Smith, DDS Dr. Smith earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biology at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina and received his dental degree and completed his residency in prosthodontics at Emory University in 1990. He was awarded the Hinman Scholar Award for Scholastic Achievement. Dr. Smith is past president of the Western Georgia section of the American College of Prosthodontists and a member of the Academy of Osseointegration, the American Dental Association and the Georgia Dental Association. Dr. Smith lectures nationally and internationally on esthetic, implant and restorative dentistry. He maintains a private practice limited to prosthodontics. Dwight R. Weathers, DDS, MSD Dr. Weathers is a board certified oral maxillofacial pathologist and academician who took his pre-dental, dental and specialty training at Emory University and then joined the faculty at the Emory University School of Dentistry. He served as a faculty member, Chairman and finally as Dean until the School of Dentistry closed in 1992. He was then transferred to the School of Medicine where he served as Professor of Pathology and Dermatology. He has made presentations nationally and internationally and has been featured clinician at both major dental meetings and continuing dental education venues.

Demand for rooms is high during our program. After this date, reservations will be made on a space available basis. Hotel rooms in the Emory Beauty and the Beast room block are reserved for Emory Beauty and the Beast program registrants. Meeting MaterialsIn accordance with Emory University’s sustainability initiative, the course handouts/syllabus will be available on an usb flash drive and emailed to registrants prior to the meeting. Course Description Beauty and the Beast Esthetic Dentistry and Oral Disease will provide timely and practical information on new advancements in oral pathology and the benign and malignant tumors and conditions involving the jaws. Participants will also learn how to detect, diagnose, and use parameters discussed to formulate good clinical oral pathologic diagnoses. In addition, current preparation techniques for crowns and veneers will be presented as well as restorative techniques from diagnosis to completion.

Who Should AttendDentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants and all members of the dental team will benefit from this clinically focused program.

HAVING FUN WITH ORAL PATHOLOGYDwight R. Weathers, DDS

This lecture will cover the principles of differential diagnosis and a presentation of numerous clinical cases. It will be an interactive experience in which the participant will have the opportunity to see a variety of clinical cases with a brief clinical history and then suggest differential diagnoses and appropriate procedures which will be helpful in further delineating the suggested diagnoses. This should lead to a definitive diagnosis. The speaker’s diagnosis will be offered as well as the reasons for that diagnosis. A discussion of the entity will then follow.

Upon completion of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

n Give examples for principals of differential diagnoses of oral disease;

n Evaluate numerous cases representing a wide variety of oral conditions and diseases;

n Appropriately evaluate and treat oral and para-oral lesions which might present in the dental office.

PATHOLOGIC DISEASES INVOLVING THE BONES OF THE JAWS

This presentation will include discussion of some new advancements in oral pathology and the benign and malignant tumors and conditions involving the jaws. It will include the fibro-osseous lesions. The characteristic clinical and radiographic presentations of the diseases will be discussed as well as methods for diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Upon completion of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

n Describe some recent knowledge gained through research regarding diseases affecting the oral head and neck region;

n Discuss the diagnosis of bony lesions of the jaws;

n Interpret the differences between reactive and neoplastic diseases of the jaws;

n Evaluate diseases of bone which may appear in the dental office.

ENHANCED AESTHETICS WITH CROWNS AND VENEERSJay S. Smith, DDS

Many patients visit our practices solely for esthetic enhancements. Cosmetic dentistry has evolved into an integral element of contemporary dental practice. We must develop the ability to evaluate existing cosmetic deficiencies and recognize patient expectations to design proper procedure for smile improvement. Dr. Smith will discuss the factors that make up smile design and decision making for the best treatment options for the patient. Current preparation techniques for crowns and veneers will be presented as well as material options with regard to esthetics and function. This presentation will outline restorative techniques from diagnosis to completion. Provisional techniques, longevity, and cementation recommendations for various materials will be discussed.

Upon completion of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

n Evaluate patient’s desires with regard to smile enhancement;

n Decide between a crown or a veneer;

n Demonstrate preparation techniques;

n Determine which material is best for each patient;

n Describe cementation protocols;

n Maintain the restorations
