JAZZROC SHOWCASE PROGRAM
Thanks to our Hosts…..
ROYAL PRINCE ALFRED
YACHT CLUB
Thanks everyone for your support and a big thank you to the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club for
letting us use their lovely venue and beautiful piano.
A quick background - I have been resident pianist at RPAYC now for the last 5 years and the
RMYC for 20 years before that. I've been lucky enough to play music as a soloist and in bands,
in two of the nicest venues in Sydney. I have always included students in performances at both
clubs whenever appropriate.
About six years ago James Morrison's sons and some other very talented musicians, came here
on Friday nights to practice 'jamming' (James’s children are ex Newport Primary and Pittwater
High school students), these guys are now travelling the world as respected Jazz musicians.
RPAYC loved it when these guys were playing here, so when they moved on the Club
approached me to keep the student vibe going and the club is very appreciative and
supportive of what we are doing.
The Jazzroc team play here every Friday night which includes Roc, Chelsea and Charles who is
now studying at the NSW Conservatorium, as well as advanced high school and HSC students.
We like to keep our recitals as informal as possible and mostly within an ensemble setting.
This is a great chance to play together as well as listen to others – an important part of
learning music and particularly jazz.
I would like to encourage everyone to relax and enjoy the venue while the music is playing and
we have varied the program to include all the levels and different age groups.
Thanks again
Mr Roc Koren

JazzRoc Recitals.
Doing recitals and encouraging students of any age or level, to play in front of family, friends and other students is an important part of our teaching philosophies. Recitals should be inspiring and entertaining. They give students something to work towards as well as the chance to listen to other students and be aware of all of the various levels within our course and teaching methods. I also put a lot of emphasis on teachers and students all playing together, again at all levels from beginners to advanced.
The ABRSM Jazz Piano books and Ensemble music, plus all the songs within our course and folders, work extremely well in this 'playing together' environment. It all makes for a fun and interactive experience for both the players and the audience. Recitals are also an excellent opportunity for parents to see where our course takes the students
As we provide music for the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club every Friday night they are happy for us to hire the Edinburgh Lounge Bar, put on bar staff and hold our recitals in this fantastic setting and make use of their beautiful Grand Piano. We feel it is very important that the recitals be as relaxed and informal as possible so the students don't get overly nervous and enjoy the whole experience, taking away fun memories and inspiration.
