Science Dear Scientists,
Design an animal with special adaptations to help it survive.Draw your imaginary animal
and label at least two adaptations that help the
animals survive in its environment. You should then draw and label a map of where the
animal is from. Finally, name the animal and write a fable about it.
** An adaptation is when an animal changes to the environment that it lives in.An
example would be a Chameleon that changes color to the environment it now lives in.

First, watch this video for an example: https://www.artsonia.com/teachers/ideas/entry.asp?id=12
STEP 1
· LIGHTLY sketch your first or last name.
· BE SURE TO LEAVE MORE SPACE THAN USUAL BETWEEN EACH LETTER.
STEP 2
Use some of the suggestions from the video to add “extras” to your letters:
· Make some curved parts angular, add extensions or “arrow points” to ends of letters.
STEP 3
· Use your pencil to “thicken” each letter into a bubble-style letter.
· Also do this with any lines you drew at the tips/edges of your letters.
STEP 4
Now, Use a Sharpie, (or a thin black marker) to outline these new letters and ERASE the guide letters
inside!
STEP 5
· Create a dripping paint effect: On the tops of your letters, it’s just a “bubble” shape that goes
around the tops. On the BOTTOM is where you can get creative and play with the length of your drip
shapes.
· Do this in pencil first, THEN pen!
STEP 6
· Use a pencil and a ruler to draw horizontal parallel lines to start a brick wall behind your letters,
above AND below. (This can get tricky on the bottom where you will have to lift your pencil a lot to
skip over the drip effect!) Use alternating vertical lines to create the individual bricks and Sharpie over
your wall when you’re happy with it.
STEP 7:
· Use TWO color pencils for your letters:
· One color fades from the top down, the other color fades from the bottom up.
· You can leave the center of your letters white, OR allow the two colors to overlap a bit in the
middle.
Tips for successful blending:
· Press harder where you want your color darker, and lighter as you start to fade.
· Layer your color pencil work in multiple directions for the smoothest look.
STEP 8:
Next, use a regular pencil to shade around your “drip border”.
· Press Harder close to the letters, and lighter as you move away from the letters.
· It is helpful to use your finger to soften and blend this shading work!
· Also, add a little emphasis to the edges and corners of your bricks--- it will help them look more

Day 1: Monday - Session 2
Larger Division with Money
Remember all the Division Strategies we came up with? See below.
Now let’s try some strategies to solve this problem. We will be dividing $72.00
equally among 3 groups.
Here are some cool ways that this problem may be solved.
You may also share 72 tally marks in three groups, counting 24 in each group, but
that may take a little longer.
Now you try. Use any strategy that works best for you!
Answer Key:
Day 2: Tuesday - Session 3
Discussing Larger Division With Money
Today let's explore multiplication. Multiplication can also help us with division
problems. Below are a couple of strategies to use multiplication or skip counting
to solve division problems from day 1. This is problem 4.
Now let’s practice multiplication. On the next page, complete each problem
before moving to the next problem. As you work through the problems see if you
notice connections between the problems or how some problems become easier to
complete.
Problem Work Space
Well done! What did you notice?
Day 3: Wednesday - More Multiplication Strategies.
Problem Work Space
Did you notice how you could solve 99 x 26 if you already knew 100 x 26?
If 100 x 26 is 2600, then I just have to subtract one 26 from 2600 to know 99 x
26 = 2574. You only need ninety-nine 26s so once you have one-hundred 26s, you
have to subtract one 26.
Day 4: Thursday - Modeling Multiplication and Division
Today we are going to look at two models that can be used for multiplication and
division, the Ratio Table, and the Area Model.
Let's write an equation to represent this problem using (s) as the total number of
slices. Equation: 28 x 12 = s
There are many ways to solve this problem. Here is an example of how to solve
this problem using a ratio table or an open array.
Can you find and circle the two Partial Products of (20 x 12 = 240) and (8 x 12 =
96) in each model?
On the next page it’s your turn to try a division problem using the two models.
For this problem write the equation using the letter (t) for the possible quotient
(or answer). Remember this is a division problem.
Next, notice how the models were used to find the answer to how many teams can
she make?
Step 1: Step 2: Step 3:
*Notice how the student picks numbers of teams to build up to 216 students
through steps 1-3.
Why do you think this student used numbers such as 2, 10, 20, etc…?
Now let's look at how the Array Model was used compared to the ratio table.
Step 1:
Step 2:
Compare and contrast the two models for solving a division problem. How are they
different? How are they alike? Do you prefer one over the other? Why or Why
not?
Day 5: Friday - Revisiting the Doubling and Halving Strategy
Review the following below. Notice how doubling one factor and halving another
factor results in the same product.
Problem Visisual Notice?
24 x 25
This student used an
open array model. The
answer is 600.
12 x 50
Notice the 24 was cut
in half and the 25 was
doubled from the
previous problem.
The answer is still
600.
6 x 100
Notice the 12 was cut
in half and the 50 was
doubled. The answer
is still 600.
Now you try. On the next page is a table for you to practice the doubling and
halving strategy of 13 x 8.
Problem Show the array strategy doubling and halving.
13 x 8
26 x 4
52 x 2
104 x 1
I hope you now have another tool in your toolbox on how fun multiplication can be!

Week 5/4/20 - Science
Graded Assignment: Animal by design
Monday - May 4th:
Directions: Design an animal with special adaptations to help it survive. Draw your imaginary
animal and label at least two adaptations that help the animal survive in its environment.
You should then draw and label a map of where the animal is from. Finally, name the animal
and write a fable about it.
** Adaptation is when an animal changes to the environment it is living in now. An example
would be a Chameleon when it changes color to the setting it is living in.
Tuesday - May 5th:
Today you will continue with your animal by design activity!
● Another example is a polar bear having white fur to help it blend into the snow!
Wednesday - May 6th:
● Read the following fictional explanation for naturally occurring structures or behaviors.
Determine an adaptive reason for the body structure or behavior addressed in the fable.
Thursday - May 7th
● Science catch up day: Please take this day to catch up on you Animal by Design
and Adaptations Myths activity.
Remember your “Animal by Design” activity is due on Monday 5/11!
Friday - May 8th
● Today’s activity will look at problem solving involving different scenarios of
animal or plant adaptations. You will read the scenario and create the
equation and solve the problem.
1. A cactus has spines to protect it from being eaten by desert animals,
but the spines also allow the cactus to retain water in an environment
with very little rainfall. If there are 32 cacti in a desert with 198
spines each, how many spines are there in all?
2. Migration is a behavior in which animals move from one environment to
another during seasonal changes. Hummingbirds migrate south every
year over a four-week period. If hummingbirds travel 32 kilometers
per day, how many kilometers do they travel in total to get to their
destination?
