international Women's Day Breakfast

March 8 was the 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day and to celebrate this milestone, a group of women Board members and Senior Team leaders from JBMH attended the Honourable Paddy Torsney’s 15th Annual International Women’s Day Breakfast which was held at the Burlington Holiday Inn. The 240 attendees were a blend of professional men and women as well as senior students and their teachers from all of the Burlington High Schools. The Minister of Health and long Term Care, Deb Matthews, was a special guest who outlined her party’s response to child poverty and education. We were also very pleased that she made a particular point to meet the women from JBMH!

But the highlight of the morning was the keynote speaker, Dr. lynda Redwood-Campbell. Dr. Redwood-Campbell is a resident of Burlington, a family practitioner and Associate Professor at McMaster University where she teaches about Global

Health. She also Chairs the Global Health Committee for the College of Family Physicians of Canada. Her passion for the health and education needs of women and children around the world was highly inspirational. Her presentation was infused with incredible meaning as she told the story of two women that she has encountered in her travels with relief organizations to the >>

sessions have been held with many of the departments and programs at JBMH, our Medical Staff Association, Auxiliary, and Foundation, as well as some of our key community partners including Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Community Care Access Centre, Halton eMS and Police, the City of Burlington and many more.

We have received some great feedback on our Strategic Framework and we are continuing our engagement throughout the end of March with opportunities for public and patient feedback through our website www.jbmh.com.

Our Draft Strategic Plan will be posted

for comment on the JBMH website and we encourage you as medical professionals to review the presentation as well as your patients, friends and neighbours. We welcome and value the input of our JBMH team and community as we define the direction of our organization over the next three years.

The Draft Strategic Plan will be presented to our Board of Governors on April 6, 2011 for approval and we will continue to engage with you, our staff, volunteers, partners, patients and community through the coming months as we embark upon our Strategic Plan 2011–2014.

Frances Roesch is the inaugural Director of Medical Affairs at Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital, reporting directly to Dr. Dwight Prodger, Vice President, Medical Affairs. Frances will provide day-to-day support to JBMH’s physician leadership and is a member of the leadership group and quality and performance management council. Major accountabilities include supporting the medical leadership with quality, safety and service initiatives, as well as risk management, medical-legal matters, bylaws, policies and procedures as they relate to the professional staff.

After nearly four years as the first Director, Medical Affairs and Medical Recruitment at Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, Frances is

pleased to return to work in lHIN 4, having worked previously as Medical Recruiter with Brant Community Healthcare System.

Frances completed a Bachelor of Public Relations from Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia and a Masters in Health Administration at The University of Memphis, Tennessee. Before returning to Canada, Frances spent several years as editor with the Illinois State Medical Society in Chicago. She is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare executives and a member of the editorial Board of Healthcare executive, a Chicago based periodical for Healthcare leaders.

Alisdair joins us from the Brant Community Healthcare System where he last served as the Director, Information and Communication Technology and Health Information Services.

Alisdair was responsible for the operational and tactical activities of the Information Technology Department. He was also responsible for the implementation of the BCHS eHealth Strategic Plan which included 28 major initiatives. Alisdair was Co-Chair of the BCHS Information Services Team which was recognized in their Canadian Health

Accreditation Report for best practice.In his role at JBMH, Alisdair will provide

leadership for JBMH in the area of Information Management (IM; People, Process, and Technology) and eHealth. Alisdair will coordinate the related strategic planning in partnership with internal and external stakeholders. His responsibilities will include the execution of tactical plans and ensuring operational efficiencies in support of achieving related approved strategies.

All of this will be achieved with a focus on client service, best practices and experience in all areas of Information Management.

Accreditation Canada is a not-for-profit, independent organization whose purpose is to provide health care organizations with an external peer review process. This helps organizations assess and improve the services they provide to their patients and families. This assessment is built on evidence-based Standards of excellence and Required Organizational Practices (ROPs) that were developed by health care experts including frontline workers. These standards and ROPs are crucial to patient safety, so we look forward to having the surveyor’s on site.

From April 11 to April 13, 2011 each surveyor will follow a patient care path throughout the organization, along the way observing, reading documentation and speaking with staff about how they provide their patients with the excellent care they do while asking questions pertaining to the Standards of excellence and ROPs like safe medication practices and falls prevention strategies. This is called a “tracer”. When you see our surveyors ron noble, Margaret Bachle or Dr. Annette Snow, tell them proudly about your day

to day work, the initiatives on your unit and the leading and best practices you use everyday to provide the best patient care. All of the surveyors are health care professionals and want to learn about the staff at Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital and the good work that we do every day.

ron noble is the Surveyor Team leader and currently works at Credit Valley Hospital as the Vice-President of Corporate Planning. He has been in this position since 2002 and has held several other health care executive positions throughout his career. He also brings to us a community perspective through his work with the United Way and Big Brothers.

Margaret Bachle retired from the position of Vice President for Nursing, Social, Psychology, Spiritual and Religious Services and Rehabilitation at the Credit Valley Rehabilitation Centre which she held for 23 years. Currently she works as part-time educator at Sheridan College, so do not forget to let her about your work as patient and family educators in patient safety when she visits the patient care areas.

Dr. Annette Snow MD is a lieutenant

Colonel in the Canadian Armed Forces and has been there since 1993. She also holds a Master of Health Science degree with a specialty in Disaster and emergency Medicine. In addition to her Armed Forces work which takes her all over the world, Annette works as an emergency physician for the Quinte Healthcare Corporation, so look out for Annette in the eD and celebrate your successful programs with her.

The team will be on site starting Monday, April 11 at 8:00 a.m. They will meet with the Senior leadership Team and the Board of Governors until 9:30 a.m., and then the patient tracers will begin. To prepare for the Accreditation Surveyors mock tracers have begun with the JBMH teams to help them prepare for our survey – staff in the areas visited have been able to talk easily about the good work they do every day and the processes they have in place to keep patients safe. Congratulations to all!

Don't forget to attend the organization debrief on Wednesday, April 13 at 2 p.m. in the Bodkin Auditorium to hear the results of our survey and to enjoy the celebration!

Our Acute Medicine Accreditation Team acted on the feedback from staff about their need to have regular Code Blue practice. Benefits of practising emergency procedure are efficient response by all team members, clarity of roles, and readiness to respond.

With the guidance of the Acute Medicine Professional Practice educator lila Modesto-McKay and the help of lily Spanjevic, Geriatric Nurse Clinician, the patient care team on 4east  had the opportunity to review the procedure during the code, practice use of the equipment  and try out different roles.

Once again the Burlington Canadian Tire stores have teamed up with the Burlington Post and Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital for the annual Bears That Care program. Through the generosity of many local businesses, Canadian Tire donated dozens of stuffed bears to the JBMH's Maternal and Child Care Unit on March 4.

“Canadian Tire is proud to join the Post and the Burlington business community on this fantastic program,” said Canadian Tire Fairview Street store manager, Brad Gibson.

The Burlington Post is proud to launch the program each year and is grateful to Canadian Tire for their role.

“Bears that Care is all about the spirit of giving. That is why we launch this program each year at this time. The best part of this program is through a small act of generosity we as a business community are able to put a smile on a child’s face during what can be a difficult time,” said the Post’s Ted lindsay.

Dear Hospital Staff,My family and I recently came back

from Haiti. We had a very blessed and eye

opening time, and the whole team was able

to help build two houses (for families with

amputees as a result of the earthquake),

hold medical clinics and purchase and

distribute rice and beans to needy families.

At the compound we stayed at in

Saintard, we met many orphaned children

who were so thankful for every little thing.

I just wanted to thank all of you for all

your generous contributions. They were

greatly needed and definitely appreciated.

The people there are in such need, but

Dr. Redwood-Campbell concluded her talk by quoting the famous anthropologist Margaret Mead, who said, “A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

I know the JBMH women left the session confident and encouraged that the work we are doing every day in health care has a positive impact on our patients and that we must continue to find the changes that can make a difference. It was a great way to start the day!

Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) have recently been upgraded with new patient care monitors that are enhancing the quality and safety of care we provide for our patients.

Patient care monitors measure a patient’s vital signs including their heart rate, blood pressure, temperature and respiratory rate. The ICU has received 17 new monitors - 2 transport monitors and 2 central station monitors. The monitors are in the patient rooms and the central stations are located at each of the nursing station pods. The transport monitors are used for transporting patients who require continuous monitoring as they go for required tests.

“These monitors offer a broad portfolio of innovative monitoring and information systems to support decision-making and help improve patient care,” says leslie Brooks, JBMH Manager of ICU and Respiratory Therapy. “The modular systems assure immediate access to patient data when and where needed, helping to speed and support decisions, which improves response time, advances patient care and enhances patient safety.”

The new monitoring system is part of JBMH’s plan to standardize patient monitoring systems. “Standardization allows care providers to all be familiar with the same equipment and allows staff to move between units without having to worry about using different monitors. Standardization also helps reduce servicing costs,” says Brooks.

The new monitors will also improve patient flow.

“In the past, there were different monitors

in different departments. Now with this new system we will have continuous monitoring of our patients – from emergency admission to intensive care – which is an integral part of our safety concept.”

“The PACU has received 12 monitors and already there is evidence of improved patient safety," says Zaida Wilson, Manger of OR/PACU/OPPU/endoscopy Services.

Janet O’Donnell, RN PACU, agrees. “The new monitors have a faster reaction time, more accurate sensing of vital signs, better memory storage and access to patient information is superior. The quality of care we provide improves because we are able to retrieve data on our patients’ vitals much more quickly, efficiently and accurately.”

The monitors in both areas of the hospital are proving to be very user-friendly as well.

“The staff have easily adapted to the new monitors. Our RNs and Respiratory Therapists all received 4 hours of hands-on training. We are also training a small group of RNs to become super users who will become the resource for the ICU and PACU staff on the monitors. Spacelabs, the company that installed the monitors, also provided on site clinical and technical assistance for the day and night shifts for the first 2 weeks of the install plus telephone support.”

In fact, installation of the monitors was extremely successful with no disruptions to patient care.

“We want to thank Spacelabs for doing a fantastic job. The installation was seamless and was completed in just one day. We’d also like to thank all departments helped to make this happen – I.T., Biomed, engineering, Purchasing, Infection Prevention and Control, Centralized Staffing

and DeS. It was a true collaborative effort,” says Brooks.

Brooks also points out how willing staff were to transition to using the new technology.

“We would like to thank the ICU, RRT and PACU staff for coming in for the training.  Since the installation, staff have taken to the new monitors brilliantly which has allowed us to focus on providing even better care for our patients.”

Monitors are an essential tool in caring for patients. They provide vital information such

as blood pressure, pulse and temperature which enables medical staff to monitor

The 16th Annual Chilly Half Marathon and Frosty 5k took place on Sunday, March 6, 2011 in downtown Burlington with a fantastic turnout of nearly 4,000 runners. Festivities for the event began on March 5 with a Pasta Party at Paradiso Restaurant including several notable guest speakers such as Canadian marathon champion Tania Jones.

The $23,000 raised from the event will help purchase a portable ultrasound machine for the emergency Department (eD).

An ultrasound uses reflected sound waves to non-invasively visualize various areas of the body. The portable, emergency ultrasound is custom-designed for emergency clinicians with technology that acquires the optimal image in seconds from a design that can be carried, mounted on an IV pole, or fixed on a wall or ceiling. This technology aids physicians with their physical assessments along with improving the accuracy of certain procedures in the eD.

Terry Bedard’s career included 28 years with Sun life Assurance Company of Canada’s Investment area. He retired in 2000 as Vice President Investments in Sun life’s International Office, and was responsible for oversight of all worldwide investment assets backing the company’s insurance liabilities. Prior to joining Sun life, Terry spent seven years in the mining industry both in Canada and the U.S.

While officially retired, Terry does some project work, mostly with small property and casualty insurance companies. A major part of his time now is spent in the volunteer community around Burlington and Hamilton. Terry is currently active on The Salvation Army Golf Fundraising Committee, the Burlington Community Foundation Investment Committee, McMaster University Pension Fund Trust Committee and the Board of the Auxiliary to JBMH. Past positions include the Board of the Art Gallery of Hamilton, treasurer of the Hamilton and District Men’s Bonspeil Committee and JBMH’s Finance and Building Committees.

“Recognizing the contributions that volunteers make is important," says Terry. “By utilizing the skills I have learned during my business career I hope my contributions have made life in our community and at JBMH a little bit more pleasant.”

Terry and his wife Mary have lived in Burlington for the last 30 years and have two married children and four grandchildren.

Barbara Hladysh became involved with the JBMH Auxiliary after retiring from the Ontario Public service. During her 28 years at the Ministries of Tourism and economic Development she held a number of senior management positions that included being responsible for the development and implementation of consumer-driven marketing programs for Ontario’s domestic and international markets, including the network of 18 Provincial travel information centres and 1-800 Ontario Call Centre. In addition to representing Ontario’s tourism industry on various Federal/ provincial committees, she chaired the inter-provincial committee on Travellers with Disabilities.

As an active volunteer at the hospital, Barbara is the Team leader of the elderlife Program and along with 25 other members works with older patients who are at risk of developing dementia while at the hospital. She has been on the Auxiliary Board for 4 years, and was Chair of the Auxiliary’s 50th anniversary committee. Barbara also sits on JBMH's Board of Governors as the Auxiliary representative.

Barbara was previously involved with the Paletta Mansion marketing Advisory Committee, the Canadian Institute for the Blind and Heart and Stroke .

Barbara lives in Burlington with her husband and two children.

Brian Torsney has been in the branding and advertising business for more than 25 years, working on some of the world’s best-known brands. For the past 12 years, Brian has been President of PlAY, an advertising and branding agency with its head office in Burlington serving many regional and national clients. PlAY develops marketing strategies, communication plans and creative services across all media. In his career Brian has also been a partner in an Internet company that was sold to Torstar, and served as a vice-president of a major financial services organization.

Brian started his career as a journalist, then an advertising copywriter, eventually graduating to managing an agency business. He still contributes articles to publications in between his favourite hobbies, cooking, playing guitar, cycling and golfing.

Brian joined the Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital Foundation Board of Directors four years ago and now serves as Vice-Chair. “You can judge a community by how well it takes care of people. I think we now have a remarkable team with leadership deeply committed to making our hospital one of the leading community hospitals in Canada.”

Brian has served his community through Rotary, on community and national boards and through his participation in many local and national political campaigns.

Brian grew up in Aldershot and currently resides in downtown Burlington. He and his wife Sheila have three grown daughters.

Kevin Brady has been an active volunteer for the Foundation since 1999 when he was a member of the Major Gifts team, helping to raise funds for the capital campaign. His three priorities are to recruit the best people, volunteers and staff to lead the fundraising team; to create and implement a comprehensive communications plan for the Foundation; and to raise funds in order to build the best community hospital to serve Burlington and area.

Kevin and his wife Barb own and operate Brady Financial Group founded in 1998. Specializing in providing financial security solutions for corporations, business owners and individuals, the company has grown into one of the largest and most reputable independent financial services companies in Southern Ontario.

With a deep commitment to Burlington, Kevin is actively involved in Rotary, Hamilton/Burlington YMCA, Burlington Hospice, United Way and Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital and in 2010 was named the Philanthropist of the Year by the Burlington Community Foundation.

Currently, Kevin is serving on the 2010-11 Foundation Board of Directors as well as being a member of the JBMHF Ambassadors Council executive.

Kevin and Barb live in Burlington with their three children. Their family is passionate about giving back to their community.

The Auxiliary to Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital is hosting its annual fashion show to support JBMH on April 14 at the Burlington Convention Centre at 1120 Burloak Drive. The theme this year is Runway Couture - The Party in White. A cocktail reception begins at 7 p.m., with the fashion show following at 8 p.m., hosted by Brian Wood of CHCH News.

The event is over 80 per cent sold out and it’s due to all the new and fantastic things the event has in store. The fashion show will feature collections by famous Canadian designers including Adrian Wu who is local to Burlington, lundstrom, Rodney Philpott For Shkank, Ross Mayer and Wayne Clark, as well as up-and-coming fashion design graduates from Seneca College.

The show will also include special guest appearances by Burlington Mayor Rick Goldring, CFl Hall of Fame Member and Canada’s Athlete of the Century Russ Jackson, Burlington Professional Firefighters, JBMH Physicians, Board Members and Senior Team Members including JBMH President and CeO eric Vandewall.

This year’s styles are provided by Bush’s Men’s Wear, The Oyster, Scrivener’s Men’s

Apparel, Specs on Pearl and What a Heel and the models are provided by Vogue Models & Talent.

“We are amazed to see the event is over 80 per cent sold out and we have a treat in store for our guests with a special appearance by Michael Burgess,” said Barb Brady, event co-chair.

“With all proceeds supporting the purchase of a birthing bed for the Maternal and Child Unit at Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital, we’d love to see this exciting event sell out,” added Karin Pasma, event co-chair.

Tickets are available for $100 each and are being sold through the JBMH Gift Shop and Auxiliary Office. Premium Seating with VIP Reception is also available for $2000 for a table of 10.
