KUROSAWA

RETROSPECTIVE2nd to 5th, November 2017, at 6.30 pm

Stein Auditorium, India Habitat Centre

Curated by the Japan Foundation, New Delhi, four

of Kurosawa’s most well-regarded films from 1950’s

Seven Samurai to 1965’s Red Beard will be screened

this November as part of the Japan Festival.

Akira Kurosawa (March 23, 1910 – September 6, 1998), who

is regarded as one of the most important and influential

filmmakers in the history of cinema, has directed 30 films

in a career spanning 57 years.

The New York Times describes Akira Kurosawa

as “an autocratic perfectionist with a painter’s eye

for composition, a dancer’s sense of movement and a

humanist’s quiet sensibility. He was a master of both

of the most popular Japanese film genres of his era,

the jidai-geki (a costume-action film involving medieval

samurai) and the gendai-geki (a more realistic, often

domestic drama rooted in contemporary Japanese life).”

Catch Seven Samurai (1954), Throne of Blood (1957),

SYNOPSIS

This film is an adaptation of Macbeth, a story about

the tragedy of a Japanese samurai leader. This

chieftain is goaded by predictions which lead to a

bloodthirsty human conflict. The performance has

adopted the Japanese Noh play style which is heavily

reflected in the interior chamber scenes, especially

by Isuzu Yamada who plays the role of Asachi, both

in terms of make-up and action. The fighting action

scenes are pronounced in the typically Kurosawa

manner. Toshiro Mifune in the battle scenes renders

a very impressive performance.

Goyokai is a group of celebrated Japanese traditional

dancers. The group consists of five dancers from

different schools and family lineages of the Japanese

traditional dance, nihon buyou, who are taking

a lead in furthering Japanese traditional dance.

Representing the quintessence of classical Japanese

dance, their performances vary, from the pieces

derived from kabuki, their original work and the

elegant zashikimai, the dance traditionally intended

to be performed only in tatami rooms.

The artists have worked together to create new

performance pieces and present to the Indian

audience since 2016. The pieces are ‘Sambaso’

(a rhythmical dance piece representing a prayer

for a good harvest), ‘Hagoromo’ (a dramatic dance

piece about the relationship between a fisherman

and a heavenly maiden) and ‘Ramayana’.
