Active Parenting Graduates
Tis the season for celebration, and ERYC would like to celebrate themost recent grads of our 6-week Active Parenting program. Theseparents have taken the initiative to learn how to raise children who are
cooperative, responsible and able to resist peer pressure. They can nowutilize their new skills at home by changing their parenting styles orcommunication approaches. "The Active Parenting class provided real-life home situations. The adults in the class could relate to each other andstrategize for improving their parenting styles," says one graduate. Active Parenting combines entertaining video and engaging discussionaround real-life struggles and guides parents in dealing with sensitiveissues such as drugs, sexuality and bullying. community," says Michelle Hartel, executive director of ERYC. "A needwas recognized for additional support for parents with children in thesesometimes challenging age groups. ERYC responded by trainingcommunity leaders for this evidence-based curriculum so that we couldwork collaboratively with community partners to increase opportunitiesfor skill-building and dialogue around pressing parenting areas."
While Active Parenting implements quality evidence-based curriculum, the instructors are what really makes the the program engaging andmemorable. ERYC would like to recognize the continued expertise and
professionalism of instructors Julia Kozusko, Ana Mendoza and MariaElizalde. The graduates acknowledged the quality instruction by sayingthat the instructors made the classes "fun and stimulating" and that their"wealth of experience is evident," even sharing personal stories toengage the class. For some graduates, this has been one of the bestclasses they've attended as adults and summarize Active Parenting ashaving a "safe, respectful feel to it with strong leadership" and would"recommend it to my friends and others in the community."

Youth Leader Spotlight:Oliver Pilas
Going about the daily grind and preoccupying ourselves with theoccasional powder day, we often are oblivious to people who aredonating their time trying to make a difference in the community, notasking for anything in return for their service. For many of us, it takesyears to see firsthand the power of volunteering and subsequently beinginspired to give back. Rarely do we see people at such a young agerealize the power of leadership and the importance of giving back totheir community. Oliver Pilas is one of rare kind, who does see theimportant things in life at such a young age. Once Oliver was exposed to

SOS OutreachInspiring Youth to Make Positive Decisions for Healthy and Successful Lives
As SOS Outreach launches winter programs this season, the organization is proud to celebrate20 years of serving youth in Eagle County! Founded in 1993, SOS has served over 36,000 youththroughout the past 20 years, introducing participants to snowsports as well as the core values ofcourage, discipline, integrity, wisdom, compassion and humility.
During the upcoming season, SOS will serve 600 participants in Eagle County, 250 of them inthe long-term, year-round University curriculum. Eagle also has 38 adult mentors, or 'Sherpas,'who will lead students through the curriculum, encouraging goal setting, modeling the core valuesand having fun in the snow!
The SOS curriculum builds self-esteem and life skills through leadership workshops, community service pr
value training, mentorship, and ride days. Each activity day is paired with one of SOS's core values, empowemake concrete connections between the core value and the day's sport. In conjunction with the 20th Anniversary, SOS is launching a new high-intensity leadership development cterm participants. SOS also officially added humility to the core values students learn on the hill. While the orexcited by all the new programs and curriculum developments, the real excitement is due to the impacts SOS
participants. One long-term Eagle County participant explained the positive effect the curriculum has had in SOS and the support that I received, I don't doubt I would have g one down the wrong path sooner or later. Recent Findings
Mentoring Roles and Styles
Recent mentoring research has shown that
the quality of the mentoring relationship has
been linked with youth outcomes (Goldner &
Mayseless, 2009). Questions remain,
however, about which types of relationships
and interactions constitute the most
effective mentoring thus, Thomas Keller and
Julia Price designed an exploratory study to
investigate such questions
This study tracked 26 new BBBSA
relationships among three public elementary
schools in low-income urban areas. Students
with social, emotional, behavioral, or family
problems were matched one-to-one with a
volunteer mentor from local businesses or
organizations. Multi-method assessments
(interview and questionnaire) were conducted
at various time points youth were asked to
report on their own symptoms and behaviors,as well as their relationship and satisfaction
with their mentor. Extensive on-site
observations, from multiple reporters, during
the weekly mentor-student meetings were
used to characterize the type of relationship
between each match. Four interaction styles
were observed:

Teaching Assistant/Tutoring: focus
on schoolwork and other academic
tasks
Friend/Engaging: game-playing and
conversation competitive playfulness
Sage/Counseling: verbal sharing,
advice, warmth, and caring more
formal than "friend"
Acquaintance/Floundering: difficulty
and awkwardness
Students matched with a sage mentor
reported the most positive experiences,
"these students felt closer to and more
secure with their mentors, had more positive
feelings during interactions, received greater
support, and experienced less
disappointment in their relationships." The
superiority of the sage relationships
compared to the teaching and friend-type
relationships leads Keller and Pryce to
suggest that the sage/counseling type may
represent the "ideal of a positive
mentoring relationship."
