DescriptionofOrchestraClasses:
TheJohnsCreekHighSchool"ChamberOrchestra"isthemostchallengingorchestraclasscomprisedmostlyofupperlevelstudents.Thestudentsareselectedthroughauditionsand/orwiththeapprovaloftheOrchestraDirector,withtheunderstandingthattherewillbeout-of-schoolperformancesandrehearsalsrequiredofallmembersduringtheschoolyear.Thecoursewillcoverthemechanicsofstringinstruments:notereading,rhythm,pitchdiscrimination,expression,andmusicliteracyatahigherlevel.StudentsreceiveonehourelectivecreditforallmusiccoursesTheJohnsCreekHighSchool"PhilharmoniaOrchestra"isaperformancegroupcomprisedof9ththrough12thgradestudents.Thestudentsareselectedthroughauditionsand/orwiththeapprovaloftheOrchestraDirector,withtheunderstandingthattherewillbeout-of-schoolperformancesandrehearsalsrequiredofallmembersduringtheschoolyear.Thecoursewillcoverthemechanicsofstringinstruments:notereading,rhythm,pitchdiscrimination,expression,andmusicliteracyatahigherlevel.Studentsreceiveonehourelectivecreditforallmusiccourses

TheJohnsCreekHighSchool"SinfoniaOrchestra"isaperformancegroupcomprisedof9ththrough12thgradestudents.Thestudentsareselectedthroughauditionsand/orwiththeapprovaloftheOrchestraDirector,withtheunderstandingthattherewillbeout-of-schoolperformancesandrehearsalsrequiredofallmembersduringtheschoolyear.Thecoursewillcoverthemechanicsofstringinstruments:notereading,rhythm,pitchdiscrimination,expression,andmusicliteracyatahigherlevel.Studentsreceiveonehourelectivecreditforallmusiccourses.AdditionalEnsembles:
JohnsCreekHighSchoolSymphonyOrchestra:Thisisafull-orchestrathatincludesstringstudentsfromChamber;selectstudentsfromPhilharmonia,winds,andpercussion.ThewindandpercussionstudentsinthisorchestraareagroupofselectedstudentsfromJCHSBandthroughauditionsand/orrecommendationfromtheDirector.TheJohnsCreekHighSchoolSymphonyOrchestrausuallyrehearsesonceaweekintheeveningsandsometimesduringclass.ChamberStrings:ChamberStringsisaselectedensemblethatcomprisesmembersoftheJohnsCreekHighSchoolOrchestrathatperformsinspecial,smallerensemblesettings.Thestudentsarechosenbasedontheirmusicalskills,dependability,andinstrumentation.ThemembersoftheChamberStringswillsometimesbeaskedtoperformatfunctionswithashortnotice;therefore,thestudentsmustbeflexible.FailuretocommunicateinatimelyfashionwiththeDirectorcanresultindismissalfromthiseliteensemble.OtherStringEnsembles(StringQuartet,etc…):Allstudentsareencouragedtoparticipateinsmallchamberensembles,suchasstringquartets,quintets,trios,etc....Thestudents'musicalunderstandingsandappreciationaboutthecomposersandtheirworkwillbemuchenhancedthroughtheperformingofchambermusic.Thestudentswillbenefitmuchbothmusicallyandsociallybyparticipatinginsmallensembles.Thestudentswillgenerallyrehearsebeforeand/orafterschool.MethodBooksThestudentswillbeexposedtomusicofallgenreandstyles.Inadditiontomanydifferenttypesofmusicthattheywillperforminclass,thestudentswillalsousesupplementalbooksthroughoutthecourseoftheyear,dependingontheirabilityandprogress.Listedbelowaresomeofthesupplementalbookswhichwillbeusedthroughoutthisyear:ExpressiveTechniquesforOrchestraAdvancedTechniquesforStringsEssentialElementsforStringsHarmonizedRhythmsCarlFleschScaleSystemReplacementofeachbookisabout$7.

TunerandMetronomeAllstudentsareencouragedtopurchaseapersonaltunerandmetronome.Thesedevicesarenecessaryduringpersonalpracticesathometoimprovehis/herperformance.“DailyRequiredMaterials”Allstudentsarerequiredtobringtheirinstrument,personalcopyofmusic,andpencilstoclass.Failuretobringtheseitemswillresultinloweringofthestudent’sgrade.
AllJohnsCreekHighSchoolOrchestrastudentsarerequiredtoprovidetheirownperformanceuniformanddressshoes.Theuniformneedstobeproperlyfittedandwornproperly.Anystudentnotproperlydressedwillnotbeallowedtoperformuntiltheproblemiscorrected.

RecoveryPolicy:Recoveryisforstudentswho,despiteaconscientiouseffortandcommunicationwiththeirteachers,havefailedtodemonstratesatisfactoryunderstandingofcoursegoalsasmeasuredbyasummativeassessmentorproject.Studentsmayinitiaterecoveryonsummativeassessmentsorprojectswhentheircumulativeaverageisa75orbelowanytimeafterthe6weekprogressreportandtheyhavemadealegitimateefforttomeetallcourserequirementsincludingattendance.Allassignmentsmustbecompletedbeforeastudenttakesarecoveryassessment.Studentswillberequiredtocompleterelevantassignmentsfortheunitandrequiredtoattendhelpsessionorcompletere-teachingactivitiesbeforetherecoveryassessmentisgiven.Theformatoftherecoveryassessmentmaybedifferentfromtheformatoftheoriginalassessment.Aftersuccessfulcompletionoftherecoveryassessment,theteachermayreplacetheoriginalassessmentgradewiththerecoveryassessmentgradeuptoan80.Thereplacementgrademaynotbelowerthantheoriginalassessmentgrade.Studentsmustinitiaterecoveryonasummativeassessmentorprojectwithin5schooldaysofbeinginformedofthegradeonthatassessment.Allrecoveryworkshouldbecompleted10daysbeforetheendofthesemester.Inthecaseofanhonorcodeviolationonasummativeassessmentorproject,theteachermayissueagradeofzerofortheassignment.Thisassignmentmaynotbemadeupnorwillthestudentbeeligibleforrecovery.HonorCodeAgainstAcademicDishonesty:(pg19-21inthestudenthandbook)IntegrityisaJohnsCreekHighSchoolcorevalue.JohnsCreekstudentsareexpectedtodemonstratehonestyandintegrityinallworksubmittedtoateacher.Thehonorcodeensuresthevalidityofstudentworkwhichguidesinstruction.AllJCHSstudentsareboundbytheJohnsCreekHonorCode.(Seepages19-21intheStudentHandbookformoredetailedexplanation.) Anorchestramember'ssemestergradewillbederivedfromrehearsalandperformanceattendance(35%),playingand/orwrittentests(20%),classroomparticipation(25%),finalexam(15%),andHomework(5%).GradingforFestival/LGPEpreparationduringthe2ndsemesterfortheAdvancedOrchestraclassesinvolveindividualcheck-offsoneachoftheselections.Thestudentsneedtoaccuratelyperform95%ofeachselectioninordertoparticipateintheFestival/LGPE--firstchair/standplayersat100%.TestingPlayingtests/quizzesandcheck-offswillbegivenregularlybytheDirector.Anumericalgradewillbeassignedaftereachquiz/test.WrittenandPlayingtestswillbegiventhroughoutthesemester.HomeworkThestudents’gradewillbeloweredwhenhomeworkisturnedinlate—onelettergradeloweredper/day.Allstudentsareresponsibleinlearningmusicandcompletingallwritten/oralhomework.Allstudentswillberesponsiblefornumberingthemeasuresinhis/hermusicwithin2daysofissuance.Thisisnottobedoneduringclass.ThesectionleaderswillcheckpartsandreportfailurestotheConcertmaster(mistress).
ORCHESTRAS (Sinfonia/Philharmonia/Chamber)

AttendancePoliciesforPerformanceandRehearsalOrchestramembersshallregardperformanceastheirprimarypurposeforbelongingtothisorganizationandshallmakeeverypossibleefforttobeinattendanceunlessthereisanemergencysituation.StudentsarerequiredtobepresentatallrehearsalsandperformancesinordertoreceivefullcreditandremainingoodstandingwiththeOrchestra.Situationsmayarisefornotattendinganorchestraactivity.StudentsshouldcontacttheDirectorwithanacceptablereasonpriortotheactivity(mustbeawrittennote-atleastonedayinadvance)toavoidanygradepenaltyandtobeeligibletoreceive“alternative”assignmentformakeup(forexcusedabsenceonly).Thestudentmustturninmakeupassignmentinatimelymannertoreceivecredit.Unexcusedabsenceswillnotbeallowedtomakeupwork.Examplesofunexcusedabsencesare:•Homework/classroomproject•Notransportation•Dentist/Orthodontistappointment•Attendingarockconcertorsportingevent•Birthdays•Work•Trips/vacationsApersonalillnessanddeathinthefamilyareconsideredemergencysituations.Inthiscase,awrittenexplanationshouldfollow(adoctor’snote,ifstudentisill).TheDirectorreservestherighttoexcuseornotexcuseeachabsencedependingonthesituationathand.Anabsencefromafinalrehearsalcouldresultinastudentnotbeingallowedtoperformwiththeorchestrafortheupcomingperformance(s).UnexcusedabsencefromapublicperformancecouldresultindismissalfromtheOrchestraand/orloweringofgrade(zero)andreceivingdemerits.DismissalTheDirectorreservestherighttoremoveastudentfromorganizationfor:-Anunexcusedabsencefromaperformance-UseofdrugoralcoholicbeverageswhilerepresentingtheOrchestraorJohnsCreekHighSchool-ContinuedfailuretodemonstrateacooperativebehaviorandattitudeParentsshallbenotifiedregardingabovecircumstancesfordismissal.Studentsdismissedfromperformingorganizationsshallcontinuetofunctionindailyclassuntiltheendofthesemester.He/shewillhavestudent/teacher“compromised”assignmentduringthattime.Agradewillbeassignedbasedonlyonclasswork/assignmentandparticipation.Trip-relatedInformationThestudentmaynotbeallowedtoparticipateonorchestratripsifthestudentfailstoadheretoanyoneofthefollowingJohnsCreekHighSchoolOrchestrarulesandexpectations.Someoftheseexpectationsinclude:

TardinesstoClass/Rehearsal:Studentsareexpectedtobeinclassbeforethebellrings.Thestudentsneedtounderstandthenatureofourclassinwhichmuchpreparation(suchastuning/warmingup,gettingmusic,instrument,etc….priortoactualclassinstruction)needstotakeplace.Tardinesswillnotbetoleratedinthisclass.ParentsareresponsibleofobtainingstudentattendanceviaParentConnect.Tardinesscancounttowardthelossofschoolprivilegesaswellasdeductiontowardsstudent'sclassroomparticipationgradeandmeritpoints.Thestudentmayalsobedemotedtolowerchair.StudentsmustalsoserveprivatedetentionsorreferralforSaturdaySchool,ISS,orformoresignificantactions(pg.15inthestudenthandbook).PleaseDoNotBeLatetoClass/Rehearsal!!!ClassroomParticipation:Studentsareexpectedtobeattentiveandrespectful.Thereshouldbenotalkingexceptbytheconductor.Ifstudentshaveanyquestions,theyshouldraisetheirhandandwaittobecalled.Theyshouldaddressallmajorquestionstotheconductorinsteadofdiscussingthingsamongthemselves.Foranyminorproblems(suchasbowing,etc….),theyshouldcheckitoutwithhis/hersectionleader.Whentheconductorworkswithonesection,anindividualoranyothersituationnotinvolvingyoupersonally,yourfocusofattentionshouldstillremainontheconductorbecausetheconceptsbeingtaughtmayalsodirectlyorindirectlyapplytoyouaswell.
Food,drinks,gum,etc…areabsolutelynotallowedinrehearsalroomandrehearsalareas(waterbottlewithcapisok).Cellphones,IPads,oranytypeofmobiledevicesarealsonotallowedduringrehearsals,unlessdirectedbytheDirector.Failuretocomplywiththeseruleswillresultinloweringofclassroomgrade,privileges,demerits,and/orfurtherdisciplinaryaction.
ChairAssignmentStudentswillbeassignedseatingandpartsintheirsectionaccordingtotheirdemonstratedplayingabilityduringauditions.Sectionleadersandassignedpartswillbedeterminedfollowingtheseauditions.Sectionleaderswillassistotherstudentsinlearningtheassignedmusic.OneoftheresponsibilitiesoftheConcertmasteristoleadandrepresenttheorchestra.TheConcertmasterofthe“Chamber”OrchestraisexpectedtoparticipateintheJCHSChamberStrings-relatedperformances.

Firststandsineachensembleshallmakeeveryefforttobeatallrehearsalsandbeintheirseatsbeforeeachrehearsalbegins.Thefirststandsshouldbeoneofthefirstpersonstolearnthemusic.Failuretolearnquickly,unabletoleadhis/hersectionwillresultindemotingtolowerseating.Suchchange,however,willnotnecessarilylowerstudent’sgrade.Allstudentsareexpectedtoprogressthroughindividual,dailypracticeSeatingAuditionsforChamber/Philharmonia/SinfoniaOrchestra(initialseatingauditionsONLY)Studentswillplaytwoassignedscalesandarpeggiosofthreeoctaves(twooctavesforstringbass),preparedexcerptgivenbythedirector,andsightreadingmusic.

Director'sOfficeStudentsshallentertheDirector'sofficeonlyforofficialbusiness.Thisareaisofflimitstostudentsexceptthoseengagedinworkormeetings(OrchestraLeadershipteam).Pleasedofeelfreetocomeintotheofficetoseekhelp/adviceordiscussions.Studentsarerequestednottointerruptduringconferences.RehearsalRooms(OrchestraRoom/OrchestraEnsembleRoom/Auditorium/BandRoom)Eachorchestramembershallassumetheresponsibilityofpickinghis/hermusic,instrument,books,clothing,etc.andstoringsuchitemsproperlyattheendofeachrehearsalorperformance.Anymusicand/oritemsleftinrehearsalroomandrehearsalareasmayresultinaloweringofstudentclassroomgradeand/ordemeritpoints.Nopersonalitemsshouldbeleftintherehearsalrooms.Theschoolwillnotberesponsibleforanypersonalitemsleftintheclassroom.Allequipment,includinginstruments,mustbestoredproperlyonshelves,lockers,andracks.Personalinstrumentsareexpectedtobetakenhomedailybystudents.Chairs,stands,equipmentintheorchestraroommustnotberemovedwithoutpermission.Onlyorchestra/musicstudentsareallowedintheorchestraroom.Computer/TV/TechnologyUsageJohnsCreekHighSchoolsupportstheuseoftechnologyforacademicpursuits.However,alltechnologymustbeturnedoffandputawayuponenteringclassroom.Computers,TV,Smartboard,printer,andMusicPlayersintheorchestraroomcanbeusedonlybyorchestrastudentsandonlywithpermission.StudentsarenottousethemwithoutMr.Kim’spermission.Whenusingthecomputers,youmustlogoutcompletelyuponfinishingyourtask.InstrumentStorageAllinstrumentsmustbeproperlystoredinassignedlockers/binsatalltimeswhennotinuse.Instrumentthatistoolargeforshelvingwillbeassignedinspecifiedstoragearea.Storagebins/lockersaretobekeptcleanandfreeoflitterandpersonalitems.Studentsareexpectedtotaketheirinstrumenthomedaily.Therefore,everystoragebinshouldbeemptyofpersonalitems,includinginstrumentsattheendofschoolday.LibraryThelibrarians/helperswillassiststudentswithallmusicneeds.Studentsotherthanthelibrarians/helpersarenotallowedtoremovemusicorreturnmusictolibraryfilingcabinets.Copierinthelibrary/practiceroomisofflimittostudents.Onlytheauthorizedlibrariansshouldbeallowedtouseit.LostMusicFinesEachorchestramembershallbeissuedwithmusic.StudentsnotreceivingissuedpartsshallimmediatelyinformaLibrarianinordertoobtainit.AllstudentsneedtohavetheirownpartsatALLrehearsals(NOTJUSTYOURSTANDPARTNER).
