Introduction This handbook is your key to a smooth recital experience. It should

answer most questions about the recital and prepare you to have a great recital experience. It will review policies & procedures for all students and families to follow.

The recital will be a unique and rewarding experience for all our students. If this is your student’s first year at the Syracuse Dance Academy, (SDA) we encourage the entire family to approach this milestone with support and enthusiasm. The benefits of performing in front of a live audience and participating in the artistic process of choreography, rehearsal, and teamwork are immeasurable. Most important, each student is given the opportunity to be someone special – someone who has worked with diligence, determination, and heart to achieve her or his goals.

Performing on stage builds confidence and character; it gives one a sense of accomplishment and pride. These are qualities we want to see our children attain. The recital experience helps a child in other aspects of their lives at school, church, sports activities, and much more.

Dress Rehearsal: Tues, June 26th Val A. Browning Center

Classes marked with a Star * by their cast are combined with another class for recital. Combined practices have begun.

The Dress Rehearsal is held at the Val A Browning Center in the Austed Auditorium at Weber State. Please check the schedule for your student’s Dress Rehearsal Stage Time. Students should arrive 15 minutes before their scheduled dress rehearsal stage time in costume with their hair and make-up done in order to be ready to go up on stage when it is their stage time.

Please do not be late! Allow plenty of travel time for parking and finding the auditorium. Each class has limited time on the stage. We are not able to wait for students who do not arrive on time.

All classes will have stage time in which they will practice their routine with full performance lights and music. This is your opportunity to take close up pictures and video. No cameras of any kind are allowed during the performance.

Prior to their stage time, students should congregate with their class mom in the auditorium seats and prepare to go on stage. Personal belongings including street shoes should be left with parents.

Classes will be called on stage to rehearse. Following the rehearsal, they will be taken to the balcony to find their seat and meeting place for the evening’s performance. Next, students will be taken to the picture room for class & individual pictures. After pictures, students are finished with dress rehearsal and should arrive at 6:30 that evening for the performance.

Dress Rehearsal Schedule: Tuesday, June 26th Arrive 15 minutes earlier than your scheduled Dress Rehearsal Stage Time so you can be on stage at the start of your Stage Time! If you are involved in more than one routine, it is your responsibility to change costume and ensure you get to your next number. We are not able hold the show or dress rehearsal if you are late.

Pictures

We will be taking snapshot pictures for the recital program during class time June 18-23. Regular class attire should be worn. Be sure you are in class this week so your picture will be in the program. Professional pictures in costume will be taken at the dress rehearsal.

Professional individual and class pictures will be taken following the dress rehearsal in the morning & afternoon hours on June 26th. An individual/team package is at $26 and include shipping/handling! Payments are made to Avante Photography at the dress rehearsal. Group Class & Individual Pictures will be mailed home in August.

Cameras are NOT allowed during the performance. Even though you are welcome to take pictures during dress rehearsal, snapshot pictures are often disappointing due to stage lighting and angles. We offer professional class pictures for your convenience. You can relax & enjoy the performance, and have something to remember it by.

Recital Etiquette

We would like the recital to be a great experience for everyone involved, including the audience. To help provide a positive environment, we suggest the following:

Please arrive early and be in your seat before the performance starts at 7:00 p.m.

Many parents bring good luck gifts or flowers for their students.

Best dress is recommended.

Turn cellular phones and pagers off.

No cameras of any kind will be allowed in the theater during performance. You are welcome to video or take pictures at the dress rehearsal but you may find home videos and snapshot pictures are disappointing due to stage conditions. Any photography or filming during the performance is distracting. We offer professional pictures with a FREE DVDs of the recital to provide an enjoyable atmosphere for you to watch your child.

Please do not call out or yell your child’s name during the recital.

Please remain seated for the entire the performance. Leaving early or coming in and out during the performance is inconsiderate to those around you and disrupts the performance.

Not recommended for children under age 3. If you must bring a young child, please purchase tickets near an aisle in the back.

5

Performance The performance will start promptly at 7:00 p.m. All students must

arrive and meet with their class mom volunteer in the balcony at 6:30. Students should use the restroom before their parents drop them

off. Be sure to take all belongings, including their street shoes. No activities, games, toys or snacks should be left with students.

If your student is involved in more than one routine, it is your responsibility to change costumes and ensure that they get to their next number. We are not able hold the show or dress rehearsal if you are late.

Classes are taken to the stage to perform and will return for finale. Following the finale, students will be escorted into the north hallway to be picked up. Please do not pick up your student from the balcony or backstage. Watching the recital from the balcony gives students the opportunity to view other classes, allows them the opportunity to enjoy a cultural experience and celebrate their hard work with their classmates.

To reduce congestion in the hallway, please send one parent to pick up your student. Parents will start in the north hallway and continue around to the end. This helps with congestion and flow of traffic. Arrange a meeting place with the rest of your party to greet your performer.

Costumes Recital Costumes will be sent home in June for all accounts that are paid in full including June tuition. If your account has a balance due after June 10th your costume will be available in the office for pickup once your account is paid in full. Accounts with balances over $100.00 need to be paid with cash or a credit card. Checks will not be accepted on accounts with a balance over $100.00. No refunds on tuition, costumes and fees. The SDA takes pride in affordable, practical, and modest costumes. In the selection process, we take into consideration the age of the performer and the type of routine being performed. Students are carefully measured to ensure that costumes fit; however, costumes are manufactured in an assembly line fashion and may require that you make minor alterations. If a major alteration seems necessary, contact the office and we can provide assistance. Costumes are delivered complete, new, and clean. Please do not allow students to play in or eat in costume. Small items may get lost. Just like a swimsuit, underwear should not be worn with dancewear, leotards, or tights. Children’s Dance Students may wear plain white panties under their rompers. Parents or students, if they are old enough, are responsible to change in and out of costume if they are involved in multiple numbers. We are not able to hold the show for costume changes so please make a plan to be where you need to be at the right time!

Make-Up

Make-up should be worn to performance and dress rehearsal. Eye shadow, eyeliner, mascara, blush, lip liner and lipstick should be natural tones, no blue! Cheeks and lips should be dark reds and dark pinks (no brown or purple tones.) Eye color on lids should be beige or rose with the contour color being brown or charcoal.

Make-up should look natural, but be heavy. If your performer does not have enough make-up, she will look washed out on stage. We want their beautiful features to be seen from a distance.

Hair Below is a list of recital routine/songs and their assigned

hairstyle. Please see the hairstyle description and pictures for details. Necessary changes to hair, or hair pieces will be made at the Dress Rehearsal. If your student has more than 1 hairstyle, have them use their dance or cheer hairstyle for the entire performance.
