Rapid prototyping
• is a machine that used to create a model that designed by using 3D computer aided design (CAD) data.
• The first machine of rapid prototyping hit the markets in the late 1980s.
• in its earlier days was applied to produc=on of models and prototype parts. But nowadays with the advancement in technology, rapid prototyping is used widely for many applica=ons.
Rapid Prototyping machine used in Jewelry
There are many companies out there that developed Rp machine for jewelry fabrica=on. However, I will specifically talk about two most common brands and types that use in the jewelry field these days. I’m not including the CNC machine here because in my opinion the machine does not work fast enough to use the word ‘rapid’!
2 types of the RP machine in focus… •3D prin=ng from solid scape; an inkjet printer that using hot wax instead of
using ink building a model in 3D.
•Stereolithography from envision; Uses a light-‐sensi=ve liquid polymer.
“ Model making process from solidscape ”
• Transfer the finished design in STL file that created from CAD to the machine
• Set up the file in a sodware called Modelworks that come with the machine
• the machine will apply the wax layer by layer to create 3D models by prin=ng the suppor=ng surface in the pink wax and the real model in the blue wax.
• Take the plate with the completed models to the hot plate so you can remove the model out.
• Then place the pieces into a cleaning solu=on to clean off pink base wax and dry the pieces to get ready to be cast or making a mold out of it.
“ Model making process from Envision ”
• This machine builds the model up-‐side-‐down by laser one layer at the =me crea=ng interior and exterior feature including support and sprue.
• Clean the finished pieces in a cleaning solu=on and the piece will ready to be direct cast or make a mold
Machines overall
• These machines make the jewelers’ lives easier. We can see the 3D model from the CAD program and then transfer the file to the RP machine, here the process called WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) takes place wherein the final product is same as the image created.
• The materials in use are non-‐toxic thermoplas=c for the solidscape and photopolymer for envisiontec which is featuring lost wax cas=ng: fast melt out, no ash or residue ; this make the process free from porosity and no thremal expansion.
• Such a machine makes no more =me consuming for carving wax
Machines overall
• To decrease the waste of wax or metal and also decrease the development =me by allowing correc=ons to a product to be made early in the process when the model s=ll be a STL file.
• Increasing product complexity; designers can be more crea=ve as the computer program lead them. Unlike CNC machine that have a tool limita=on that can not carve a hallow form and too complex shape.
• To Provide clean smooth surface of the prototype and also precise with out lower the speed.
Machines overall
• Decreasing delivery =me; 3D prin=ng machine and stereolithography (digital wax) works a lot faster and making more pieces in the same period of =me compare to CNC machine.
Sustainability and environment impact
• Non-‐toxic thermoplas=c composites will not harm the environment where they are placed. Unlike other materials that release chemicals over =me
• Thermoplas=c is a polymer that can remelted and remolded many =mes.
• Liquid-‐Photopolymer releases 26% CFC-‐11 equivalents ( ozone deple=on factor)
• Liquid-‐Photopolymeris a water-‐base so no chemical that harm the environment.
The use of RP machine in general
The use of other types of rapid prototyping in many applica=ons
Future predic=on for the machine in Jewelry fabrica=on
• Be more faster and more precise • Bigger in size that could make the bigger piece and more pieces at the same =me
• Become a main tool for the jewelry produc=on
• No Need to store too many metal models
