Tools Release 8.98 Updates

JD Edwards EnterpriseOne

Executive Summary

Thousands of organizations around the world rely on JD Edwards

EnterpriseOne applications for their daily business operations. Supporting

every JD Edwards EnterpriseOne installation is a JD Edwards

EnterpriseOne Tools release which delivers an efficient, independent,

secure and reliable platform for the application modules and the

supporting technologies (including databases, hardware, browsers and

operating systems) from Oracle and other technology companies. Since all

JD Edwards EnterpriseOne users interact with tools through every

transaction, every JD Edwards EnterpriseOne customer will derive

multiple business benefits from improvements to the Tools releases.

Oracle delivers new releases of JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools through

three release vehicles:

1. Major releases, such as Tools 8.98. Major releases are typically

delivered every 1-2 years.

2. Tools release updates, such as Tools 8.98.1. Tools release updates

are typically delivered every 6-12 months.

3. Maintenance packs, such as Tools 8.98.1.1. Tools Maintenance

packs are typically delivered every 1-2 months.

These Tools releases are designed to be “backward compatible”, meaning a

customer can apply a new Tools release without a corresponding

application upgrade. This allows customers to add value to their enterprise

applications without major changes to their business processes.

JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools 8.98 was

made Generally Available to customers in

September 2008. Tools release updates to

8.98 are delivered on a regular basis to

deliver an ongoing, easy to consume,

incremental stream of business value for JD

Edwards EnterpriseOne customers.

The focus of this document is on the Tools release updates for Tools

major release 8.98, specifically the business values that organizations can

realize by applying these updates. These Tools release updates, for

example 8.98 update 2 or 8.98.2.0, are important for JD Edwards

customers to understand for a number of reasons.

1. Tools release updates contain new product enhancements.

These new enhancements, such as a new reporting tool, are

typically optional for implementation when applying a Tools

update. However, when implemented these enhancements can

deliver a rapid time to value.

2. Tools release updates contain new platform choices. These

new supported platforms, such as a new operating system or web

portal platform, are typically optional for implementation when

applying a Tools update as you can continue to use your existing

platform choice.

3. Tools release updates contain improvements to existing

product capabilities which can be leveraged to more effectively

manage your enterprise applications – from the end user, to the

system administrator, to the developer. These new capabilities

make the existing system better, such as an improvement to

system performance. The new product capabilities include many

customer driven requests.

4. Tools release updates deliver currency with platform and

infrastructure components such as new versions of operating

systems, databases, application servers, and other technology

components. By moving to the latest Tools release update, you

can choose to leverage the advancements made in these platform

and infrastructure components.

5. Tools release updates are designed with quality in mind. They

contain the latest maintenance and go through rigorous quality

engineering prior to release. Since these updates are delivered on

a semiannual or annual basis, the product development schedule

can accommodate steps such as beta testing and testing on

multiple platform combinations.

Oracle’s Applications Unlimited program describes Oracle’s plan for

ongoing product enhancements and innovations. In September, 2008 JD

Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools release 8.98 delivered many such

enhancements and innovations in the areas of reporting, user experience,

and batch processing. The updates to Tools Release 8.98 continue this

momentum with similar enhancements that will provide immediate

business benefit to JD Edwards EnterpriseOne customers in every

Improvements to Existing Product Capabilities

(1) Data Access Driver (DAD)

Tools release 8.98 added a capability for handling data queries called

the Data Access Server (DAS). This provided a standards-based

approach to querying data stored in the JDE E1 database by

leveraging the JDBC (java database connectivity) standard. Using

DAS, a java client application can be connected to the JDE E1

database in a secure fashion.

For java server applications, such as Oracle BI Publisher, a revised

approach was required. Since server applications can have hundreds

or even thousands of simultaneous users, a revised solution is required

to address those scalability requirements. The Data Access Driver is

the solution for java server applications.

Purpose (1) General purpose data query interface to securely

access JDE E1 business data.

Benefit (1) Enforces data level security configuration, such

as row level security, set up in JDE E1 system

(2) Scalable for server types of applications such as

Oracle BI Publisher.

(3) Understanding of the JDE E1 proprietary data

types such as date / time formats.

(4) Standards-based approach enables DAD to be

used for a wide variety of purposes.

(2) Save JDE E1 report output to a file system

Business documents generated from the JDE E1 system are an asset

to your business. They represent correspondence with your customers,

agreements with partners, and many other types of business

documentation. JDE E1 has embedded Oracle’s BI Publisher report

Page 10: JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools Release 8.98 Updates ...nnf.questdirect.org/Downloads/JDE_E1_RVP_Tools_8... · Page ii JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools Release 8.98 Release Value Proposition

generation technology to improve the reports to be professional, pixel

perfect documents.

These documents are often requested by business users, whether it is

to get a copy of a customer invoice, a history of purchase orders, or

other business needs. This customer need drove an improvement to

the JD Edwards embedded BI Publisher capability to preserve the

report output generated by JDE E1.

Purpose (1) Save JDE E1 report output to a file system

Benefit (1) Report output is preserved for archival and

search purposes.

Release

level

JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools 8.98.1

(3) Controls on data selection for batch processing

One of the capabilities of the JDE E1 suite of applications is for end

users to request and execute reports. This puts the power of

requesting reports in the hands of end users, rather than requiring the

IT organization to run the reports.

However, if the end user removes or modifies the data selection

criteria upon submission of a report, an unexpected impact on the

overall system could potentially result. In this scenario, the report

could execute over a larger set of data than intended resulting in

unintended system performance degradation.

Purpose (1) Controls on end user’s ability to change report

data selection criteria.

Benefit (1) Predictable system performance by controlling

end user changes to report criteria that could

degrade overall system performance.

(2) Controls can be applied at the individual user,

role, or all user level for flexibility in how the

controls are applied.

(4) Application Query Security

Similar to the challenges outlined above in the section “Controls on

data selection for batch processing”, users are empowered to initiate

searches for business data through the JDE E1 interactive applications.

Users can request information by entering data in the header section

of the page and then pressing the Find button. Similarly, they can

enter information in the QBE (query by example) line or in the Data

Browser tool.

However, if the end user does not enter any criteria prior to requesting

the search, the result could be an unexpected impact to the overall

system potentially impacting other users. In this case, sometimes

referred to as a “wide open find”, the search could execute over a

larger set of data than intended resulting in unintended system

performance degradation.

Purpose (1) Controls on end user’s ability to initiate a wide

open find to the JDE E1 database

Benefit (1) Improved system performance

(2) Controls can be applied at an individual

application level for flexibility in where the

controls are applied.

(3) Individual users can be excluded if IT determines

there is a business need for a large search.

(5) Grid copy and paste support

The users of JD Edwards EnterpriseOne applications use many

personal productivity tools as part of their day to day activities such as

email, spreadsheets, and documentation applications. This ability to

copy information between the JDE E1 grid and an external

application can help increase the overall productivity of your end users.

Purpose (1) Enables users to use the familiar copy / paste

actions to copy information between JDE E1

Page 12: JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools Release 8.98 Updates ...nnf.questdirect.org/Downloads/JDE_E1_RVP_Tools_8... · Page ii JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools Release 8.98 Release Value Proposition

(6) Drag and drop grid columns

Users expect a dynamic user interface where they can configure the

size and order of columns to their liking. This feature allows the user

to drag and drop grid columns to re-order and resize the grid layout.

Purpose (1) Allows users to configure the order and the width

of columns in any JDE E1 application

interactively

Benefit (1) Users can visually see their grid customization

while it is being defined

(2) Users have the option to save the user setting as a

“Grid Format” along with previously created

formats

(7) Enhanced support for the Firefox browser

The usage of the Mozilla Firefox browser is rapidly increasing

amongst both consumer and business users. While organizations

often “lock down” the end user desktop in order to control the

applications and browser version that is used, this is not always

possible. For example, when an organization opens up access to their

system over the internet to their customers or suppliers, it is very

difficult to control which browser is used. Full support for the most

prevalent browsers in use is an important requirement.

Purpose (1) Enables the Firefox browser to be used with JDE

E1 applications that require import / export or

editing of text based attachments

Benefit (1) Users of both the Internet Explorer and Firefox

browsers have the same capabilities

(2) Option for organizations to turn off the use of

ActiveX, which can be a security risk

Release

level

(8) Enhanced embedded BI Publisher email delivery options

The embedded BI publisher support within JDE E1 improves the

embedded reporting capability to pixel perfect output, support for a

variety of output formats, and electronic delivery of the reports. Users

can create reports by utilizing familiar desktop tools. As the usage of

this reporting tool has expanded by customers, additional

requirements have arisen in the area of email delivery and language

support.

Purpose (1) Allow for a report specific email subject line and

body text with text substitution

(2) Leverage the user profile and other capabilities to

ensure that report is delivered in the end user’s

preferred language

(3) Option to consolidate output to recipients of

bursted reports

Benefit (1) Increased flexibility in electronically delivered

reports.

(2) Better quality delivery of reports

(3) Improved language output support

(9) Intuitive descriptions for query building using Data Access

Driver

The interactive BI publisher support for JDE E1 allows for the use of

Oracle BI Publisher to author, publish, and execute reports that use

JDE E1 as a data source. End users can design their own reports and

modify them as required using the powerful BI Publisher Enterprise

Edition reporting product. To simplify the task of end users creating

reports, intuitive descriptions are now available for the table and

column names while building the query in BI Publisher. Also,

descriptions related to a User Defined Code (UDC) can be

automatically retrieved with the query results.

Purpose (1) Simplify the end user reporting task of creating a

data query.

(2) Simplify the end user reporting task of retrieving

descriptive text for codes

Benefit (1) When selecting a table or view for a query, users

will see a description such as “Customer Ledger”

rather than a table name such as F03B11

(2) When selecting columns to include in the query,

users will see a description of the column in their

preferred language

(3) No additional database table join is required to

retrieve a description related to a UDC.

(10) Workflow Approval Delegation and Task Re-assignment

The JDE E1 workflow engine can be a powerful tool for coordinating

actions in the system across multiple systems and users. One key use

case is in the approval of transactions such as expense approval or

requisition approval. In these processes, one or more users can be

configured to approve transactions prior to those transactions being

released for processing. In the case of a user not approving a

transaction in a prescribed amount of time, the system can be

configured to escalate that approval to another user. However, in the

case where the primary approver is out of the office or has left the

company, there previously has not been an easy way to delegate the

approval step or reassign pending approvals.

Purpose (1) Allow end users to delegate the approval of

existing or future approvals for any JDE E1

workflow. This includes the approvals that are

generated from the JDE E1 Expense

Management and Requisition Self Service

applications.

Benefit (1) System administrators control the list of users

an approver can delegate approval authority

(2) Allows users to route and re-assign workflow

tasks to an approved delegate.

(3) End users can set a date range for new

approval requests to be automatically routed

to a delegate for approval

(4) Simplifies approvals for employee vacations,

termination scenarios, and manager delegation

(5) Automatically routes tasks to Delegate when

the Primary Approver is unavailable

(11) Deploy update packages without system downtime

The package build process is a key component of the change

management system that is built into the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne

architecture. This process allows an IT organization to control the

version of the application that is deployed to a test, production or

other environment. It is typical for an organization to deploy a weekly

or monthly “update” package in order to deploy modifications to

reports and other maintenance. Not requiring all users and batch

processes to cease processing in order to deploy an update package

can enable organization to run a 7x24 operation along with a

simplified process for your IT staff.

Purpose (1) Allow update packages that contain only UBE

and APPL changes to deploy without stopping

batch processing

Benefit (1) Simplified change management process. The

JDE E1 package deployment process will deploy

update packages without the need to lock batch

queues.

(1) 24 x7 operations support for commonly

deployed update packages

(12) Server Manager support of clustered HTML application

servers

The JDE E1 HTML application server tier (aka JAS) can be set up in a

horizontal or vertical cluster configuration. A horizontal cluster will

manage user activity across multiple physical servers, while a vertical

cluster will add additional capacity within a physical server. When

these servers are clustered, it becomes important to manage the cluster

as a single unit while still having the visibility at the individual node

level.

Purpose (1) Improve Server Manager to manage a horizontal

or vertical cluster of JDE E1 HTML servers

(2) Resource Management in Server Manager

In enterprise architecture such as JDE E1, system resources such as

CPU processing power and memory are shared across many users. A

properly sized and configured system to meet the expected needs of

these users results in a high performance and stable platform for your

enterprise applications.

But, what happens when something doesn’t go to plan? An

improperly configured system, a product defect, a bad customization,

or a third party product could all be reasons that these important

system resources get consumed resulting in a performance degradation,

or even worse, a system outage.

A set of resource management utilities is delivered to provide insight

and diagnostics into the memory and CPU usage of the JDE E1

system. This enables system administrators to quickly identify processes with high resource consumption and reclaim those system

resources to ensure system stability. It also decreases the time

required for developers to identify the root cause of resource

consumption issues.

Purpose (1) Provide system administrators insight into how

the system resources are being used.

(2) Enable system administrators to reclaim those

Page 20: JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools Release 8.98 Updates ...nnf.questdirect.org/Downloads/JDE_E1_RVP_Tools_8... · Page ii JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools Release 8.98 Release Value Proposition

system resources to ensure system stability.

(3) Quickly capture the required information to send

to Oracle or developers to resolve the root cause

of the issue.

Benefits (1) Improved satisfaction through increased system

uptime, improved software quality, and reduced

time to resolve application issues.

(2) No impact to production systems, removes need

to reproduce problems in a testing environment.

(3) Reduce the time it takes to obtain the required

information for problem resolution from

day/weeks to minutes/hours.

(4) Decrease the churn between customers and

Oracle support by capturing the necessary

diagnostics earlier in the support process.

(3) Design time and runtime support for embedded Oracle

Business Intelligence (OBI) reports

Having the right information at the right time can sound cliché, but is

very applicable to enterprise applications. If end users have the

information required to make the best decision on a transaction, such

as whether to increase a customer’s credit limit, they can increase their

productivity and make the best business decisions.

By combining the JDE E1 transaction screens with business

intelligence reports, this goal is accomplished. End users can see the

business intelligence report on the same screen as they are processing

a transaction. This report is delivered in context of the transaction

they are working on. So, if they are looking at a specific customer

invoice, they can see business intelligence about that customer, similar

customers, or other related intelligence.

Purpose (1) Include OBI reports in JD Edwards transaction

page.

(5) Related Information Application Framework for

WebCenter Spaces

Advancements in collaboration technologies such as discussion

forums, group calendars, and wikis are delivering powerful tools to

end users. These tools allow an expansion of the user community that

can collaborate online to more efficiently solve their business

problems. Using collaboration technologies, often referred to as web

2.0, users across the organization can more effectively communicate

when interacting with customers, managing corporate assets, closing a

fiscal quarter, or any other business process.

The Related Information Application Framework for WebCenter

Spaces feature allows organizations to combine any JDE E1

transaction screen with one or more related WebCenter collaborative

workspace. End users can quickly access the workspace that is related

to the JDE E1 transaction that they are working on. For example, a

user may see a workspace for a specific premium level customer when

they view that customer’s address book record, a sales order from that

customer, or other transactions related to the customer. They can

then quickly refer to the workspace to understand related activity to

that customer so they can make the best business decision in the JDE

E1 transaction system.

Purpose (1) Integrates the JDE E1 Web client interface with

Oracle’s WebCenter Spaces (web 2.0)

(2) Link JDE E1 applications to workspaces based

upon transaction context

(3) Links are defined by End Users or System

Administrator by application.

(4) Option to create or link to existing Group Space.

Benefits (1) Improves end user collaboration and decision

making

(2) Improved productivity of your JDE E1 users.

(3) No custom development required.
