On Friday, May 17, Board Member Lisa King presented our JPS High School Scholarship to Marcos
Fernando Gomez-Moran, son of member Tonita Moran. Lisa said a big reason she is proud to be a JPS
member is because of what we give back to our community. The best financial assistance we give is
when we help a child move on to the next chapter in life by providing him/her with a college
scholarship. Fernando graduated from Bartlesville High School and plans to attend Oklahoma State
University. Tonita’s parents traveled from Guatemala for this momentous event!
left to right: Tonita, sister Cely, dad Fernando, son Fernando (the graduate) mom Clara, daughter Clara, and husband Marcos.

We also awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Lydia Grace Dutton, granddaughter of Retired Life Member,
Sandy Mason. Lydia graduated from Southmoore High School in 3 years and with college credits! She
plans to attend OSU-Oklahoma City to be an EMT then transfer to Medical School. Congratulations,
Lydia!
News from the Barnett’s: Jerold and Gail have been to Texas twice for church meetings and to
St. Augustine, FL and South Carolina for church conferences.
In May, Gail attended a Pilot meeting in Junction City, KS. After the meeting, Jerold and Gail
visited Abilene, KS to tour the Eisenhower Library and grounds. Unfortunately, the museum
was closed for renovation.
In late March they went to College Station, TX to see their son, Philip, in his re-enactment
group. For those who know their son and his interest in World War II history, Phillip will
leave on May 30 for London to join a group from the Museum of the American G.I. in
Southampton. They will be participating in the 75th Anniversary activities of the D-Day
Invasion along with thousands of others. They will ferry across the English Channel on or
about June 2. There are numerous events planned and he can hardly wait to see
everything. Their group will sleep in tents on their journey to Paris along the same liberation
trail the troops took back in 1944. After they arrive in Paris, Philip will spend a few days
visiting their French son, Baptiste, and his family before flying home on June 12. What an
opportunity for a young man for a once in a lifetime experience!
Michelle and Greg Swaney took a cruise to Hawaii to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. They
flew to Los Angeles and boarded the Carnival Splendor in Long Beach for a 14-day cruise. They saw
the Queen Mary which is permanently docked in Long Beach but didn’t have time to take a tour of it.
The weather was cloudy, rainy and chilly on the way to Hawaii, except for one day they managed to
get a sunburn on deck. Once they reached the islands it was warm and didn’t rain on their excursions.
They toured the Maui Gold pineapple plantation on Maui, Pearl Harbor and the battleship Missouri on
Oahu, and went to a luau on the beach. On the big island Hawaii, they visited a coffee plantation,
black sand beach (with sea turtle) and Volcano National Park at Kona on the dry side of the island. At
Hilo they saw two waterfalls, a macadamia nut plantation and ate lunch at a botanical garden. It was
very lush and green because of more rain that side of the island receives.
Cruising back to Long Beach was 4 more chilly, cloudy, rainy days with one stop in Ensenada, Mexico.
They ate a lot of good food, Greg took ukulele lessons, played lots of trivia, and Michelle even won a
24-carat plastic ship on a stick for knowing the most about the television show Hawaii Five-0.
Even with the unusual cool weather they had a very relaxing, enjoyable time and are ready to do it
again!
Our sympathy to the family of Retired Life Member, Bea Crawford who passed on May 16, 2019.

OKLAHOMA CITY CHAPTER
Sharon Eaton, Reporter
June 2019
Greetings from Oklahoma City,
This poem, titled “A Tuesday In June”, by Dee Daffodil just struck me today. It reminded me of old friends, and
ties that bind.
Many years before
They had made a pact
On a Tuesday in June
That should they
Both be alone
On this particular Tuesday in June
They would meet
At the same Antique store
As she walked through the doorway
She was pleasantly surprised
To find
An antique...
Very much to her liking
For some of us, arriving in Webster, Texas on Tuesday, June 18th, will be very much like this poem. We haven’t
seen each other in a year – at the last JPS convention. But we have been planning and looking forward to this
Tuesday for a very long time. When we joined JPS – some of us many years ago, some of us maybe only a year
or two ago, we made a commitment to give something of ourselves to an organization - and found that in doing
so we had gained lifelong friendships that we might not have expected. One of the many aspects of JPS that I
truly love is the friendships made along the way.
You might not be arriving on Tuesday – perhaps Thursday, but I look forward to seeing you in Webster, Texas at
the 77th JPS Convention!

May Monthly Program Bertha Walker presents program about Opportunity Center Inc
Georgia Hughes, left, introduces speaker Bertha Walker
Bertha Walker Thanks Panhandle Chapter members for their Donation To the Opportunity Center in Borger.
Bertha Walker retired after 27 years with the Borger
school system. When her husband recently passed away
Bertha want to be more active in the community and she
loved to cook so she started cooking at the Opportunity
Center for senior citizens. She wanted to make sure that
good balanced meals were provided to all the people that
came to the center to eat and socialize. Bertha served all
the food with God’s love and wanted everyone to be
welcomed and loved when they came through the doors.
She was so successful that she is now the Central Director
for the Opportunity Center.
Panhandle Chapter recently donated money to The Opportunity Center that will be
used to upgrade their kitchen facilities. The Chapter believes it is a worthy cause
that provides the area seniors with balanced meals and a place to socialize with their
peers. The Center opens at 7:30am and closes at 3:00pm each weekday. Seniors are
greeted with heart and love when they arrive. The Center also provides Meals on
Wheels for the Borger and Stinnett area seniors who are unable to come to the
Center. Bertha made changes when she became the Director of the Center. She
created menus to prevent food from being wasted that helped the Center save
money for other avenues to upgrade the Center. A salad bar was created which
provided a variety of items which aren’t on the weekly menu. She didn’t hire a head
cook. The ladies cook as a team and work together to make the center a welcome
place for whoever arrives for a meal. The meals are paid for by donations only. They
feed anyone that arrives even if they are not a senior citizen and the seniors are
encouraged to bring their families as well. If people arrive and are not Seniors, they
can donate money for the meal or pay $5 but if they don’t have money there is no
charge. Bertha believes money is not everything when it comes to feeding people in
need. She believes when you treat volunteers with respect and kindness that keeps
their mission moving forward for the area. The Center’s mission is to deliver services
to the elderly people of the community. Her vision is for The Opportunity Center to
cover a wider area than Hutchinson County. The entire Texas Panhandle is what
she’s setting her sights on and she believes with God’s lead the people of Borger and
the area can make this happen.

Kid’s Meals Supply Drive Kids’ Meals delivers free healthy meals to the doorsteps of Houston’s hungriest preschool-aged children. The
food we donate will go to children ages five and under facing hunger due to extreme poverty. Kids’ Meals has
just launched a program in Montgomery County and our event will help children in Magnolia. We collected
Fruit Juice Box/Pouches, Peanut Butter crackers, Instant Oatmeal Cups, Little Bites- Mini Muffins, and soft
multigrain bars. We decorated (or had our children decorate) lunch bags, and then we filled 445 bags with one
item of each type (juice, crackers, oatmeal, muffins, granola) to provide as a breakfast for a young child. We
had plenty of extra food remaining not bagged, which we also donated to Kid’s Meals for use in other ‘bagging’
events. With 445 bags donated, we are proud to know that we were able to provide breakfast for a week to 89
children.
JPS WOODLANDS MEMBER OF THE YEAR Tricia Opincar began her career with CPChem on January 13, 2014, and by April 10th, she was a faithful devoted member
of JPS! If there’s an activity coming up, and she doesn’t have prior commitments, you
can be sure that Tricia will be participating, and many times her mother joins her, such
fun!
Tricia started her service on the Board of The Woodlands chapter as our Social chair,
and she chaired our Super Bowl Shoe Drive back in 2017, last year she agreed to serve
as our President-Elect, and she is currently serving as our President! She’s doing an
awesome job and has recruited many members for our chapter during this time.
Tricia was nominated for Member of the Year because of her continued dedication,
positive energy, and enthusiasm for JPS. Anyone attending one of her Board meetings
will gain inspiration from her whole-hearted dedication to JPS. Her great energy has
had an impact on many members, and she has re-established flames of passion for JPS,
where there was barely a flicker of light previously!
Tricia has a very demanding position within CPChem as our Senior Talent Acquisition Specialist working on recruiting
new hires for the many open positions that seem to grow within our company as more and more employees retire.
Besides JPS and her work at CPChem, Tricia enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and gardening. Tricia was
born in Bartlesville and her Grandfather was a Chemical Engineer for Phillips 66. She feels being a part of JPS and
working for Chevron Phillips Chemical would have made Grandfather proud.
We feel that Tricia truly reflects the heart of JPS in every aspect as a member and colleague, and we are so glad to honor
Tricia as our Member of The Year.
The Woodlands Chapter - JANUES
Member News We’d like to welcome Bryan Canfield, Vice President, Manufacturing as a new
member to the Woodlands Chapter. Bryan is responsible for leading all our
domestic chemical manufacturing facilities: Borger, Cedar Bayou, Conroe,
Orange, Pasadena, Port Arthur, and Sweeny/Old Ocean. He is also responsible
for our manufacturing finance, central engineering, turnaround, and operational
readiness groups.
We are pleased to celebrate with Shina Mizuno, currently Supply Chain

& Bulk Services Analyst in the Supply Chain organization at The
Woodlands. In her new role, Shina will report to Walter Sanchez, Global
Motor Carrier & Bulk Services Manager. Shina has a Bachelor’s degree in
Supply Chain Management from the University of Houston. Please join us in
congratulating Shina on her new assignment.
In late April, Louise Crider, spent a week in Orlando, Fl on vacation with her sister, Charlotte,
and brother-in-law, Paul. The weather was glorious for a very relaxing week in the sun. They
enjoyed one day at Sea World, and the remaining days at the pool at the Marriott Cypress
Harbor resort. They also enjoyed dinner at Rainforest Café – delightful.
CPChem recently announced the winners of its 2019 dependent’s Scholarships. There were 36
students recognized, and JPS is proud to celebrate with John Kmetz as his son Kevin Kmetz
was one of the recipients. The selection process reviews academic records as well as student
leadership and participation in school and community activities, special honors, work
experience, stated goals and aspirations, and unique personal or family circumstances.
Congratulations Kevin!
The Woodlands is happy to hear that Wanda Pollard-Jones will be returning to the
Houston area. Wanda has been working for Suez Water Technologies &
Solutions in Philadelphia, PA. Wanda will be moving in the month of June and
we are so excited to have her back in Texas!
We also extend Get Well Wishes to Debbie Sweeney. Debbie recently had surgery on May 1st.
We are glad to report that she is back to work, but still taking it easy. Please keep her health
and well-being in your prayers.
The Woodlands Chapter is very sad to say Good Bye to Mary Emerson. Not only did Mary
retire from Chevron Phillips Chemical Company in May, but she and her husband, Leslie, have
moved to Florida to be near family. Mary was a very active member, attending annual
conferences, along with serving as Secretary, Treasurer, and volunteering for many of the
fundraisers and community service projects, taking the lead for the Gathering Place lunches.
Farewell Mary, but we plan to stay in touch and hope our paths cross in the future.
