Jazz is a musical style that originated at the beginning of the 20th century in African American communities in the Southern United States.

Its origin is the Ragtime.

Rhythms

Melodics: - Rhythms:

Melodics: they are common to see band playing violin as melodic instruments in France.

Rhythms: the piano and the electic guitar : - They are the more common instruments

in jazz bands. - They can be melodic or rhythm

instruments.

The most important characteristics in jazz are:

- Improvisation. - Blue notes. - Syncopation. - Polyrhythms. - The importance of the interpreter.

New Orleans Dixieland (1910 ‘s) Swing (1930-1940 ‘s) Bebop (mid 1940 ‘s) Afro-Cuban (1950-1960 ‘s) Jazz fusion (1970 ‘s) Acid jazz (1980 ‘s) Nu jazz (1990 ‘s)

It uses medium and fast tempos and the syncopation.

Swing bands usually featured soloists who improvise on the melody over the arrangement.

Some musicians: Benny Goodman and Count Basie.

- A single instrument: mainly for piano concerts are interpreters who achieved great technical perfection.

- Trio: consists of two rhythm instruments (drums and bass) and as a solo piano, guitar,etc.

- Quartet: formed by drums, bass and piano, plus a wind instrument. It is one of the most important groups.

- Quintet: formed by a rhythm section (piano,bass and drums) plus two melodic instruments usually saxophone ans trumpet.
