I would like to welcome you and thank you for supporting our 2nd annual TD Niagara Jazz Festival! The overall support we have had from the community and beyond is outstanding, and combined with a hard working and dedicated team, we now are able, to expand the festival into other parts of the Niagara Region. A festival is a celebration of life and to have jazz music as the soundtrack in the idyllic setting of Niagara is a perfect fit. And a huge thank you to my life partner and co-creator Peter Shea, without whom none of this would have been possible! Thank you for following us on this incredible journey and let’s ‘LIVE LOVE JAZZ’ together for many years to come!

A GREETING FROM OUR CHAIRMAN

It gives me tremendous pleasure to welcome you to the second annual TD Niagara Jazz Festival.

Congratulations to Juliet, Peter, Maria and the rest of the team for putting together an outstanding program of artists and events and for the tremendous amount of excellent work that has been done to move the Festival to an even higher plateau after our very successful inaugural year last year. Thank you to our terrific venue partners, sponsors and grantors; the people behind these institutions are visionary and their organizations deserve your support. We hope you enjoy this year’s line-up of events and continue to make the Niagara Jazz Festival part of your calendar in the years to come!

Joe Robertson Chair, Board of DirectorsNiagara Jazz Festival

NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE

N iagara-on-the-Lake is a town filled with history, traditions, and beauty. The Niagara River meets Lake Ontario here on its way to the Atlantic Ocean, and is just a mere twenty kilometres downstream from the mighty Niagara Falls.

The British government purchased this land in the 1780s from the Mississauga Na-tive Nations. From that humble beginning a town was born. From a military reserve to a cultural capital, NOTL is now home to music, theatre, heritage and recreational pursuits, making it one of the most unique destinations in Canada. .:

about being myself, writing from the heart and showing my love for life. That’s what I want to convey. After the

S t. Catharines is the largest city in the Niagara Region. Also known as “The Garden City” for its lushness and abundance of bike and hiking trails, it was originally settled by 3,000 United Empire Loyalists at the end of the 18th

century. Known as Shipman’s Corners, it was the economic heartland for eastern Niagara, made even more prosperous by William Hamilton Merritt’s ingenious canal scheme that linked Lake Ontario with Lake Erie—the Welland Canal. The city was also a strategic stop along the Underground Railroad, and has always been home to a vibrant, rich, multicultural history, blending the wealth of industry with the richness of culture. .:

N iagara Falls has always exerted a strange and powerful appeal. The Falls has been a destination for travellers, honeymooners, entrepreneurs, and adventurers, for hundreds of years. But for millennia, Native Nations also

honoured the power of the waters, and many legends tell of the spirit that inhabited its depths.

A Seneca story tells how Hi’no’, Thunder Being, fought with a giant serpent to save the people, and their massive fight caused the waters to rise like a mountain, and as the thriving body of the serpent became trapped, gigantic waves swept rocks and massive torrents of water across the land. When it was all over, the water and rocks formed the graceful arches that today form the spectacular Niagara Falls, seen in awe, by millions every year. .:

T he Town of Pelham, Ontario is composed of five unique and historic villages: Effingham, Fenwick, Fonthill, North Pelham and Ridgeville—“Five Villages

One Community.” Together they blend an agricultural econ-omy with a growing commercialism, while honouring each community’s unique cultural heritage.

Historically, Pelham Township was always a desirable area, from its early Aboriginal settlements to the pioneers of the 17th and 18th centuries. Nestled between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario the land was ideally situated with rap-idly growing urbanism to its north, Hamilton and Toronto, and in the east, Niagara Falls and Buffalo. Today the area boasts rich conservation grounds, popular hiking trails, a significant tender fruit industry, world-class vineyards and restaurants, and a healthy variety of cultural activities. From its rising hills of Carolinian Forest, residents can see the urban growth in the Niagara Peninsula, but the villages maintain a quiet respect for their rural origins. Residents here have a well-developed sense of community pride. Vis-iting this picturesque part of Niagara is always joyful, full of the reminders of bustling community life. And certainly worth taking a turn off the QEW to find out for yourself. .:

or rock n’ roll, Kaeshammer is a highly trained technician and interpreter, and an incendiary piano player. Kaeshammer’s latest recordings have been produced by Ron Lopata and reflect his singular brand of pop-tinged-jazz that owes as much to Billy Joel and Paul McCartney as to Professor Longhair and Albert Ammons, When Michael steps on stage he’ll greet you warmly, as an honoured guest. Then he’ll introduce his special guests, his rhythm sec-tion, his drummer, his bassist, and his horn section will rip it up with him on any tune he suggests. The party will be on.

Montreal Gazette’s Bernard Perusse says: “He’s a showman. If you haven’t seen him live, you haven’t experienced him in his true element.” .:

T he Shuffle Demons broke onto the Canadian music scene in 1984 with an electrifying musical fusion that drew in equal measure

from Sun Ra, Charles Mingus, Run DMC and the Beastie Boys. Their high-energy musical perfor-mance blends virtuosic jazz and funk played with eye-catching costumes and stage-play to create one incredible show.

Over a 30-year span this multiple award-win-ning band has released eight CDs, two hit videos, performed in numerous TV and radio shows and toured the world extensively.

Shuffle Demons refer to themselves as a mash-up of funk and free form jazz. However their vision is not limited to label—Demon Rich Underhill is a prominent voice for social justice, environmental-ism and other left-wing causes.

Critic Peter Hum, The Ottawa Citizen: “…viscer-ally appealing rhythms, the smart and tightly executed horn arrangements and passionate improvisatory flights combine for a mighty wallop.” Long story short—these cats can play. .:
