The Free Cloud Alliance (FCA) is a non profit organization which members are

software publishers in the field of open source cloud computing. FCA activities

include dissemination of Open Source Cloud Computing knowledge, Open Source

Cloud Computing Research. FCA members believe in Software Freedom and in

Information Freedom.

FCA Members are Demotera, IEOLO, Linbit, Mandriva, Nexedi and TioLive. FCA

members operate in Austria, Brazil, France, Japan, Sénégal and Austria.

Most solutions of FCA members are production ready and designed based on

customer requirements.

For example, AtikTeam software by Demotera is a SaaS service which provides

online project management. It is used by 300 companies including universities such

as ParisTech or government agencies such as DREAL PACA.

Sadly, AtikTeam is not yet available in English. Demotera hopes that the Free Cloud

Alliance will help AtikTeam to become international. So, if someone wants to start a

SaaS business arround project management, write to [email protected].

This is the power of Open Source Cloud: everyone is Free to reuse our solutions and

compete with our members.

TioLive ERP/CRM has more than 8,000 companies registered. IELO hosts the largest

provider of adult video in Europe.

And, Linbit, a new member of FCA, recently got its technology accepted in Linux

kernel. Congratulation!

Some solutions of FCA have been released recently and start to be used in

production. This is the case of NEO storage server by Nexedi and XtreemFS created

by Zuse Institute Berlin and which is commercialy supported by Mandriva.

FCA also welcomes solutions which are “technology preview” such as SLAPGRID

whenever they contribute to major scientific advances in Cloud Computing.

FCA has a web site: www.freecloudalliance.org

This web site provides information about open source cloud computing solution

thanks to an online catalog. You can find there solutions of FCA members but also

solutions from other providers and alliances. For example, Java technologies

provided by OW2 consortium are listed in the catalog. Fee free to contribute to it.

FCA provides guidelines to assess Cloud Computing solutions and Cloud Computing

vendors.

Our guideline on Cloud revertability can be used to assess whether a Cloud

Computing provider gives you access to all the information which a company needs

to “escape” from a Cloud Computing provider, and thus to reduce risks of lock-in. It

is based on the “TIO Libre” (tio.ffii.org) definition created in 2008 by a group of

experts of FFII. In short, if you subscribe to a service, can you get back your data

including access logs (Data Freedom), get back the source code which you need to

run the same application (Software Freefom) and ask a different provider to host it

(Competition Freedom).

FFII was for example the leader of the successful campaign in Europe to prevent

software patents from stiffling innovation. FFII won at the European Parliament

against the largest proprietary companies. So, if FFII approves “TIO Libre”

guidelines, it really means that those guidelines protect you against anti-

competitive lock-ins.

FCA also provides an guideline to assess your favourite open source vendor and

make sure that he really believes in open source for himself as much as he tells you

he does for what he sells to you.

Latest News

● 300 concurrent users

● Linbit joins FCA● Demotera joins FCA

www.freecloudalliance.org/news

FCA web site also has some news. So, please subscribe to it through RSS for

example.

Among recent news, TioLive, an FCA member, just succeeded the implementation of

the largest customer support application in Ireland for the M50 highway. With 300

concurrent users and millions of documents or transactions, it is the proof tha open

source Cloud can be used in the Enterprise for mission critical applications in the

field of ERP or CRM.

Other news: Linbit has joined FCA. This is a great news. It also shows the diversity of

FCA in terms of solutions: python based, ruby based, java based and.... plain C

based. FCA has no religion on languages and technologies as long as they work.

Other news: Demotera with Atikteam. It is really a great SaaS for project

management. Many users of proprietary project mengement SaaS should have a

look at it. I even found recently that the sofyware which Atikteam is based on,

Redmine, is being used by Airbus.

FCA Storage Solutions

XS2 POSIX Storageglobal

BS2 Block Storagehigh performance

NS2 Object Storagetransactional

Let us go into some detail about FCA solutions.

Storage is one of the most important point in Cloud. There is a theorem in computer

science, the CAP theorem, which says that you can not get everything at once in a

storage solution: availability, consistency and partitioning. This is why FCA has

diverse solutions, since to universal solution can exist.

XtreemFS is a good solution to spread files all over the world with a unique POSIX

interface. It supports network disconnection. It supports Linux and Windows.

Mandriva, supports commercial implementations of XtreemFS.

Linbit DRBD is a great way to build a high performance redundant storage server.

IEOLO uses DRBD as one of the storage backend component in NiftyName, so that

storages are replicated on the same site and on different sites. Consider DRBD as

the equivalent of a software SAN at the core of Linux kernel.

Nexedi's NEO is a transactional distributed storage system. Compared to XtreemFS,

it provides transactions and consistency but can not (yet) be used very efficiently

over wide area networks.

FCA PaaS General Purpose

3 days customizationAll Through The Web

TioLive, a general purpose PaaS part of FCA solutions, can be used to create SaaS

services very quickly. TioLive includes all the standard design patterns and business

workflows of an ERP or a CRM. It also includes a skinning engine and a gadget

engine.

Creating a custom application can be achieved entirely through the Web by

configuring dialogs, workflows and adding scripts. In the above example, the

standard TioLive was customized by a group of bachelor students in 3 days to

cerate a CRM application which was inspired by a famous CRM SaaS.

So, if bachelor students can create in 3 days such an application “All Through The

Web”, it means that TioLive can be also used to provide to all divisions and

subsidiaries of large company a consistent, a Web based environment, which they

can user for ERP, for CRM, for business applications and which they quickly

customize to their local needs.

Demo 1: NiftyName

http://www.niftyname.org/doc/zigui-video-tutorial/

Let us now have a look at our first demo.

We will show you how to create a virtual machine, a virtual storage and a virtual

network. What is great with NiftyName is its performance, and its simplicity. Source

code of NiftyName is only a few thousand lines. But you'll see, it does so much. And

the performance is definitely the best on the market with true redundancy of

storage, network and virtual machines, as well as with support of hybrid clouds

consisting of a combination of hardware servers and virtual machines.

Demo 2: SLAPGRID

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xd7fy8_tiolive-grid-demo_tech

Let us have a look at our second demo. This could be the future of the Cloud:

decentralized.

You'll see in this video that we could all become in the very close future cloud

computing providers by connecting a server at home. Distributed Cloud Computing

combines economies of scale typical of Cloud environments and cancels the Law of

diminishing returns.

In short, it is as cheap to manage, but much cheaper for electricity, cooling,

location, network. And it can resist much better to incidents because it is really

distributed in thousands of houses or micro-datacenters.
