCOMING EVENTS • Australia Day with a beach party theme. We’re having a spit roast BBQ lunch, with lots of Aussie activities and dancing planned for the afternoon. • An Afternoon of Opera is planned for a Sunday afternoon in early March. • A couple of weeks later will be St Patrick’s Day, when we will again be entertained by “String Loaded” - an Irish band that had us all tapping, clapping, singing and laughing when they came last year. • In mid-May, Danny Elliott will again be here to entertain us – this is a performance not to be missed. • At the end of May we celebrate Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea – the big fundraiser for the Cancer Council.
