ST. JOSEPH MESSENGER A Blessed New Year to all! In this first month of 2019, we are striving hard to adjust to the change in the weather - get out those long johns. Some are diligently fulfilling their New Year’s resolutions made in good faith to eat less and exercise more, to be more attentive to our spouse and to begin to be more charitable in thought and word. Making a resolution is a good thing, but to keep a resolution is better. While most of us have fallen back into the routine of everyday life, our resolutions have already flown out the window. It might be a good thing to think about some resolutions in faith for the New Year. We believe that God’s grace will be revealed in the coming year ahead, just as God’s grace was experienced in the years past. We can resolve to read the entire Gospel of Luke which would help us understand Jesus as savior. The New Year means that we will journey closer to our heavenly home just as many of our family and friends went to rest in the hope of rising again. We can decide to remember in prayer our grandparents and parents who shared their faith with us and thank God for those faith-filled people in our lives. We can decide to share our faith with our children and grandchildren. The New Year promises each of us the presence of Christ to carry the cross daily and gives us hope for God’s blessings. We might resolve to work more diligently for our favorite charity such as volunteering at the hospital or visiting friends at the nursing home or the homebound. The New Year means that we should strive to be more faithful and more devoted to Christ. We could volunteer for activities or ministries in the parish without waiting to be asked by the pastor. We should grow in our desire to be holy and to help others in their quest to be holy as well. The New Year is an opportunity to detach from the things of this world and attach ourselves to the things of Heaven. We can make a resolution to clear out the closets and give items to the poor and needy. All the resolutions we make help us to look to the coming of the Kingdom with joy and hope. So today let us look forward with joy to the coming of the New Year. Let us be resolved to make the presence of Christ known especially to the poor, to the broken-hearted and to all who need to hear the Good News. It is our faith in Christ and the power of his cross and resurrection that has changed the world, and we, members of His holy Church, have a responsibility to claim the New Year of 2019 for Christ. “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily and follow me.” Luke 9:23 May God’s richness be yours in the New Year. ST. JOSEPH MESSENGER

A Blessed New Year to all! In this first month of 2019, we are striving hard to adjust to the change in the

weather - get out those long johns. Some are diligently fulfilling their New Year’s resolutions made in good faith to

eat less and exercise more, to be more attentive to our spouse and to begin to be more charitable in thought and

word. Making a resolution is a good thing, but to keep a resolution is better. While most of us have fallen back into

the routine of everyday life, our resolutions have already flown out the window.

It might be a good thing to think about some resolutions in faith for the New Year. We believe that God’s

grace will be revealed in the coming year ahead, just as God’s grace was experienced in the years past. We can

resolve to read the entire Gospel of Luke which would help us understand Jesus as savior. The New Year means

that we will journey closer to our heavenly home just as many of our family and friends went to rest in the hope

of rising again. We can decide to remember in prayer our grandparents and parents who shared their faith with

us and thank God for those faith-filled people in our lives. We can decide to share our faith with our children and

grandchildren. The New Year promises each of us the presence of Christ to carry the cross daily and gives us hope

for God’s blessings. We might resolve to work more diligently for our favorite charity such as volunteering at the

hospital or visiting friends at the nursing home or the homebound. The New Year means that we should strive to be

more faithful and more devoted to Christ. We could volunteer for activities or ministries in the parish without

waiting to be asked by the pastor. We should grow in our desire to be holy and to help others in their quest to be

holy as well. The New Year is an opportunity to detach from the things of this world and attach ourselves to the

things of Heaven. We can make a resolution to clear out the closets and give items to the poor and needy. All the

resolutions we make help us to look to the coming of the Kingdom with joy and hope.

So today let us look forward with joy to the coming of the New Year. Let us be resolved to make the

presence of Christ known especially to the poor, to the broken-hearted and to all who need to hear the Good News.

It is our faith in Christ and the power of his cross and resurrection that has changed the world, and we, members of

His holy Church, have a responsibility to claim the New Year of 2019 for Christ. “If anyone wishes to come after

me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily and follow me.” Luke 9:23

May God’s richness be yours in the New Year.

Bottle and Can Collection

There is a bottle and can collection site behind the

church. The Youth Ministry uses the funds from

recycling these containers for various activities.

Thanks for placing your “returnables” in the

appropriate space.

Mass Remembrance

A special way to remember a family member or a

friend who has passed away would be to have a

Mass offered in their memory. If you wish to have

the Mass offered on a birthday, anniversary or any

special date, we will do our best to have the Mass

offered on that specific date. Please contact the

office with your request. The suggested donation

for each Mass is $5.00.

Food Pantry Weekend

Please bring your food items on the first weekend of

each month. This month it is January 5/6.

Or you may leave a cash donation, as they can purchase

food and items with this. THANK YOU!

Meal Ministry for the Catholic Charities Emergency Family Shelter

Every third Friday, our parish works together to donate a meal to this family homeless shelter in Des Moines.

Look for a flocknote email with sign-up information the week before.

If you have any questions please email, call/text Robin Cox at [email protected] or 515-229-6463.

Please take your turn during the year to help provide the meal. THANK YOU!

The Knights of Columbus had two check presentations this month.

The funds from our Tootsie Roll Drive were donated to GENESIS

and The Madison County Association for Special People.

The women of St. Patrick's Irish Settlement invited the women of St. Joseph to an Advent by candlelight event,

"Let there be Light,” on December 2, 2018. It was a night to begin the celebration of Advent together with

Christ’s love through fellowship, entertainment and a great meal!

Painting for CRISP

Members of St. Joseph parish participated in the fundraiser for CRISP.
