Collapse of Buildings due to Beam-column joints

Guam IEarthquake Engineering Research Institute

BuildingsThe Royal Palm Hotel, west elevation. The Royal Palm Resort was a 22-unit,12 story hotel and condominium complex that opened for occupancy just 18days before the earthquake. The main portion of the complex, that consisted ofthree structurally separate but functionally interdependent structures, was post-ed as hazardous by the building department following the earthquake and wasdemolished by controlled explosion in December 1993.

umns shown (Fig. 15b) failed and shortened. Thesecomponents displaced out of the plane of the facade asseen in Fig. 15b. Another example of damage to beamsand columns in a dual wall-frame building is shown inFig. 16. No cracks were observed in the shear wall, butthe right end settled approximately 500 mm due to bear-ing failure of the supporting soils. Although the shear wallwas likely sufficiently stiff to protect the nonductileframe, the rotation at the base of the shear wall and thesettlement of the footings beneath the moment-frame col-umns contributed to the failure of the first-story columns.Blade columns or narrow shear walls were often con-

structed near stairwells (Fig. 17). These walls or bladecolumns were detailed similarly to regular moment-frame columns with light transverse reinforcement with90-degree hooks and no cross ties. The damage shownin Fig. 17 is similar to that observed in moment-framecolumns.

Design of confinement in RC members

• Japan (AIJ)

• Shear design has been emphasized for beams and columns

• provisions for shear determine the hoop and stirrup

• US (ACI318)

• Seismic detailing of transverse reinforcement has been emphasized for confinement

4

Difference in the background of past earthquake damage makes a minor difference in seismic provisions in two countries

Design of beam-column joint

• Japan (AIJ)

• Large column is necessary

• Minimum joint hoop ratio is 0.2% for joint shear

• No confinement requirement

• US (ACI318)

• Joint hoops for confinement does not allow reducing the dimension of the column section

• Beam-column joint needs to have joint hoop ratio as much as 1.0% because is it a part of column 5

In 1980’s, test data suggested the joint shear strength of beam-column joint is not be the function of joint hoops

Uto Municipal Building collapsed by 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, Kumamoto, Japan, built in the 1970’s, but probably satisfied the current seismic provisions for beam-column joint of Japan. Detailed investigation is underway.

Beam-column Joint & Collapse of Buildings

Key plan

• The reinforcing detailing provisions for seismic design of RC beam-column joints is crucial for seismic performance of moment resisting frame structure.

• Careful selection of “test specimen,” “boundary condition” and “interpretation of statistical data” is necessary.

•Well designed 3D full scale shaking table tests provides most valuable lessons for such purpose.
