Introduction to the Hoki Museum

Contemporary Japanese Realist Paintings

The Hoki Museum, which opened in Chiba, Japan in November 2010 is Japan’s first museum

dedicated to Realist painting. The Museum's collection includes approximately 480 works by just

over 50 artists, such as those by masters in the field, Hiroshi Noda and Sosuke Morimoto. At any

one time about 140 works are displayed in the

Museum's nine galleries, with a particular focus

on large-scale works.

Special displays feature the works of 15 artists

who have produced large-scale works for the

Museum's My Best Work series. Beginning in

2013, the Hoki Museum Prize for artists under

the age of 40 is held triennially to discover and

foster young painters. The Hoki Museum

Platinum Prize inaugurated in 2018 will also be

held triennially for artists 41 years and older.
