Classes are held in conjunction with the Capital City Sailing Association. CCSA was founded in 2008 with a mission to promote the art of sailing, sportsmanship, and water safety. CCSA hosts weekend sailing and sailboat racing May through October. The Association welcomes sailors of all experience levels. Members are always looking for crew so there are plenty of oppor-tunities to get on the water. During the summer, CCSA hosts sailing events at Binder Lake several times a month. We also organize more structured events from time to time throughout the year. Check out events calendar at www.jcsailing.org or contact one of our members for more information. Adult Lessons: CCSA offers an introductory 3 session series to acquaint individuals with the basics of small sailboat handling. Enrollment is limited to individuals that are skilled in swimming and 15 years old or older. Participants should be able to swim and bring any custom life jacket needs, non-skid boat or water shoes, drinking water, a hat and sunscreen. For more info, contact Paul Rudder, CCSA Facilities Chairman, at 635-7995 or Parks & Recreation at 634-6482.

Showdown is a totally unique theater camp designed for teens, and led by working Hollywood professionals. We use the performing arts as a way for teens to wake up to who they are, discover who they can be, realize their personal power and change into the person they choose to become. This is an intensive, three week adventure into theater for 6th graders to 20 years old. It begins with morning classes where students study acting, directing, composing, stage movement, musical theater, dance, stage craft and playwriting. Afternoons are devoted to rehearsals for the full production. Cindy Marcus, Flip Kobler and Dennis Poore, from Los Ange-

les, are writing a new Totally Teen show for Jefferson City. The teams' other Totally Teen shows: BROTH-ER'S GRIMM, USHER, JECKYL AND HYDES, THE ARGONAUTS and NOT-TINGHAM have been published with Pioneer, the premiere house for young people's theater. Registration: February 3 - June 2

Visual Art Academy B y Ka t h l e e n

The classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the air-conditioned McClung Park Pavilion. Super-vision will be available at 8 a.m. and after class until 4 p.m. sharp. Each student needs to bring a brown bag lunch and drink. The students should wear clothes that art material will not harm. THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW… . .

Memorial Park Family Aquatic Center & Ellis-Porter/Riverside Pool

When inclement weather occurs, aquatic staff will remain at the pools and attempt to re-open the pools as soon as possible.

If patrons remain at the pool, and we are unable to re-open after 45 minutes, a pass will be issued for one free future ad-mission with proof of receipt. This policy is in effect until one hour prior to official closing.

For pool closing information, call the Parks and Recreation Hotline, 634-6485 and press #5.

Our lifeguards are highly trained and skilled. Their job is to assist in making our facilities a safe and enjoyable place to bring the family. However, they are not babysitters.

Parents are expected to watch their children and to assist in enforcing the policies for the safety and enjoyment of all patrons.

All children 8 YEARS OF AGE AND YOUNGER must be accompanied and supervised by a person 15 years of age or older. Our business is keeping your kids safe!

A Word To Parents.. .

During periods of extreme heat or high temperatures, staff will take 10 minute safety breaks throughout the day to clear the pool. Parks and Recreation is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Coin operated lockers are available at each facility. Paging of patrons is NOT permitted. It is the responsibility of pool patrons to make communicative arrangements prior to entering. Smoking is not permitted anywhere in the pool complex or parking lot. Any person suspec ted to be o r under the influence of alcohol or drugs will not be permitted into the facility. Some levels may be combined due to low enrollment.

QUAL ITY , CONVEN IENCE , AND FUN ! Through a cooperative agreement with the American Red Cross, morning and evening group lessons are offered for all ability levels, making it as convenient as possible for families with children of all ages. All instructors are American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors or Water Safety Instructor Aids. Eight lessons are scheduled during a two or four week period. A two week session runs Monday through Thursday for two weeks and a four week session runs (M/W or T/TH) for four weeks.

Parent Day for all classes will be the fourth day of lessons. Parents may participate in lessons on this day.

Students successfully completing the required skills will receive Red Cross certification. Repetition can be the key to learning. FACILITY RENTAL POLICIES 1. These rates apply to all individuals, businesses, and organizations. 2. Reservations are accepted first-come-first-served up to one year in advance. Inquiries may be made by telephone, but reservations

The balance of the rental amount and deposit are due sixty days prior to the rental date. If the full payment is not received by this time, the Department of Parks and Recreation will consider the reservation canceled and will rent the facility to another individual, business or organization, if requested. Reservations made less than sixty days in advance of use will be required to pay the full amount at the time the reservation is made.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

Jefferson City is home to an award winning Parks and Recreation Department. As the capital city of Missouri, maintaining our local parks and recreation facilities and implementing programs to meet the ever changing needs of our community and its visitors is a challenge. The Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Foundation strives to provide additional resources to leverage taxes, fees and grants to enhance our parks and recreation services. Over the years, civic minded individuals and organizations have maintained a tradition of enhancing the quality of life for their families, friends, and neighbors through generous donations to the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation system. In 1992, the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Foundation was formed to provide continuing leadership and foster the expansion of parks and recreation services in Jefferson City. The Foundation’s goal is to emphasize the value of parks and recreation - both passive and active - not only for individual growth and development, but also for a strong family unit and for making our community a more desirable place to live, work, play and visit. If you believe, as we do, that wholesome recreation pursuits make individuals more productive in their homes and communities and lead to a healthier and happier life, please commit your support to the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Foundation. Land, trees, fountains, benches, shelters, activity fees for youth programs are all gifts that can make a difference in people’s lives. Any and all size of gifts to our community are appreciated and contribute to the livability and quality of life of Jefferson City. For more information on how you can make a tax deductible contribution of land, money, or other gifts, please contact the Foundation’s Executive Director William Lockwood at 634-6482.

Jefferson City Parks & Recreation

Foundation As a recipient of federal funds from the U.S. Department of the Interior, the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Commission and the Jefferson City Department of Parks and Recreation operates programs subject to the non-discrimination requirements of Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Under Title VI, the U.S. Department of the Interior strictly prohibits discrimination because of race, color, or national origin in its federally assisted programs. Any person who believes he or she has been discriminated against in any program or facility of the Jefferson City Department of Parks and Recreation, or desires further information regarding Title VI, should write immediately to: The Office for Equal Opportunity U.S. Department of Interior Office of the Secretary Washington, D.C. 20240

Equal Opportunity

In any Parks and Recreation program, a participant who is bleeding or who has blood on his/her clothing shall be prohibited from participating further in the activity until appropriate treatment has been administered. Appropriate treatment may include bandaging as necessary to prevent recurrence. This policy has been implemented to protect the participants, coaches, staff, and their families from diseases transported through the accidental contact of tainted blood. If medical care is needed, the participant must leave the activity until the problem situation has been resolved. A 70% isopropyl alcohol solution must be used to disinfect the skin and clothing. All infected areas must be thoroughly cleaned before this individual is allowed to continue participating in the activity. This may require that the player remove affected clothing and replace it in order to be able to continue participating. All participants should bring an extra shirt, pair of pants/shorts, and socks to each activity to change into in the event a blood incident should occur.

The Parks and Recreation Commission believes that no youth should be denied access to Parks and Recreation programs for financial reasons. The Parks and Recreation Foundation makes recreation sponsorships available to those who otherwise would not be able to afford to participate in organized recreation activities. Those seeking sponsorships will be asked to complete a Recreation Sponsorship Application Form available through the Department of Parks and Recreation. Sponsorships are generally limited to those receiving benefits from a form of public assistance as designated on the application form. Sponsorship funding is limited to $200 per individual per calendar year and is restricted to ongoing programs conducted by Parks and Recreation staff. Specialized programs of short duration conducted by non-staff members (e.g. baseball clinics) are ineligible for sponsorship funding. All application forms requesting funding for youth programs must be signed by the parent/guardian of the prospective participant. Participants/parents must pay a minimum of 20% of the registration fee for programs for which sponsorship assistance is requested. Questions concerning this service may be directed to Phil Stiles at 634-6482.
