anticipated to provide member-friendly access to various areas within the JCCs.

Without diminishing the need for vigilance on the part of staff and members, the access system will integrate with the JCC’s state-of-the-art membership software which was inaugurated a little more than a year ago. Members will be categorized according to an access-as-needed entry system with doors electronically accessible via card-reading scanners. Enhanced audio and visual systems with monitored doors will be central to the system in a way that will be familiar to most users.

Visitors to the JCC who are not members will be granted access and a temporary digital pass after being identified and recorded by membership desk staff. Our efforts are aimed at increasingthe safety of all of our members, including children as well as our staff. We’ve gone to great lengths to do this correctly and effectively. Sharon Kostiner, JCC Membership

Director encourages all of our members and the staff of all of our agencies to carry their JCC membership card, key ring fob, or digital image at all times to facilitate smooth access.

An introductory meeting was held with multiple agencies which will be affected by the new system. Further information and instructions are expected to be made public within the next several weeks. Questions concerning the system may be addressed to me at [email protected].

Your cooperation and understanding are very much appreciated as we work towards increasing the safety of the entire JCC Community.

Sincerely,

Richard Zakalik

In concert with our long-term efforts to provide safe and secure facilities and heeding the advice of the National Secure Community Network (SCN), the JCC has undertakenan in-depth process which will culminate in a new access system for both the Holland Family and Benderson Family Buildings. In cooperation with Homeland Security, the FBI, local law enforcement and the JCC Association a plan has been devised and is in the process of implementation that will aid in the control of access to JCC facilities.

While there are no known immediate threats and there has never been an incident at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Buffalo, events occurring elsewhere in both the Jewish and general communities clearly delineate a need for enhanced facility access control. Following the lead of JCCs throughout North America, this system is

Adapted Aquatics Programs The JCC is providing children in WNY diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) with two unique swim programs: Au-Some Swimmers© and You & Me on Land & Sea©. Both programs offer one on one instruction, but bring everyone together during portions of the class for group activities. The JCC feels passionately about offering all children the opportunity to learn how to swim both for the safety benefits and to provide everyone with life skills that will enable them to stay active and fit throughout their lives. Thanks to funding from the Variety Club, Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism and Autism Speaks, we are able to offer both of these programs at a discounted rate to the WNY Community. We are also offering a brand NEW Adapted Aquatics swim lesson program for all children with special needs at the Benderson Family Building, called Special Friends©.

For easier on-line registration, use the 5 digit code!

Au-some swimmers© Au-Some Swimmers was designed by Eric Poniatowski, the Aquatics Director at the JCC Holland Family Building to teach critical life skills and provide a gathering place for families to connect and support each other. The instructorsdemonstrate skills such as feet first entry, putting face in the water, kicking, and pulling. The instructors also communicate with children using laminated visual cards that illustrate pool safety and swim skills.

All swim lessons are one on one, with combined group play activity at the beginning and end of the lesson focusing on swimming, safety, and cooperative skills. neW! You & me on land & sea© You & Me on Land & Sea© is an adapted swim program combined with a relationship-based Parent-Child and Peer Play Group. It was developed by Julie Kingsley and Erin Ruszaj, the Director and Assistant Director of Aquatics at the JCC, in partnership with Sue Bundy-Myrow, PhD. Julie and Erin are both instructor trainers for the American Red Cross who bring a combined 40 years of experience of teaching students with special needs. Sue Bundy-Myrow is a Licensed Psychologist and Theraplay® instructor and supervisor, who specializes in working with developmentally disabled children, teens, and their families. All instructors for the program are Red Cross certified as both lifeguards and water safety instructors and have received additional certification as adapted aquatics instructors. The water component of the class provides lifelong safety and fitness skills in an environment where the hydrostatic pressure of the water provides participants with proprioception and spatial feedback outside of the visual and auditory spectrums. The land-based group session uses principles from Group Theraplay® that promote focused engagement, regulation, and relationship skills through active cooperative play with parents and peers.

Aquatics Personal Training Benefits of Private swim lessons Personal training is for everyone! Children can start as early as 6 months old. We offer private and semi-private lessons to meet your specific needs. A private swim lesson is one on one instruction. Private swim lessons are the most efficient way to learn how to swim. It’s also the least expensive in the long run because skills can be tailored to the individuals’ needs. Learning how to swim properly and smoothly is the route to one of the healthiest forms of exercise and important life skill. A semi-private lesson is two adults or children per instructor. Private lessons are offered 7 days per week. You can practice swimming at a time and day convenient for you. You can request a specific instructor. If your first instructor is not a perfect match, inform the Aquatics Director. He/she will find a more suitable instructor. Private lessons are perfect for individuals with special needs, in post rehab, or who are fearful of the water.

(RE) Reading

the Classics

Shakespeare is generally acknowledged to be one of the greatest writers in the history of the world, but what makes him such a great writer? After all, most of his plots are borrowed, his language is artificial-no one actually spoke in iambic pentameter verses-and his plays are full of bawdy puns. And yet he is indeed a great writer. In this class we will read five plays (Midsummer Night's

Dream, Romeo and Juliet,

Hamlet, Merchant of Venice,

The Tempest) and try to discover just what makes them so great that we still read and see them four hundred years after they were written. Facilitator: Dr. Theodore Steinberg (SUNY Fredonia)March 2-May 4 10:30am-12:00pm 16900$30, $25 w/member discount

FEB 4-FEB 28, 2016The night after their grandfather’s funeral, three cousins engage in a verbal (and sometimes physical) battle. In onecorner is Daphna Feygenbam, a “Real Jew” who is volatile, self-assured and unbending. In the other is her stubborncousin Liam, a secular and entitled man,who has his shiksa (not Jewish) girlfriend, Melody, in tow. Stuck in the middle is Liam’s brother, Jonah, who tries to stay out of the fray. When Liam stakes claim to their grandfather’s necklace, a vicious and hilarious brawl over family, faith and legacy ensues.Winner of Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play for 2013-14 Outer Critics Circle Award Nominations

Mar 31-apr 24, 2016Sid Silver is a man obsessed. When he learns about a young girl named Anne Frank and her extraordinary diary, Silver makes it his mission to ensure her tale is heard. But is the manuscript a work of art? A cultural treasure? Once publishers and producers get involved, it becomes “a very valuable product” - and his good intentions prove to be his undoing.“Fascinating…The puppets eloquently express one of the play’s major themes: how real life differs from stage life, how theater lies even when it tells the truth.” - NY Times.

Have you noticed

our new Logo?

As we're sure you have seen, we've started changing our look over the past few months!

We have started to adopt the JCC Association's National branding logo. The “J” stands for Jewish and also for JCC: the welcoming environment that transcends differences, creating an atmosphere where anything is possible. The logo is designed to look like a periodic table element. “Element J” is the strand of DNA that ties together everything we do.

We see it in our camps, our early childhood classrooms, our fitness centers - and beyond. In fact, it’s true of all the amazing array of offerings that comprise our JCC... “Element J” gives everything a special something!

Our JCCs are a hub of community engagement, and the center for Jewish life. The “J”s all around the United states have become destinations for people to live up to their inspirations and dreams. This is the internal concept at the heart of our brand.

Just add J.

The “J” connects all of the individual, unique communities and programs that we do together.
