OVERVIEW 1.0 Introduction Because people who drive small cars should not have to compromise on comfort and safety, Honda has made the Jazz the roomiest, safest and most comfortable small car in the world. Thanks to a revolutionary approach to small car design, this has been achieved at the same time as producing a car that uses less fuel than any of its competitors. The Jazz is a new concept of car. Offering huge interior space and unrivaled versatility in an extremely compact package it also provides class-leading performance, fuel consumption and handling, together with genuine big-car quality and refinement in its operation. It’s such a versatile car that it liberates its owner to indulge in a range of lifestyle activities, which would be outside the scope of conventional small cars. Carrying mountain bikes or bulky items of furniture are quite within the jazz’s capabilities. No longer is it necessary to borrow another car or use a trailer when the Jazz can do it all. And for all its van-like carrying capacity it’s a jewel to drive – quiet, smooth and responsive. Not surprisingly the Jazz is an award winner:

1.1 Main theme. The philosophy behind the Jazz concept can best be defined as Honda’s determination to produce a compact, affordable small car which did everything at least as well as cars in the next class up, whilst at the same time leading the small car segment in fuel consumption and functionality. As well, it should also offer attractive but distinctive styling as a way of encapsulating its brilliance for everyone, not just its owners, to see. Both inside and out, the Jazz has style and presence – a considerable achievement for a small car so strong on practicality. A small car with a big attitude, it has an unmistakable Honda identity, and its prominent headlights, big glass area and careful detailing give it a look of quality. Bold curves and striking use of colours and textures make the interior a pleasant place to be. A no-compromise approach to the design of the body and the mechanicals as inter-related components has produced a small car with its own unique DNA – a car which provides so much, yet consumes so little that it sets a completely new standard for the world to follow. The Honda Jazz establishes new benchmarks for spaciousness and flexibility, and it also provides that elusive ‘big car quality’ feel in a small car. 1.2 Key features / benefits. The Jazz is built on Honda’s new Global Small Car platform. This ingenious floorplan and suspension design allows a variety of body styles to be engineered around the same basic understructure. One of its features is the forward-mounted fuel tank. As well as providing a supremely safe location, as far away from any impact forces as possible and protected by the chassis rails, the tank’s positioning immediately frees up additional space, benefiting both luggage room and rear passenger accommodation. Honda will not accept that leadership in packaging, environmental concerns or refinement implies below-average driving performance, and the Jazz is no exception. Critical attention to body design for weight saving, together with innovative engine design for high torque where it’s needed, ensures that the Jazz can uphold Honda’s reputation for dynamic performance in all driving conditions, together with frugal use of fuel.

1.3 Technology at a glance. The Jazz is not just about clever body design and advanced mechanicals. Both are entwined in a unique car, which is a ‘clean-sheet’ design. The forward-mounted fuel tank dictated a new lightweight engine to ensure correct weight distribution with a full fuel tank. The low rear floor made possible by the fuel tank’s location also demanded an innovative, space-saving rear suspension design to enable maximum advantage to be taken of it. The new i-DSI (intelligent Dual and Sequential Ignition) twin-spark engine is optimised for strong torque at low engine speeds, meaning that the engine doesn’t have to be worked hard for spirited performance and therefore consumes less fuel. Jazz Sport features Honda’s renowned VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift, Electronic Control) system applied with a longer stroke to the engine block from the 1.3L Jazz engine, providing this model with strong high-rpm pulling power, great for sportier drivers. The optional CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) automatic is a further contributor to the Jazz’s fuel economy as it’s much more efficient than a conventional automatic and also allows the engine to run at very low revolutions when cruising on the highway. It also has the advantage of no stepped ratio changes, adding to the feeling of refinement. Jazz Sport has the addition of a 7-speed sports shift manual mode. 1.4 What’s new? Even though the Jazz was launched in 2002, so much is still so new that rivals have still not yet caught up. From its radical platform design with the centrally-located fuel tank to its ingenious seat folding arrangement to its super-torquey and amazingly economical engine, the Jazz does so much more than many considerably larger and more expensive cars. IN DETAIL 2.0 Body design and construction Unlike any Honda small car before it, the jazz was designed from the start to be a ‘Global’ car, with equal appeal across international markets. Intensive worldwide research was conducted to find the characteristics that buyers of both cultures were seeking in a world-leading small car. Right from the start of the design process it was decided that two separate teams would be given the challenge of designing the definitive new world small car from Honda. Individual teams based in Japan and Germany tackled the task of creating the exterior and interior design concepts. The exterior profile was basically created by the Japanese team, but the lines were softened and made more ‘international’ by the German team. The German team had prime responsibility for the interior, but the Japanese team had an influence in ensuring that the interior concept could be transferred through to cost-effective production without losing its European flair. 2.1 The concept of ‘zenshin’ Jazz’s innovative, original styling is based on a design concept called ‘zehshin’, meaning new, progressive and integrated. Its characteristic short nose creates a monoform design, a theme established in the larger Civic model, and its highly aerodynamic form contributes significantly to fuel economy. Flared, muscular wheelarches give the Jazz a broad, purposeful stance. 2.3 Cab-forward, central fuel tank Successfully meeting the conflicting design objectives would take jazz to the top of the small car class, but it could not be done without a completely fresh and innovative approach to the fundamentals of small car design. In order to provide space for the rear seats to double-fold, leaving a low, completely flat storage area, it was necessary to move the fuel tank away from its traditional position, in the Jazz, the fuel tank is in the centre of the car, under the front seats, leaving all the space behind the driver free for flexible passenger and load-carrying ability. This positioning of the fuel tank is a world first for any car. Conventional thinking would suggest that this positioning of the fuel tank would mean front-heavy weight distribution when the tank is full, resulting in unbalanced handling. Honda’s answer was to design an all-new lightweight, high-efficiency engine, which compensates for the weight of a full tank of fuel and ensures that the handling quality remains at the top of the class. The super-short nose enhances visibility and ensures that nearly 80% of the car’s length is available for people and their luggage. Ultra-compact suspension design, particularly at the rear, allows maximum unimpeded use of the huge interior space, including provision of a vertical position for the rear seat cushions, allowing the transport of large, bulky items. A further benefit of the central fuel tank positioning is the fact that it is as far as possible from a crash impact from any direction, as well as being fully protected by cross-members and the floor frame itself. 2.4 A rigid structure The Jazz has an immensely strong and rigid structure. Bending stiffness of the body shell is 210% greater than that of Hondas previous micro vehicle (Logo), and torsional stiffness is increased by 116%. Apart from the obvious benefits in terms of impact resistance, this enhances handling and ride through improved suspension performance, since the suspension mounting points always remain in perfect alignment.

2.5 An emphasis on refinement Appropriately for an innovative small car, NVH performance of the Jazz is of a high level and both road noise and acceleration noise suppression place it at the very forefront of the class. The high-stiffness platform plays a key role in this regard. Specific measures include sealed liquid engine and transmission mounts and an exhaust system using double spherical damping joints. Noise intrusion into the cabin is controlled by the use of double seals entirely encircling all four passenger doors. These are located on both the inner and outer edges of the doors to create a very efficient seal, providing additional noise insulation performance of an impressive 30dB. 3.0 Interior design and features 3.1 Sporty and distinctive design The interior of the Jazz features a ‘dynamic layered style’ as its theme, which equates to an exciting combination of sporty style and space. Bold, sweeping curves are complemented by contrasting light and dark shades of chic grey with metallic accents. This treatment is complemented by the use of high quality mouldings, trim and switches that are large and easy to use. The metallic instrument panel and aluminium-coloured instrument cluster add to the sporty ambience. The central speedometer flanked by the tachometer on the left and the fuel gauge on the right are located beneath an independent binnacle for added clarity. White graphics and red pointers appear against a black background. A liquid crystal display set within the speedometer can show three different functions which are switched by a button located above the fuel gauge: the odometer reading, a trip mileage reading or estimated average fuel economy. Importantly, the audio system is fully integrated, providing seamless styling continuity as well as security. The large switches allow easy, error-free operation and a high-legibility liquid crystal display permanently displays the time as well as radio station / CD track information. Below the audio unit are the heating / air conditioning controls which include three bold circular dials controlling distribution, fan speed and temperature. Power window switches are located on the door armrests and the power mirror switch is on the fascia to the right of the steering wheel.

3.2 Amazing space, and endless loading possibilities The Jazz delivers exceptional interior spaciousness within its compact 3830mm overall length. The secret is the unique platform with the fuel tank mounted centrally, together with a particularly compact rear suspension design and a lightweight, compact engine design that frees up a huge proportion of the car’s length and height for people and their gear. The multi-stage doors (the front doors have three opening angles and the rear doors two) assist entry and egress in tight parking situations. Jazz Magic Seat System makes the most of space available in this vehicle. With all five seats occupied luggage space is still a remarkable 380 litres, and four tiedown hooks are provided in the boot floor for added versatility. In Utility Mode, with the rear seats fully collapsed, the total volume to roof level is an outstanding 1321 litres in a 1.7 metre long compartment sufficient for three 26 inch mountain bikes stood upright. In Long Mode, with the passenger front seat fully reclined onto the collapsed rear seats, allows items up to 2.4m in length to be stowed, perfect for a surfboard. The third storage area created is in Tall Mode and provides a height of 1280mm, ideal for carrying items such as large pot plants but also useful for young children to use as a changing room. Whether loading from the side or rear doors, the lifting height is minimal. 3.3 Storage of small items Loading flexibility is matched by the provision of plenty of cabin storage space for small items, instrument panel undertrays are provided on both driver and passenger sides. The space on the driver’s side can hold two 500ml bottles laid flat, or a folding umbrella for example, and a coin holder is provided in the outer corner. The passenger’s undertray located beneath the glovebox can hold a 1.5 litre bottle, five 350ml drink cans laid end to end, or two 500ml bottles laid on their sides.

i-DSi uses two spark plugs per cylinder to burn petrol more efficiently. The computer adjusts the firing time of each spark plug for maximum fuel burn.

The glovebox is divided into two compartments. The upper compartment can accommodate a variety of everyday things while the lower one can hold 10 CDs plus a number of small items. A six CD stacker accessory can be fitted to the lower compartment. There are other smaller storage compartments throughout the interior, including a cylindrical ashtray, which can be stored in any of the cupholders. 4.0 Drivetrain 4.1 Engine Concept The ground-breaking concept of the Jazz meant that a completely-new, lightweight, high-efficiency engine was required to satisfy the challenging fuel efficiency / performance objectives. The new engine was also needed to give the car, with its forward weight mass brought about by the centrally-mounted fuel tank, a balanced weight distribution. Also, because of the limited crush space inherent in the short-nose design, the engine needed to be very compact. Interestingly, the all-new 1339cc i-DSi SOHC engine is of eight-valve design, but it features two spark plugs per cylinder, each with its own coil and able to fire independently, in an ingenious high-swirl combustion chamber design based on the technology used in the hybrid Insight. 4.2 Operation of dual and sequential ignition The dual and sequential ignition system optimises the timing of each spark plug based on engine speed and load. The intensive combustion at all engine speeds not only controls knocking but also permits a much higher compression ratio (10.8:1) to achieve a higher output with less fuel consumed. Key to the i-DSi engine is rapid, intensive combustion, using two spark plugs in each cylinder mounted diagonally opposite one another, and a very compact, high-swirl combustion chamber made possible by the narrow (30°) valve angle and SOHC single-pivot cylinder head.

Each pair of spark plugs is fired sequentially with the interval between the two depending on engine rpm and load. The intake side plug ignites first, than as the flame propogates the exhaust side plug is fired (before piston top dead centre) and the flame expands rapidly into the whole area to achieve complete combustion. This arrangement provides much faster combustion and higher cylinder pressures to provide high engine output. The programming of the ignition timing map achieves a careful balance between economy and power output. At large throttle openings, up to engine speeds of around 2600rpm, intake side ignition is advanced and the exhaust side slightly retarded. In the mid-range the exhaust side is further retarded, optimizing output. At high engine speeds ignition is almost simultaneous for optimum power and torque. At part-throttle, the simultaneous ignition phase is more extensive, commencing as low as 3500rom. 4.3 Jazz Sport VTEC Engine For a sportier drive, the Jazz Sport holds a 1.5 VTEC engine in place of the 1.3L i-DSI. In order to keep the balance, the Jazz Sport engine is a modification of the i-DSI utilizing the same engine block but with a longer stroke and application of a VTEC head. Honda’s VTEC system provides volumetric efficiency at all engine speeds to achieve good low- to mid-range drivability and strong high-rpm pulling power, along with high fuel economy. The key to successful lean burn operation is overcoming the lengthening combustion time as the mixture becomes increasingly lean. The new swirl port, optimised cylinder dimensions and higher compression ratio help to substantially reduce combustion times, allowing leaner operation and covering a greater range of engine speeds. The stratified charge with the mixture richer near the spark plug and leaner toward the combustion chamber periphery means the richer mixture ignites more readily and creates a fast-burning, stable flame that promotes more complete combustion. The valves switch to normal operation (both fully opening) when more power is required, with the mix using as much air as is needed to burn the fuel. The variable arrangement of the rocker arms is achieved using the technique of hydraulically operated locking pins under the control of the engine unit (ECU). The switch from one phase is virtually imperceptible, and the switch over point depends on whether the engine is at full or partial throttle.

4.4 Top torque, effortless economy i-DSI: The intelligently controlled, intensive combustion delivers class-leading levels of fuel economy, yet torque and power are optimised across all engine speeds, especially in the low and middle ranges. As a result, the Jazz demonstrates a remarkably flat torque curve, and exceptional flexibility for a small car. Peak power output of the 1339cc engine is 61kW (83 PS) at 5700rpm, and maximum torque is 119Nm at just 2800rpm. Significantly, approximately 90% of the peak torque is available from 2000 to 5000rpm. Superb flexibility and lively performance are the results, and the engine is particularly well-suited to the optional CVT automatic transmission. The engine is particularly refined in its operation, helped by the high-stiffness cylinder block, the large-diameter crankshaft journals, the lightweight, high stiffness aluminium sump and the centre-feed intake manifold. VTEC: Peak power output of the 1497cc engine is 81kW at 6000rpm, and maximum torque is143Nm at 4800rpm, offering zippy, powerful performance along with excellent fuel economy. 4.5 A choice of transmissions The Jazz offers a choice of two transmissions. The sweet-shifting short-stroke 5-speed manual maintains Honda’s reputation for providing the world’s most accurate and precise manual gearshifts. The optional stepless CVT is 8% more efficient than Honda’s previous CVT as well as being 10% lighter. It features a power-saving wet multi-plate starting clutch instead of a torque converter, adding to its efficiency. The Jazz Sport offers a 7-Speed Sequential Shift CVT automatic transmission controlled by steering wheel mounted paddles. Activating the manual mode is easy – a button is pushed on the steering wheel, and then the driver can manually change gears using the ergonomic paddles on the steering wheel. Using the manual mode provides 7 ‘gear’ fixed ratios to the CVT automatic transmission, in each of the CVT automatic gears – Drive, S and L. Between selecting Manual mode and activating the paddles the Jazz CVT operates as a stepped automatic transmission. A second push of the button on the steering wheel or changing between D, S and L gear selection switches the driver back to automatic mode. The system also resets when the ignition is turned off.

5.0 Chassis 5.1 Suspension designed for precision handling The Jazz’s compact dimensions and excellent maneuverability are complemented by a suspension design that sets out to deliver a high degree of agility and stability. At the front, the strut suspension system has been selected for its packaging efficiency matched to high performance. To overcome the tendency of dampers to bend under load, which increases friction and compromises ride comfort, the Jazz features special springs in the front suspension which when compressed generate a force which cancels out the side forces generated by damper curvature. The Jazz’s rear suspension features a wide-span, H-shaped torsion beam mounted to the body structure via bushes, with large-diameter tubular arms carrying the wheel spindles. Unlike previous designs in which the torsion beam is located by trailing arms and a transverse Panhard rod, the assembly moves through a smaller angle of oscillation and this, together with the centrally-mounted fuel tank, has permitted the load floor to be lowered by 220mm, to the obvious benefit of load capacity.

Jazz comes with 14 inch steel wheels fitted as standard, with alloy-style plastic wheel covers and 175/65 R14 tyres. Jazz Sport comes with 15 inch alloy wheels fitted as standard and 185/55 R15 tyres to complement the sports exterior.

The rear suspension features a wide-span, H-shaped torsional beam. The assembly moves through a smaller angle of oscillation and this has allowed the load floor of the vehicle to be lowered.

At the front, the strut suspension arrangement has been selected for its packaging efficiency matched to high performance.

5.2 Electric power steering Honda is a pioneer in the development of electric power steering and the Jazz benefits from this technology. A microprocessor-controlled DC electric motor works in conjunction with a rack & pinion steering gear to provide assistance to the pinion as it moves the rack. The microprocessor senses vehicle speed and steering torque and is programmed to vary boost accordingly to optimize steering feel. The steering is therefore lighter at low speeds and firmer on the highway. Benefits include:

- Reduced fuel consumption because there is no engine-driven pump - Compact dimensions and reduced weight - Greater programming flexibility - Smoother operation with reduced kickback

In the Jazz, the EPS assembly is mounted low, which provides a number of benefits. In terms of suspension geometry, the location provides an improved toe curve (the amount the tyres angle in or out from the body about the vertical axis). This means that over the vertical travel of the wheel the toe characteristics are substantially improved in comparison to a conventional strut arrangement. The Jazz’s front suspension moves from slight toe-out at full bump to slight toe-in at full rebound, whereas conventional struts move fom substantial toe-out at full bump to almost neutral in the medium position then back to substantial toe-out at full rebound. With the Jazz, the result is far better tyre contact with the road and enhanced ride comfort. The Jazz’s EPS system features further refinements including a damper-equipped wormshaft that provides an ideal level of road feedback whilst minimizing rack rattle. Thanks to the compact, efficient design of the front suspension and steering system, the Jazz’s turning circle is a class-leading 9.4 metres. Due to the 15” wheels on the Jazz Sport there is an adjustment to the steering rack resulting in a wider turning circle (9.8m), which is still very competitive in its class. 5.3 The brakes to match Ventilated front discs and drums at the rear provide the jazz with exceptional braking performance to match its handling capability. Also, 3-channel ABS is standard equipment, along with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA). This system is able to measure small differences in front and rear wheel speed to ensure that exactly the right amount of braking effort is applied to the rear

wheels, whatever load the car is carrying and accounting for the weight transfer during deceleration. This allows the full potential of the rear brakes to be realised, reduces the risk of premature rear brake lock-up and offers a more consistent pedal feel. In addition, under moderate to heavy braking, a brake assist system increases the power braking output via a master power device. 6.0 Safety and Security 6.1 Safety Concept One of Honda’s prime objectives in designing the Jazz was best-in-class levels of safety and a carefully-devised body structure based on extensive computer analysis and a ‘real-life’ crash testing programme carried out at Honda’s world-leading multi-directional crash testing facility in Japan. This intensive design and engineering strategy means that jazz has achieved Euro NCAP ratings of four stars for occupant protection and three stars for pedestrian protection. 6.2 Body shell geometry Dealing with the energy involved in a frontal impact is made all the more difficult by the reduced dimensions of a small car, particularly a short-nose design such as Jazz. However, by using experience from the omni-directional crash test facility and other Honda vehicles and employing its G-control technology, Honda has achieved class leading levels of safety. 6.3 Arch-type side frame and floor structure

One of Honda’s prime objectives in designing the Jazz was best-in-class levels of safety and a carefully-devised body structure. Key to the Jazz’s crash safety performance is the ‘arch-type’ front side frame. This smoothly-curved chassis member absorbs substantial energy in its own right through progressive deformation, but its design is such that it directs the impact energy down and beneath the cabin, thereby minimizing intrusion into the critical passenger cell. The side frames work in conjunction with the immensely strong floor structure that is created by the cross-members and longitudinal members surrounding and protecting the central fuel tank on all four sides. The ‘cross-floor’, tunnel-like structure that results from this perimeter frame provides exceptional floor stiffness. This also benefits side impact performance in which centre pillar reinforcement works together with floor cross-member stiffness for outstanding performance in maintaining cabin integrity. 6.4 Advanced SRS airbag system Driver and passenger airbags are fitted as standard, in conjunction with front seatbelt pre-tensioners. 6.5 New front seat design To reduce the likelihood of whiplash injuries in the case of rear impact, a new front seat design is used. The headrests are moved slightly further forward, while the bending characteristics of the upper seat structure provide a more controlled energy-absorbing role to effectively cushion the occupant as he or she is pulled back. 6.6 Pedestrian safety is a priority Honda continues to conduct extensive research into pedestrian safety centred on its Active Safety Vehicle, the ASV3, together with sophisticated pedestrian dummies, road accident analysis and computer-assisted simulation. The effectiveness of that programme was demonstrated by the Civic 5-door and CR-V, each of which recorded the highest ever rating in the Euro NCAP pedestrian protection tests. Now, the Jazz has recorded the same score, three out of four stars. Specific pedestrian-protection items on the Jazz include:

- An unobstructed area beneath the bonnet allowing it to deform on impact. - Bonnet hinges, front wing mounting brackets and radiator top brackets that

compress under impact. - Energy-absorbing front bumper beam. - Energy-absorbing sliding wiper pivots.

6.7 Extensive anti-theft protection The Jazz features a series of theft-deterrent measures, including an immobilizer from which it is virtually impossible for thieves to clone the entry code. The ignition key features a built-in transponder, which when removed, immobilises the engine’s fuel injection and ignition so the engine cannot be started. When the key is reinserted and turned in the ignition, the transponder in the key transmits a code via an antenna built into the steering lock surround to the engine management computer. If the code is confirmed by the engine ECU, the engine will start – but only then. The immobilizer communication unit, engine ECU and ignition key / ignition barrel transponder are all linked via a bus communication. Central locking and keyless entry is included, with a remote system that uses FM radio waves rather than infrared, for more effective operation over a 3 metre range. It features a relock function to prevent misoperation. The ignition key is of the wave-type design, which provides added anti-theft protection and has the added benefit of minimising damage to clothing. The petrol caps locks with the vehicle and no key is required to access the fuel filler when the vehicle is unlocked. 7.0 Environment Environmentally, the Jazz is a world leader. With the lowest fuel consumption in its class (5.7l/100km), it also boasts the lowest CO2 emissions. (Fuel economy for the Jazz Sport is expected to be up around 7% on the Jazz 1.3 i-DSI, yet it will still remain top of its class). Not only that, but 90% of the vehicle’s total components are recyclable (the interior is 98% recyclable). In the Energy Wise Rally 2004, Jazz manual came in second place for the small cars category with 4.85L/100km and the Jazz CVT Auto came in third place with 5.09L/100km. The Rally combines driving conditions that people encounter everyday. There were also two people and luggage in the vehicles!

9.2 The Honda Price Promise New Hondas, model for model, are sold at the same value-packed price all over New Zealand, irrespective of who the customer is. A fair, honest price for all. Honda does not participate in discount-driven volume fleet sales, runout sales when models are being replaced, or ‘demonstrator sales’. All that these activities do is depress the value of existing customers’ cars. Since the Honda Price Promise was introduced, customers are appreciating how much their cars have held their value, and how painless it can be trading up to a new model. Therefore, a lower total cost of ownership for the consumer than with other car brands. 9.3 The Honda Treefund The Honda Treefund is a natural solution to air pollution problems. For every new Honda sold, Honda NZ will fund 10 native trees. The buyer also has the opportunity of making an additional donation to the Treefund when they purchase. With over 60,000 native trees expected to be funded every year, a veritable Honda forest will be created.
