INNOVATION
JNJ is the only festival supporting youth development through jazz and other art forms, health awareness and life & golf
skills. As the brochure demonstrates, JNJ presents a unique variety of festival activities that positively impact the mind, body
and soul of individuals.
HISTORY (brief)
From the beginning, the principal goal of JNJ has been to present an impressive level of musicianship and artistic expres-
sion. Each year the festival-goers are treated to some of the very best jazz performers in the region and other parts of the
world. The Tennessee Valley Jazz Society often features world-class musicians who have been cited top performers by their
peers. From NEA Jazz Masters Ellis Marsalis, Marian McPartland, Jimmy Heath and Randy Weston to Grammy-nominees
Freddy Cole, Nenna Freelon to Roy Ayers, Richie Cole, Victor Goines and Fred Wesley, the JNJ has brought some of the
world's most influential talent to the area.
EDUCATION
A vital component of the JNJ is the focus on jazz education and youth development. Each year, the festival creates educa-
tional opportunities for students and aficionados through its jazz clinics and master classes. NEA Jazz Master Ellis Marsalis
has committed his support in developing and implementing a comprehensive program to enhance the Tennessee Valley Jazz
Society’s Jazz Studies. Ellis Marsalis’s commitment promises to bring a strong complementary cultural/arts/education thrust
to the region already internationally recognized for its’ science/technology emphasis. Young musicians from schools around
the area are invited to perform at JNJ and learn from such noted educators like Ellis Marsalis, Jimmy Heath, Jothan Callins,
Devere Pride and Ken Watters in a focused and effective workshop setting.
