The First Fund Campaign wasreintroduced at the end of 2009. First Fundis a fund-raising effort developed by our NBS-AERho leadership to provide an avenue offunding for NBS-AERhos nancial growth tostrengthen our organization and expand ourservices to the students and professionals weserve.

We are well into our new scal and academicyear for NBS-AERho and the First FundCampaign (FFC) is still in its infancy stage. We must give strong emphasis to the campaignat all levels (national, regional, local chapter, individual member) in order to meet thegoals that were set forth for the campaign latelast fall. These goals are: Phase One-100%National Leadership Participation; Phase

Two-100% Chapter Participation / 100%Membership Participation; Phase Three-Contributions from outside sources. As reported earlier, we have reached ourrst goal of 100% National LeadershipParticipation. Each of the National Ofcers, the Executive Director & his ofce staff, and

all members of the National Advisory Councilhave made a personal nancial contributionto the campaign. Phase One is complete! Thisis a great start, and a strong message in theirbelief in, and support of, NBS-AERho and theFFC.

The next phase (two) of our goals is a

combined phase: 100% chapter/100% memberparticipation! As explained in the Novemberedition of Signals Online, each local chapteris asked to raise funds for the campaign tosend to the National Ofce. At the sametime, each member of NBS-AERho is askedto contribute in some nancial way to thelocal chapters fund-raising efforts. This isthe most logical way for each chapter andmember to contribute at the same time.Weare already beginning to receive funds towardthe campaign from local chapters. This is awonderful start! Other chapters are beginningto work on their fund-raising efforts for thecampaign as well. Once we are well into phasetwo of our campaign, we can begin focusingon phase three: contributions from outsidethe organization. As was explained to theChapter Advisors and Presidents in a letterthey received last November, NBS-AERho hasa better opportunity to ask for, and receive,

funding from outside sources (foundations, etc.) when we are able to show these otherorganizations/agencies the enthusiasm andnancial commitment our own members havefor our society on all levels.

No matter when the cycle starts for Modelchapter, it is a challenge to combine academiccalendars with the regular calendar. Weare half way through the school year, but itis January and its a NEW YEAR! So, rst,Happy New Year. I mean that. It is time to getoff to a NEW start, and time to check out therequirements for model chapter and start thatchart!

The next time your exec board meets, log onthe NBS website and review the criteria formodel chapter. Its in the CHAPTER section,(http://www.nbs-aerho.org/documents/ModelChapterProgram-2009.pdf) REALLYdo this. I mean itI am not just blowingsmoke here. Get everyone gathered aroundthe monitor and survey the list of items on thelist. As you look it over, youll realize that you

probably already do a lot of those things. Youdo have members entering contests, and youget your membership dues in on time, and youhave professional speakers at your meetings. And, you could be doing many of the othermodel chapter point-getters very easily.

Maybe its time to spice up chapter meetings, reach out to a neighboring chapter, encourageadditional Signals articles, or help a chapterreactivate! You probably didnt think aboutdoing that, but hey, why not? It would be a

great time to contact a media group and explainthat youre working toward a special chapteraward and you need their help. You can makea few small changes that will result in VERY bigresults.

Before you know it, youll realize that MANYof these items are already completed. You canbegin talking about who among your groupcan take a leadership role for additional model

chapter categories. And you can expand thatcircle to involve more members as you worktoward that goal. The very famous Alabamafootball coach, Bear Bryant said Its not thewill to win, but the will to prepare to win thatmakes the difference. This is one of thosemoments to exercise your leadership and show

your initiative. Its January. The Dallas convention is still a

couple months away. Its a great time to showsome initiative toward model chapter. By thetime you arrive at the convention, youll bewell on your way, and when you return fromthe convention, youll have a whole new set ofideas for chapter development, and a renewedsense of commitment to making your chapterstronger. And come December, as you areputting the nishing touches on an incredibleproductive year, youll realize that at the nextnational convention your chapter is goingto receive that incredibly prestigious ModelChapter award! You will join an elite group. And youll be able to tell a prospective employerabout this incredible leadership campaign youspearheaded, and the very exciting results. So dont wait. The time to start that modelchapter campaign is NOW!

Hello all! In 6 weeks we will be in Dallas forour National Convention! I was able to checkout some of the amenities the city has to offerduring our mid-winter conference in Dallas. Ifyou like horses, Dallas has ranches where youcan go horseback riding or you can enjoy watersports at beautiful Lake Arlington. Downtownis peppered with museums and serves asthe home for the the art district. Dallas has

a diverse night life as well. Venues providemusic ranging from country/western, salsan merengue to smooth jazz. I spoke with ayoung man from Dallas on the plane ride homeand he recommends some night spots calledPurgatory or Lizard Lounge. He highlyrecommends a club in Fort Worth called BillyBobs. He says theres a bull riding pen in theclub. Did I mention that the bull is live? Healso told me that celebrities frequent the club.

I noted that there are an exciting varietyof restaurants near our hotel. If you likeexperiencing different types of food, youcan sample authentic Mexican dishes, goodold-fashioned Southern cuisine, Thai food, whatever you can imagine. My plane buddyalso recommends the following steak eateries:Salt Grass Steakhouse and Texas LandingCattle. Google/bing them.

Theres so much to do, so get your planstogether now. You owe it to yourself to come

and participate in a wonderful conventionlled with outstanding speakers and softwaredemo sessions. Nows the time. Decidewhat life-experience you want to have. Ill belooking for you in March!

SAC Mixerby Gina GrossoNational VP for StudentServices

Dallas is right around the corner, and thereare so many things to get ready for! One isthe Student Advisory Council mixer. Everyyear the SAC hosts a mixer at the start of theconvention giving NBS members the chanceto mingle and get to know one another. Andwhat better way is there to get to know oneanother than a night of dancing and fun?We are currently in the works of nding aDJ to bring to Dallas with us, so you know itis going to be good. Also, if any one has anyideas for themes or already has song requestslined up please email me with them [email protected] or even better; post themon the Facebook wall! You can nd the groupby searching for the The Ofcial NationalBroadcasting Society in Facebooks searchengine.

Now I know this year has been a little slow

for the SAC, and were looking to changethat for next year. We will also be hostinga series of SAC meetings to get every oneexcited about the upcoming year. During thetime of the convention we will also be takingapplications for any NBS Member interestedin becoming a part of the SAC.

I cant wait for Dallas. Rider Universityschapter is almost all set to board the plane. All they need to do is pack, and wait forthe date, which reminds me. When youre

packing remember not to bring solelybusiness clothes because they may be a littleuncomfortable to dance in at the mixer. Illsee you at the DJ booth NBS!

Please take note of the headline. This the thedate your application for Alpha Epsilon Rhomust be in the National Ofce for you to receiveyour pin, certicate and honor cords at theconvention.

At last years convention and again atthe beginning of this school year, I tried to

encourage you to set your sights for the yearon this date. It would be the length of timeyou had to achieve the necessary grades andacademic recognition for qualication toAERho membership. I am hoping many of youdid, because it will be my pleasure to hear yourname called as a new inductee, at this yearsconvention in Dallas.

If you are not quite ready or have not metall the requirements for membership, dontget discouraged. Sometimes it takes a bit to

As the modern world continues to developand change, so does technology. The constantintroduction of new fangled electronics andInternet programs require those of us in theMass Communications community to be eagerto learn.

As new technologies are developed andimproved, the different forms of media arerequired to grow and change along side them.

Those with careers in communications mustlearn to transmit their messages throughmultiple media outlets.

Corporations and businesses are no longerlooking to hire someone who can simply write,or operate a camera, but rather a personwho has knowledge in television, radio, camera operating, writing and the Web. Newtechnologies are allowing professionals in theeld to shoot their own stories, edit them, writethem, and afterwards- stream them online.

As technologies become more advanced, students eager to enter the communicationsjob market must understand that businessesarent looking for journalists or reporters, butmore importantly, a multimedia specialist. In the current job market you can trulyset yourself apart from others by havingknowledge and skills in the many areas of masscommunication.

Through school and educationalorganizations, current students have endlessopportunities to expand their knowledge andportfolio for their future and professionalcareers. Its important to take advantage of asmany learning experiences as possible in orderto become the most marketable candidate for aposition. Experience and practice throughout

the course of college, add depth to skill sets forfuture professionals. The more you can offeran employer, the more an employer may offeryou.

We may not be the biggest chapter, or evenbe the most organized. But one thing thatthe Millersville chapter does have is a lot ofmotivation. As you all are well aware, thenational NBS convention is being held inDallas, Texas. Not exactly a hop, skip anda jump from our campus. However, our

members have recognized the conventionin Dallas as an opportunity to gain valuableexperience for our futures in broadcasting.

Keeping this in mind, we have been workingvery hard to fundraise, fundraise, fundraise! This past semester, we continued with someprevious activities, revamped old ideas andcreated new ones.

We were fortunate enough to work onceagain with our local pizza shop to aid in ourfundraising efforts. We worked weekends

delivering pizzas to on-campus students andto families throughout the community. Itwasnt always easy. Some of us were askedto work late into the morning, while otherswere forced to battle their way throughfreak snowstorms. In the end though, thoseweekends were successful and we look forwardto participating again in the future months.

One of our largest fundraisers to date wasa new idea called Dollar Dog Night. The ideawas based off of a similar activity held at alocal stadium where hot dogs were sold tocollege students for only $1. We, too, sold hotdogs for $1 at our fundraiser, but also offeredMillersville students a chance to watch ourarea baseball team, the Philadelphia Phillies,on a movie screen on our campus quad duringthe MLB playoffs. The fundraiser was asuccess, despite inclement weather moving theactivity inside our student memorial center.

It was so successful that we held anotherDollar Dog Night only several weeks later.

All the hard work invested in the pastsemester has paid off. Over the course of onlyfour months, we have raised more money forour organization than the past three yearscombined. We hope to continue this record

in the coming months. And our biggestfundraiser of the year, Miss Millersville, is stillto come.

Miss Millersville is an event meant toshowcase organizations on campus by havingone female represent her organization in arelaxed, Miss America-style of competition. The girls are asked to showcase their talentsand their most creative beachwear, forexample, while three professional judges rate

each category. However, Miss Millersville isabout much more than a friendly competition.Miss Millersville has always done well topromote our organization as well as raisemoney and awareness for other organizationson campus. In fact, the top three winners ofthe event are given a percentage of the totalprize money for their organization.

Our school motto here at Millersville is seizethe opportunity. Our desire to become futurebroadcasters, whether in front or behind the

scenes, is what has motivated the MillersvilleChapter to seize the opportunity Dallas haspresented us. Sure, conditions along the wayhavent always been ideal, but in the end, theexperiences we will gain in Dallas are going tobe worth far more than any amount we couldever make in fundraising. They are priceless.

In only a few weeks, well be gathering for thenational convention in Dallas. Theres probablyno other single experience that has as much ofan impact on the members of an NBS-Aerhochapter as taking part in a national convention. If your chapter hasnt yet made plans to senda delegation to Dallas, theres still time to takeadvantage of the regular registration rate. Thatrate is good through February 12 after that,

itll cost at least $50.00 more. February 12 isalso the deadline for hotel reservations, so makesure your delegation is registered and has hotelaccommodations by then.

If your chapter isnt able to send anyone to theconvention this year, its important to have yourchapter represented by a proxy at the businessmeetings. Send a request to the NBS-AERhonational ofce by February 28.

There are a couple of other deadlines to keepin mind. February 10 is the day your chapters

Annual Report is due. Along with being animportant convention deadline, February 12 isalso the day when several submissions are due Society Award nominations, the CommunityService Report, and reports to apply for theModel Chapter Award and the new MotivatedChapter Award. Make sure that your chaptergets full recognition at the convention foryour activities. The new Motivated Chapterdesignation specically targets chapter activitiesfrom the fall semester through the submissiondeadline, so its a great way to show how activeyour chapter has been since the start of theschool year. Check the Chapter Materials andConventions links on the NBS-AERho Web sitefor all the details. Ill see you in Dallas!

The fall semester of 2009 begins and I had noidea what to expect. I was a freshman cominginto Rider University for my rst semester. Iwalked into the studio shortly after arrivingand I dont think I have left for more than anhour since. In one semester I have learnedmore than ever before, and have also sharedmuch knowledge I already knew with otherstudents.

The staff and students of the Rider UniversityNetwork and NBS chapter made my rstsemester exciting and rewarding. Barely aweek after stepping foot into the studio I wasextremely involved with Riders News Show, and in even less time it took for me to getinvolved I was co producing. But No, the fundidnt stop there. I was helping with The RiderSports Report and many other TV venturesfrom documentaries to important interviews.

My mom always told me to get involved early

and it will make all the difference, she wasright! Working in television is my dream andI realized the Rider University Network andNBS is my rst step to making that happen. Iput in hours of time in order to put togetherjust about six submissions for Dallas, and inthe process have worked with some fantastic

people. When I came back for my second semester

of college, I didnt say I was going back tocollege, I said I was going back home. In lessthan a semester the Rider University TV studiohas really become my home away from home. There have been times where I have spent allday and all night working there, yet I dontthink I would have it any other way.

This rst year has been amazing thus farand I cant wait to see what is to come. Everychapter should welcome each student withopen arms like Rider University did for mebecause large contributions can come fromanywhere. I cant wait until Dallas, it is trulyand honor and a great experience to be goingas only a freshman, and that is thanks to thestaff and students of The Rider University.

Region 1by Ray EatonRegion 2 DirectorDuring the NEB/NAC/Regional Directors

meeting in January, we toured the hotel.Everyone in our group was excited andcannot wait for you to experience it. Whenyou rst walk into the spacious lobby, youdont have to be smart to know this is notyour average Holiday Inn. There is even

a full-service Starbucks in the lobby! TheMalachite Ballroom, the location for theaward show, is a three-level auditorium. Itwill provide a great view for all to witnessthe ceremonies on Saturday evening. Manyof the breakout rooms for our sessions wererecently remodeled and refurbished. Thelarge open-air glass enclosed area for ourkick-off session on Wednesday will amazeyou. And the guest rooms are not tooshabby either!

I have been to many nationalconventions lately and I can truly say theseaccommodations are among the best. Butdont just take my word for it. Go to thehotels website at www.intercontinental.com and check it out. Oh, did I mentionthere was a Starbucks? Make yourreservations and pack your bags. See youDallas!

The Region 3 Production Competition wasa success, and it was online. For the rst timein NBS history, the competition moved to theInternet. Entries were uploaded to YouTube, links emailed, and scored online by industrypros in the Southeast. Students liked theconvenience of YouTube, judges liked being

able to watch online (everyone understoodthat YouTube isnt Broadcast Quality butthat didnt seem to be a problem), and I likedeverything about being online except forYouTube changing their privacy settings afterthe entry sheets went out. Thanks, YouTube!

Other than that little glitch, it was modernand hip. If youd like to view the winningentries, please go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDQIV0Y8OGw and look underthe Favorites column.
