RABBI'S MESSAGE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Congregants, On behalf of the Exectuive Board, I would like to wish everyone a joyous Tu B’Shvat filled with health and happiness. Let me start by giving thanks and Hodaah to Hashem for the way our Shul and community escaped the horrors of Hurricane Sandy, coming out almost unscathed. I would like to thank all of our members who gave a helping hand in the difficult times. Your good deeds are greatly appreciated. This past year, we have had the pleasure of hosting Rabbi Dov Pianko, from Yeshiva University who is spending his internship year with us at Young Israel of New Hyde Park. He has been a very active part of our Shul and particularly with our young college crowd; he has led many successful nights of learning with food and fun. May he and we enjoy continued success in all of our endeavors. On another front, as we speak, we are in process of accumulating the rain water for our most prized project, The Mikvah Yisrael of New Hyde Park. The construction has been completed. It is truly a beautiful Mikvah, and with the help of Hashem, we hope to announce the Chanukat Habayit very soon. As far as our elevator project, we needed to have the architect amend the plans, to comply with the city’s regulations. This has also been completed. We are now hoping to move on to the next phase of this amazing project. I would like to take this opportunity to give my thanks and appreciation for your continued support. It gives me a great Nachas to see how united we are in everything we do for our Shul and the community. As always, I look forward to seeing you all in our Shul and at our future events. David Rouhani President

On a recent morning commute to my “day job”, I saw a bumper sticker with this statement attributed to Indian nationalist leader Mahatma Gandhi:

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

Applying a kal va-chomer (a fortiori) argument, one may conclude that even further grandeur can be discerned from a society’s consideration of the plant kingdom. In that regard, this month – on the Fifteenth of Shevat – we will celebrate Tu Bishvat, a “birthday” for the trees; plants and vegetables, for their part, mark their own “New Year” on the First of Tishrei that coincides with when we humans observe Rosh Hashana. A blessing is recited upon simply seeing flowering trees in the spring, not to mention partaking of their fruit or enjoying their fragrance, and wanton destruction of trees is strictly prohibited. Each Shabbat, the land gets a day off and is not to be worked, and at least in Israel, is entitled to a year-long Sabbatical vacation every seven years, with a bonus “Jubilee” holiday every fifty. Each species of vegetation gets its own space – no need to share “rooms” – lest one violate the prohibition of Kilayim. “Children” are a carefully protected class, with fruit being off-limits (Orlah) for the first three years of the tree. Yet perhaps even more significant than this pattern of respectful treatment is the high esteem with which trees are regarded, serving as a metaphor for both humanity and Torah: “ki ha-adam etz ha-sadeh - man is the tree of the field” (Deut. 20:19) and “etz chayim hi la-machazikim bah – [the Torah] is a tree of life for those who grasp it” (Proverbs 3:18). The common denominator is the model for sustained growth, an inspiration for aspiration.

RABBI'S MESSAGE (continued):

The few months since our last newsletter have been trying times, the devastation of a natural double-disaster – “Hurricane Sandy” followed shortly by a freak fall snowstorm – and then, among other outbursts of violence nationally, the horrific massacre at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Our ongoing response must be one of prayer for the victims of these tragedies and their families, and wherever possible to lend a helping hand of physical, financial, or moral support – the so-called protective “shade” offered by a tree. At the same, we must be resilient, continue to build upward, strengthening our roots but also our outward reach.

Chag la-Ilanot ve-Lanu Same’ach, Lawrence Teitelman

To donate new or gently-used clothes, women’s hats, or plastic or wooden hangers to benefit needy families in Queens and Nassau Counties, please contact please contact Clothing Gemach Coordinator Mark Krieger at 917-703-4694.

Food certificates are a wonderful and simple way to help raise funds for the shul's capital improvements. Each member family has an annual obligation to purchase certificates in the following amounts: Single: $600 Family: $1,200 Single Senior: $500 Couple Senior: $1,000 Those who don't meet their obligation will be charged 5% of that amount. Gift cards are available for our area's three major supermarkets, Pathmark, Waldbaum’s, and Stop & Shop. We also have Mazur’s and A & A Gourmet. Lastly there are Chessed Dollars that are accepted by many kosher establishments. They can be purchased from: Ilene Horowitz 718-470-9474, Paige Finkelstein 718-343-4821, Art Feldman 516-227-0707, Rena Gombo 718-343-3855, or the shul office. Everybody shops (and eats) so there really is little excuse but to participate in the program, not just to fulfill your obligation, but to make it a habit year round.
