PASTOR’S PEN

A New Day is Dawning

2018. If you are signing and dating an-ything, 2018, as of right now, probably isn’t rolling off of your pen. For some the date takes a while to “stick”. It’s awkward and un-comfortable, at least at the beginning. It’s been second nature for close to a year to write 2017; but that year is gone. The calen-

dar has flipped. The past is the past.

The new year starts abruptly, but our lives usually don’t. We still look, sound, and perhaps smell the same on January 1, 2018 as we did on December 31, 2017. We may even be inclined to live like we have this past year. Why change?

And yet, something has. The transition from the former to the new is not often quick and painless, nor does it only happen on the calendar. Paul writes that we are, in Jesus, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires and to be re-newed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness (Ephesians 4:22-24).

By the time we hit February, 2018 will

be ingrained in your DNA. Your hand will au-tomatically move with a knowledge all its own. In some ways, perhaps your life too moves automatically in light of the forgiveness of Je-sus. However, our hands remember the new date much faster than our hearts and minds forget our former sinful ways. It is a daily putting on and taking off, much like the mental exercise of writing 2018

will be for the next few days or weeks. God has already forgiven your former sins, your former manner of living through deceitful de-sires, and placed His Spirit within you. He is making all things new in you (Revelation 21:5). The New Year brings new moments to live in His likeness. Off in the distance, if God so wills it, awaits 2019. The hearts of believers, however, await something far greater than another calendar change; we await the day, He will wipe away every tear form their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away in the new heaven and the new earth (Revelation 21:4). God’s blessings to you as you put on the new!

DCO CORNER

I invite you to come to the next new

member class! We will use the Bible

study book: I Have Good News for

You.

Some of the questions discussed in

this course are:

➢How can we know there is a God?

➢What did Christ really accomplish?

➢How can you know for sure whether you are con-

verted?

➢Will you stay in your Christian faith?

➢Can anyone be saved without being baptized?

➢Who should not eat and drink at the Lord’s Table?

➢What will heaven be like?

If you are considering membership here at

Trinity and you have not been confirmed in the

Lutheran Church this is the “Adult Confirmation

Class” required for membership. Members are also

invited to take the class as a confirmation refresher.

If you are transferring here from another

Lutheran Church I encourage you to take the class

because Bible study is always an opportunity to

learn and it helps me to get to know you so that I

may assist you in becoming an active member.

For those that finish this nine-week class and want

to pursue membership here at Trinity there is three-

week Spiritual Gift discovery process and then a

new member reception on Sunday April 22nd,

2018.

The first class is Sunday, January 21st at 9:15am in

the Large classroom. If you have children between

the ages of 3 years to 4th Grade they can be in their

Sunday School class at the same time. Also, if you

have need for the nursey from younger children it

too will be available.

Thirty nine years ago I was invited to a new mem-

ber class just like this one. When I look back on

that class I can honestly say it was a pivotal point in

my spiritual life. God continues to work through

the message of forgiveness of sins in Christ today.

I look forward to this class and my prayer is that

you will take the opportunity to join me. There is

no cost or pre-registration necessary, just come on

Sunday, January 21st. The coffee pot will be on

and I hope to see you in class.

DCO Craig Cooper

Life Quote: “So celebrate that divine-human Gift who has so changed your life by His Spirit. Praise Him for His gracious forgiveness

and righteousness. Praise Him as the One who will one day transform the mortal into

immortality. Indeed, He who was once a baby has changed and is changing lives and will one day change His whole crea-

tion.” Rev. David Fuerstenau, Holy Truth Lutheran Church, Ketchikan, Alaska

The Sewing Guild will not meet in

January, but join us in February!

Church Of The Week

Homeless Ministry Hosted by Trinity

Feb. 12 – Feb. 18, 2018

This annual community outreach provides overnight shelter and meals for the homeless. In addition to providing overnight shelter in our Fellowship Hall for 25-35 people each night, we will be preparing and serving a community meal for 100 people at Place of Hope every night at 5:00pm. Many volunteers are needed; to drive the bus, prepare & serve meals and snacks. Some of the meals are prepared by groups but individuals are also needed. Host/hostesses are need-ed to serve 5 hour shifts for overnight supervision/security. This is a labor of love as our “Social Minis-try” fund will be used to purchase all the food. If you would like to donate to that fund, checks can be made payable to “Trinity Lutheran Church” and in the memo please note: “Social Ministry.” On January 21st we will receive a door offering after both services for Church of the Week. “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me some-thing to drink, I was a stranger and you invit-ed me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ - Matthew 25:35-36 Sign up on the poster in the narthex. See the Church of the Week Job Descriptions hand-outs for all the details and contact Craig Cooper, 252-3670, with any questions.

Music and Worship Notes

Yesterday (December 20) was our last day of school for 2017 at Prince of Peace. Even though

school is out for Christmas break, I will leave my Christmas tree up and decorated until after

the students return the first week in January. When the students come to music class those first

few days back, many of them will ask me why I still have my tree up and why my room is still

decorated for Christmas. My answer is the same every year. "It's still Christmas" I tell them.

The students' response is usually something like "Christmas is over," to which I reply, "there

are 12 days of Christmas so it really doesn't end until January 5th." Then I remind them of the

song with the same name and that gives me the opportunity to tell the students how the song

came to be . . .

The History of the 12 Days of Christmas

What do leaping lords, French hens, swimming swans and a partridge in a pear tree have to

do with Christmas? Well, from 1558-1829, Roman Catholics in England weren't permitted to

practice their faith openly. During that era, someone wrote this carol as a catechism song for

young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning

known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a reli-

gious reality which the children could remember.

~ The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.

~ Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.

~ Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.

~ The four calling birds were the four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

~ The five golden rings were the Law: the first five books of the Old Testament.

~ The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.

~ The seven swans a-swimming represented the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: prophecy,

serving, teaching, encouragement, contribution, leadership and mercy.

~ The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.

~ Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,

goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

~ The ten lords a-leaping were the ten commandments.

~ The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.

~ The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostle's

Creed.

May God grant you peace and happiness through-

out the rest of the 12 days of Christmas and into

Epiphany!

Come Lord Jesus! Dear Friends and Family of Lutheran Island Camp and

Christ Serve Ranch,

Come Lord Jesus! It is a prayer that many of us experi-

enced as the first prayer that we learned. In many hous-

es, it is prayed more often than the Lord’s Prayer. Most

of us automatically start each meal with the words

“Come Lord Jesus.” After all, for most of us it is “The

Common Table Prayer”.

At this time of year “Come Lord Jesus” has become our

Advent Prayer as we prepare for the celebration of the

arrival of our Lord and Savior. In preparation for that

great event we often review our year and are reminded

of our need for a Savior. Each of us can go all the way

back to Adam and Eve and discover why we need a

Savior. We were conceived and born in sin and we con-

tinue to sin every day of our lives.

We do need a Savior and we thank God that He has sent

Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of the whole

world. Each day God gives us His good gifts knowing

that someday our Lord Jesus Christ will return and will

bless us with our Heavenly home. So this year we say

with millions of others, Come Lord Jesus, be our guest.

Let these thy gifts to us be blessed. And we are so

blessed.

As we reflect on the blessings of 2017 we cannot but

think about the smiling faces of the children who came

to camp. It is not an exaggeration to say that we had

miles of grins on the faces of over 950 children who

participated in our Summer 2017 programs. That

doesn’t include over 250 Servant Event campers, 80

Camp Indianhead youth, over 240 Family week camp-

ers, and hundreds of children and adults who came to

various retreats during our Retreat Season. What was

especially exciting was the large number of new camp-

ers. We had about 40% of our campers who were new to

Lutheran Island Camp and Christ Serve Ranch.

Our volunteers also blessed us in 2017 with record num-

bers of hours of volunteer time. Volunteers virtually

took over our quilt auction, saving many hours of staff

time and raising over $33,000. Our volunteers planted

and tended a beautiful garden at Christ Serve Ranch and

flower gardens at the Island. Volunteers at the Ranch

extended the boardwalk on Ellen’s Pond, built a new

shelter for horses, removed miles of fence, and helped

get the horses ready for the summer. At the Island vol-

unteers continued to renovate cabins, relocated our ga-

zebo, stained several buildings, worked on the water-

front, and helped with mailings.

God blessed us through our donors with over $1.5 mil-

lion in new gifts and pledges for our Building New

Bridges comprehensive campaign. We were blessed by

a wonderful gift from a long term donor and volunteer

whose prayer of Come Lord Jesus was answered. Over

60 of you used Thrivent Action Grants, providing us

with over $15,000 worth of Thrivent Action Grants. We

hope to reach in excess of $25,000 in Thrivent Giving

Choice Designations and our Shoes for the Mission will

likely break the $10,000 mark. Praise God!

A very special family used their family foundation to

provide great support especially to help us increase and

improve our services. As many of you know, we are

growing significantly. That growth includes new pro-

grams and services for the people we serve, new and

improved facilities, and outreach to new constituencies

in the upper Midwest. In 2017 we added a new pro-

gram director, an additional office person, and an ad-

ministrator for Christ Serve Ranch.

In 2018 we will be praying “Come Lord Jesus” as we

continue to serve congregations, organizations, and

families throughout Minnesota and the upper Midwest.

We will be asking Jesus to enter into the hearts and

minds of these wonderful young people.

We will also be praying Come Lord Jesus, asking that

He would bless us through your generous gifts, your

thoughts and prayers, and your volunteer time.

Come Lord Jesus,

The Staff of Lutheran Island Camp
