Welcome to St Martin’s

Exhibitions

Easter this year falls on 1 April. It’s the hinge of the year: for six weeks before it we mark the disciplines ofLent and the intensity of Holy Week: for seven weeks after it we mark the celebration of the resurrection. For St Martin’s, highlights of this season include the Lent study evenings, which this year explore BenQuash’s book Abiding, which draws on fiction, film and art to explore what abiding means for our bodies, minds, relationships, communities, and spiritual lives. Our worship focuses on the services to mark Jesus’Last Supper and crucifixion; this year I shall preach at our Three-Hour Passion service on Good Friday on‘A Cross in the Heart of God.’

A cherished part of our annual musical calendar is the St Martin’s Chamber Music Competition which takesplace in March. This offers all the enjoyment of magnificent performance with the thrill of a prize that couldchange the lives of the winners.

Spring starts early with the opening of the Café in the Courtyard on 26 March. And don’t forget our best-kept secret. Delicious breakfast in the Café in the Crypt each weekday from 8.00am. Whatever you’re doingat St Martin’s – sightseeing, worshiping, shopping or taking a rest – do make the most of the breadth of ourlife by joining a free lunchtime concert, sampling our value-for-money food, or trying out a brass rubbing. We are delighted to welcome you into the heart of this vibrant community.

Spring 2018A Memorial for 30 Enterprising YearsIn the Crypt

St Martin’s is marking the 30th anniversary of ourbusiness operations by erecting a memorial stonefor former vicar Revd Geoffrey Brown. WhenGeoffrey Brown and colleagues established theenterprise at St Martin’s in 1987, they did it in aspirit of ‘Never waste a good crisis.’ They knew St Martin’s needed to take some fairly drastic stepsto secure its ministry, mission and maintenancecosts but that became the pretext for creating anexperiment in hope that sought to discover andmodel what healthy commercial life might look like. What they saw in developing commercialoperations was not just an income stream, but anopportunity to make St Martin’s an example withpolitical and economic significance to add to thesocial and cultural reputation of its homeless andclassical music programmes. This memorial stonewhich will be erected in the spring celebrates thecrucial role of Geoffrey Brown in making possiblethese last 30 enterprising years and we strive tobuild upon on his remarkable legacy.

This publication was produced to ISO 14001-2004Environmental Management Standards and 95% of thewaste created during the process is recycled. The materialused includes vegetable oil inks, elemental chlorine-freepulp and fibre from FSC® certified forests.

The three great days, beginning on the evening ofMaundy Thursday, and stretching across GoodFriday, Holy Saturday and Easter Day, are the hubof the Christian year. We see the worst of humanityin Judas’ betrayal of Jesus, Peter’s denial and thechief priests’ conniving. But we see the very best ofGod, in Jesus’ selfless, longsuffering, limitless love.We come back over and again to these three daysbecause they show us the truth about ourselvesand about God, and the joy of forgiveness andeternal life. They are the centre not just of faith –but of everything. We walk together through Holy Week, keepingJesus’ company in his controversies in Jerusalemand in his Last Supper, arrest and trial. We recallhis washing of the disciples’ feet, his lonely walk tothe cross and agonising death. We stay quiet toponder his time in the tomb. And then at dawn onEaster morning, and again later that day, weexplode with effervescent exaltation at the wonderof his resurrection. It takes 50 days to realise the significance of whathas happened. The Easter season is the springtimeof the year, and the period of hope, delight, andcelebration. Now is eternal life, if risen with Christwe stand.

Lent, Holy Week and Easter

For this year’s Lent Course we will be using BenQuash’s book Abiding as a resource for our study, prayer and reflection. Ben Quash is Professor ofChristianity and the Arts at Kings College London. His book Abiding was chosen by Rowan Williamsas the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Lent Book in2013. Ben Quash will be joining us for one of thesesessions to introduce his theme and to answer our questions.‘Abiding’ is not a word we use much in ordinaryconversation. But it is also difficult to find a goodsubstitute. It means staying with, it impliescommitment, solidarity, presence and

perseverance. Drawing on the wisdom and imageryof modern fiction, art and film, as well as keyfigures in the classical Christian and spiritualtradition, Quash skilfully and creatively exploresthe implications that ‘abiding in God’s love’ has forour bodies, our minds, our relationships andcommunities, our own spiritual lives, and ourworld. Rowan Williams writes ‘Ben Quash hassucceeded in holding together the uneasy and oftenbewildering plurality of the modern heart or mindwith the depths of the tradition he inherits, both theAnglican inheritance and the wider legacy of earlyand medieval Christian thought and prayer’. It is abook which will lead to deep reflection about howwe embody those traditions within our own faithand search for a deeper sense of our owncentredness in God’s love. This wise and valuablebook will form the basis of our study. Our Lent Study will begin on Wednesday 21February, join us at 6.30pm in church for theinformal Eucharist, followed by a simple Lentensupper and then our study groups. The cost of the course is £15 which includes a copy of Ben Quash’s book (or £8 if you already havethe book). The Lent Study takes place from 6.30-8.45pm onWednesdays 21, 28 February, 7, 14, 21, 28 March 2018.Download an application form from our websitewww.smitf.org or pick up a form in church.Further information is available from Revd RichardCarter. All are welcome.
