DIRECTOR’S NOTESMARK DUMEZ

A novelist acquaintance, who wrote about small towns and their characters, once voiced a concern that small towns may be running out of eccentrics. He feared that distinctive individual traits were being muted by a broader cultural homogeny. While this is a good topic for a CBC or BBC investigation – it made me think about P.G. Wodehouse and the delightful eccentricities and eccentrics of Vancouver Island – my home for over a decade. Wodehouse’s characters in print are daft, whimsical and wonderfully unique. He draws them with care and lightness of being. It’s no wonder “Ask Jeeves” and other tributes have emerged. His eccentrics follow their bliss in the company of community and create verve and joy. While these samecharacters are fraught with confusion, petty power struggles and verbose extremes – at centre is the calm, assuring and

benevolent valet – Jeeves. Around this black-suited sun the daffy planets of his universe orbit and whirl. Wodehouse affirms in us the delight of extremes, the love of unique details and thehonourable silliness that can emerge from our shallow as well as deep

ongings – from romance to poetry to newts. I am thankful to be able to work with such dedicated artists and craftspeople torealize his vision and produce it for you in this show. Enjoy the ride on the bumpy back roads of Brinkley Court’s eccentric delights – right here on stage in Chemainus!

Mark is a proud resident of Vancouver Island and has enjoyed directing A Pretty Girl (A Shayna Maidel), Delicious Lies, Harvest, The 39 Steps and Amadeus for Chemainus Theatre Festival. Other favourites include: A Christmas Carol, Strindberg’s Easter, Anne, Mr. Pim Passes By and Pet the Fish. He hascollaborated with companies including Theatre X, Pacific Theatre and TheatreOne in development of over a dozen new plays. Favourite acting credits include: Mass Appeal, Enchanted April, Queen Milli of Galt and Streetcar Named Desire.

BRIAN BALL Set Designer

Brian Ball is a BC based artist and designer. Born in Newfoundland, he completed his BFA in Visual Arts at Memorial University where he also fell in love with the world of Theatre. After completing his MFA in Theatre design at UVIC, he moved to Vancouver to work in both Theatre and the Film industry. Brian teaches design part time at VIU (Nanaimo) and has upcoming shows with TheatreOne, T.U.T.S. and the Gros Morne Theatre Festival (Newfoundland).

ROBIN BOXWELL Sound Designer

Robin is pleased to be joining Chemainus Theatre once again. Robin’s previous shows include All Shook Up and Fiddler on the Roof. Robin is currently the Technical Director atVancouver Island University’s Malaspina Theatre. Someupcoming shows will include Sound Designer for T.U.T.S., Legally Blonde and Shrek the Musical, as well as taking on the role of Production Manager with TheatreOne’s production of Doubt. Enjoy the show!

KELLEY CHEETHAM Apprentice Stage Manager

Kelley is pleased to return to Chemainus for her fourthproduction, having previously apprentice stage managed Amadeus, All Shook Up and most recently, It’s a Wonderful Life. Other previous productions include: Red, The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood (Alberta Theatre Projects), The Ends of the Earth (Vertigo Mystery Theatre), It’s a Wonderful Life (Arts Club) and Pride and Prejudice (Theatre Calgary). She is a graduate of Mount Royal University.

BERNARD CUFFLING Jeeves

Bernard is a regular ‘visitor’ to The Chemainus Theatre, either as an actor or director. Some past productions he has beeninvolved in are: Dracula, The Woman in Black, Amadeus and Hay Fever. Bernard has recently hosted an evening of music with Shakespeare as the theme with Clyde Mitchell and the North Shore Orchestra. Straight after playing Jeeves he returns to Vancouver and will be part of Bard on the Beach’s 25th anniversary celebrations. He will appear in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Tempest.

MARK EUGSTER Lighting Designer

Mark is a graduate of the University of Victoria’s BFA theatre program. Always on the move, he is fascinated by the art of production and is continually working on new projects to develop a diverse perspective of the possibilities of live entertainment. He is a technical director, lighting designer, and production manager. Recently he has worked with SFU Woodward’s, the SB Dance Centre, Chemainus Theatre Festival, and Pacific Opera Victoria.

IAN FARTHING Thomas Travers / Anatole

Ian is pleased to be returning to Chemainus where he last appeared in A Christmas Carol. His favourite theatre credits include: South Pacific and Cinderella (London); The Sound of Music (Toronto); Cabaret, The Mousetrap & Shear Madness (Arts Club); Lettice and Lovage, The Foreigner and The Glass Menagerie (Pacific Theatre); and Company (WaterfrontTheatre). Ian is also Artistic Director of the St. Lawrence Shakespeare Festival in Prescott, ON.

LINDA GORANSON Dahlia TraversLinda is thrilled to be at Chemainus for the first time. Recent theatre credits include: The Cemetery Club, Perfect Wedding, The Little Years, The Mousetrap, Tough Case (nominated for a Dora for best production), Calendar Girls, On Golden Pond, Vigil. Extensive film and TV includes: Remedy, Hemlock Grove, Owning Mahowny, The Rowdyman. She starred in The Painted Door which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Live Action Short. She trained at LAMDA.

LEIGH KERR Stage Manager

Leigh Kerr is a production manager, stage manager andphotographer who has recently moved to Vancouver. She brings with her a wealth of experience in the Canadian theatre scene after working across the country with companies such as the Shaw Festival, Blyth Festival, Banff Centre and Manitoba Theatre for Young People over the past twenty years. Leigh is thrilled to have finally made it to the island and work with Chemainus Theatre.

MICHELLE LIEFFERTZ Costume Designer

Delighted to delve into Wodehouse’s world with this marvelous team, Michelle’s previous design credits include: Munsch to Say, Animal Tales, Pirate Tales, Munsch Ado About Nothing, Rumpilstiltskin, Snow White, Macbeth, Little Red Riding Hood & the Three Pigs (Chemainus Theatre Festival); A Farndale Christmas Carol (TWU). JESSE MARTYN Augustus Fink-Nottle

Jesse’s right chuffed to be back in Chemainus for a fourth time after Singin’ In The Rain, Gifts of the Magi, and Joseph. He recently ambled about as Slim in Hardline Productions’ Vancouver smash, Of Mice and Men. Favourites elsewhere include: The Stepmother (North American Premiere/ShawFestival) and In Flanders Fields (World Premiere/SmileTheatre). Follow @JesseMartyn or jessemartyn.com.
