LEGO Brick Drive Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona (BBBSAZ) needs community support to reach a unique goal of collecting 5,000 new or gently used LEGO bricks during the upcoming drive beginning February 23rd and ending March 6th. This special drive supports BBBSAZs 60th anniversary fundraising gala scheduled for April 16, 2015 at the JW Marriott Camelback Inn Resort. Celebrate this major milestone by donating building bricks, becoming an event sponsor, and by attending the gala. For more information visit www.bbbsaz.org/gala or to see a list of donation locations click the toy drive button below.

LEGO brick donations are being collected at the BBBSAZ office and at 20 local National Bank of Arizona locations during normal banking hours.

Deborah Batemen, Vice Chairman of National Bank says, As a former Big Sister, teaming up with Big Brothers Big Sisters is one amazing way we can give back to the Valley of the Sun. We are excited to lend a hand and make sure these kids have the tools they need to learn and succeed in building positive relationships for now and the future.

All donated LEGO bricks will be used for BBBSAZ anniversary events throughout 2015 then will be donated to Phoenix Crisis Nursery. BBBSAZ CEO and President Laura Capello says, Building strong and enduring relationships is not only our business, but our passion! Im thrilled that weve been in the Valley helping children for 60 years and recognize community support and involvement is the foundation of our success. Heres to a magical 60th year and beyond!

Annual CampaignIn October we launched our annual campaign which highlighted Big Brother Raymond Kearns and Little Brother Jeremiah who have been matched for 4 years. The campaign raised $62,000 and received over 200 donations from individuals and foundations. In January, at our Big Event, Raymond Kearns was awarded the honor of Big Brother of the Year for his mentorship to Jeremiah. You can read more about the Big Event on the next page.

We cant thank all of our donors and supporters enough. The money raised from our end of the year campaign is very important to our budget and helps to ensure matches like Raymond and Jeremiah get the professional support they need to be successful. It is also used for our recruitment initiatives to ensure that the 300 kids on our waiting list get a Big of their own!

    Events Update The Big Event

On Thursday, January 22nd in honor of National Mentoring Month, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona (BBBSAZ) hosted its Big Event which recognized volunteers and community partners that have made a significant impact in the lives of our communitys youth. The Big Event was hosted at Rustlers Rooste and sponsored by Jack in the Box. Over 250 individuals were in attendance. Paul Horton, Host of KPHO CBS 5s Morning News and a BBBSAZ Board member emceed the event. Laura Capello, CEO and President of BBBSAZ spoke about how wonderful it is to kick off the agencys 60th anniversary with such committed volunteers and community partners. Capello also gave attendees a brief history lesson, she said In 1972 Big Sisters of Arizona had 1.5 staff, an annual budget of $12,000 and 40 matches. Now we have over 40 staff members and typically serve 1600 matches per year.

BBBSAZ has come a long way, and made a lasting impact on the community. We have estimated some 60,000 youth have been mentored since BBBSAZ was founded in 1955. So much of our success is owed to our Board of Directors. Dr. Christine Wilkinson, BBBSAZ Board Chair and Senior Vice President and Secretary of ASU spoke about the Board of Directors commitment to grow the BBBSAZ program. Wilkinson said We are doing everything possible to help raise the much needed financial support to reach the agencys goals, and to once again, provide a mentor for every child that wants one. Providing a mentor to every child who needs or wants one is the core of the BBBSAZ mission but none of it could be possible without the commitment of our volunteers and community partners. Recognizing their success is important and doing so in January allows us to reflect on our accomplishments in 2014. Again we would like to extend our appreciation to all of our volunteers and community partners.

7 Year Match inspires Big Brother to write Book

Becoming a Big Brother was a life choice Ill never regret. I was matched with Daniel shortly after his eighth Birthday in September of 1998 through the Big Brothers Big Sisters Site-Based program. We met weekly, balancing time spent on homework with various weekend activities. We grew closer through hiking, biking, rollerblading, snowboarding, and watching movies.

Daniel made me really look good when he won the essay contest titled, Why My Big is Best distinguishing me as a finalist for Big Brother of the Year. Our match culminated in my speaking on Daniels behalf at his Eagle Scout Court

of Honor and receiving a pin stating Eagle Scout Dad! My growth as a Big Brother was enormous. In fact, the enlightenment born from this match of service with compassion provided inspiration for my writing WISHES TO DIE FOR, a heart-centered guide for those who feel forsaken as they approach the end of life.

The release of WISHES TO DIE FOR in conjunction with the preview of ANDY WARHOL: PORTRAITS takes place in the Big Tent event at the Phoenix Art Museum on March 1st from 6 to 9 p.m. Proceeds from the $10 book will be donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona. Physician, author and Big Brother, Kevin Haselhorst invites all to attend and requests RSVPs to be made through the events calendar at www.phxart.org. Further information is available at www.wishestodiefor.com and preorders for the book can be made through Amazon.com.

Big Tips for MatchesIdeas on things to do with your Little

Sometimes when I get together with my Little and ask what they want to do the only response I get is I dont know. I am not sure what kinds of things might interest my Little and sometimes I run out of ideas! Do you have any suggestions?

This is a common scenario in our matches and fortunately one that can be overcome pretty easily. Here are a few suggestions:

Check out the new ThinkBIG portion on the BBBS website for a list of current events. You and your Little can look at this site together by visiting the local library and using their internet. Events have included horseback riding, college preparation class, sports day, free haircuts and more! No need to come up with new ideas and the majority of events are free. Be sure to register on the site and sign up for your favorites so that a spot is held for you.

You and your Little can each write out a list of 10-15 things that you enjoy doing. Then - cut out each activity and place it into a hat. You can choose your outings by simply reaching in the hat and picking something out. This is also a good way to share your interests with one another while both participating in things you enjoy!

Get in touch with your program specialist and ask for 101 Things To Do With Your Little. This list will keep you busy for months!
