    A New Opportunity to Serveby Capt P.D. Sargent

    As Jeffco Squadron continuously prepares to respond to emergencies, numerous REDCAPS ca#edus to the fore in 2009. We continued to hone our ski# s with SAREXs, we trained minds andexpended understanding by taking in-house classes like MSA, Observer and Scanner, and Radio A

    and B Cut. We also took wing and national leadership classes like SLS, CLC, NESA, RMRSC,GSAR, the FEMA 100-800 ICS series, and Mountain Flying Clinic as we#as the AFIADLprofessional courses. Our pilots flew cadetsboth AFROTC and CAP Orientation Ridesand

    we a#studied and practiced safety measures both on missions and in private life. We upgraded oursquadron office, cleaned out the hangar, repainted safety lines, exce#ed in the SUI procedure andthe Evaluated SAREX. 2009 was a year of professional growth and personal pride. Last but not

    least, we welcomed a new squadron commander and a new administrative structure. Asvolunteers, 77 strong, we represent a cross section of our communities, which we serve. As CAP members, we prize the core values: Integrity, Volunteer service to humanity, Exce#ence, andRespect. We do this in the spirit of camaraderie with other strong and dedicated people Ed.

    Leadership is a serious responsibility.     Our January meeting was held on the sameday that US Airways Flight 1549 ditched in theHudson. We talked about the heroic event as well as other recent events in the world ofAerospace.

    Februarys speaker was Mr. Sam Rogge, acrop duster from Fowler. In the Civil AirPatrol, we think of our work as often involvingflying low and slow. Sam spoke with us aboutwhat that really means as a crop dusting pilot.From the what- ifs to the science of

    application to security issues, Mr. Roggedelivered an outstanding discussion of his job.

    Marchwas a presentation on CAPs AerospaceEducation Program for Senior Members(AESPM), better known as the Yeager Award.Also discussed was a brief introduction to theAerospace Education Specialty track.

    Aprilwas the Change of Command, the WingConference, the advent of Narrow Band radioreprogramming, and the tragic news of Sparky

    Imesons fatal plane crash.

    The Ma y meeting was assisted by ourhosts,Western Air Flight Academy, as theyshowed us how their crosswind trainers canmake us better, safer pilots by using technologyto recreate some hairy landing simulationsallwithout ever having to leave the ground.

    When June came, the squadron was given aspecial treat. Flight For Life, a prominentDenver area air ambulance service, brought a

    pilot, a nurse, a paramedic, and an activehelicopter to show how they perform their day-to-day lifesaving operations. Squadronmembers were able to poke around thehelicopter and ask the crew all about what theydo.

    The Flight for Lifes business is notablydangerous, but we let Julys meeting topicserve as a stark reminder of the importance ofsafety. With so many members of the Jeffcosquadron as pilots, its important to remindourselves of just how dangerous these machinescan be. We talked about aviation legends whodied doing what they love, including focusingon the recently deceased Steve Fossett.

    Rocky Mountain Metro Airport sponsored itsannual air show and fly- in in August .

    Thousands of aviation enthusiasts broughttheir parents, neighbors, children and theirdogs to watch the aerobatics, examine theinterior of the biggest planes, and take theirchildren to the popular play center.

    The previous current events presentation wentover pretty well, so we did another one inSeptember. We talked about interestingdevelopments in the commercialization ofspace and a potential new fuel replacement for100LL. We congratulated 2Lt Farida Burnham

    who became a naturalized citizen.

    In October, we added a little levity to ourpresentation by talking about safety andportrayal of aviation in the media by watchinga short clip of the film, Airplane. Othermembers of the wing and I attended theCosmophere, a space museum in Hutchison,Kansas.

    November hosted our last speaker of the year,

    Mr. Robby Cline, an employee of the U.S.Forest Services Jeffco Air Tanker base. Mr.Cline talked about what they do on the otherside of the airport to keep forest fires fromburning out of control.

    In December our families joined us to helpcelebrate Christmas at dinner at CB & Potts.

    Emergency Services Highlights

    by Lt Col John Butler

    Dedicated volunteers keep their ski#s honed, and 2009 was heavy on thetraining. To serve without training is ineffectual. Jeffco squadron is fi#ed with dedicated, we#-trained volunteer professionals. Ed.

    Responding to over seventy non-distressELT alarms, Colorado Wing flew 3432hours in 2009.

    Two members, 1Lt Jeremy Sing and CaptTricia Sargent, completed the SLS training

    in Marchin Boulder.

    In May, two members, 1Lt Todd Gamberand Capt Jason Rew, completed a NationalEmergency Services Academy, NESA,training at Camp Atterbury in Edinburgh,Indiana.

    The USAF rated the Colorado WingExcellent at the Evaluated SAREX heldJuly20-25 at GXY. Seventeen Jeffco staff

    members participated.

    Your PAO also completed the RockyMountain Region StaffCollege July9-26.

    National Civil Air Patrol delivered a newG-1000 182 glass cockpit airplane toColorado Wing. The plane, assigned toJeffco squadron, is stationed in hangar #51.We conducted a two week-end training forpilots and observers in the new aircraft.

    Four new members joined Jeffco squadron.We welcome SM Chuck Dickerson, SMJonathan Thorpe, SM Luc Moens, and SM Joe Dunigan who are training as missionscanners and mission staffassistants.

    One new mission pilot, Capt Scott Tippett,completed his training and is now a missionmountain pilot. At Gunnison, forty-fivepilots completed training at the MountainFlying Clinic August 14-16.

    Six members, Capt Jason Rew, 1Lt JeremySing, Capt Jennifer Kauffman, 1Lt MikeLinn, Lt Col Dick Sargent, and Capt TriciaSargent completed the CLC training inOctober. Col Randy Carlson was director.

    As we enter a new year, we enjoy the sense ofrenewal that comes with the new promises wemake to ourselves. New Years resolutionsexpress a desire to get out of the old rut, andgive a voice to our need to reinvigorate our livestoward new beginnings.

    However, as powerful as the promises may be,the realities of our busy world can quickly wreak havoc with the best intentions. Justthink about all the broken promises aboutgetting back in shape, losing weight or gettingout of debt. Im sure all of us have been guiltyat some point in our lives of not fulfillingcertain promises we made to ourselves. It begsthe question, How we can prevent the changeof heart that gradually leads todiscouragement, or worse, mediocrity that can

    infect all areas of our lives?

    The answer lies in taking charge of our lives bysetting strong and ambitious goals that, in turn,will lead to the achievement of a bigger visionfor our future. The act of striving toward goalsmakes all the difference between leading aninspired life versus living a dull life of justhanging in there. Active goal-setting revolvesaround mental images that, when vivid enough,stimulate a person into action. For instance,think back to the time that you dreamed about

    becoming a pilot, or other aspirations that nowhave become a reality in your life.To maintain a well-balanced life, we needfulfillment and tangible achievements in allareas of our life, i.e., relationships, physicalhealth and fitness, professional career, finances,and our personal and spiritual development.Setting goals in each of these areas requiressome time, effort, and considerable soul

    searching, but the end result is a sense of self-confidence that makes l i fe seem lessoverwhelming, and most importantly, morepurpose-driven.

    The process of goal-setting consists of a few

    simple steps that can be applied to all areas inour lives, regardless of who we are or what ourchallenges are.

    1) Begin by establishing some quiet time everyday when you can allow yourself to mentallydesign your future, and ask yourself whatyou really want to achieve in your life. Manysuccessful people make it a habit to do thiskind of meditation early in the morning orjust before bed time. They often use the trickof writing the eulogy for their own funeral,

    which forces them to focus on what theyreally want.

    2) Based on that vision, develop a clear plan ofaction by setting goals that are attainable.Make sure that these goals are bothchallenging and realistic enough to maintain your motivation. It may require that youlearn new skills, or get advice from a mentor.

    3) Write down a target date by which you willreach your desired goals.

    4)Finally, review your goal sheet every day sothat your mind stays focused on your goal(s).

    As you go through this process, you will slowlybecome more aware of resources andopportunities that will assist you in reaching your goals. You wil l see yourself movingforward in a new direction--out of the rut--withgoals in mind that will enrich your life!

    Light the Fuse of Inspiration

    Janus was the mythical Roman god of gates and doors, beginnings and endings. He is the father of thefirst month of the year. This old god once adorned the door lintels of houses. Janus looks back on thepast and forward to the future. New Years resolutions are designed to do just that. To make sense ofour resolutions Luc says we should first establish goals. Ed.

    Maj Sam Houston: The American Spirit

    In every organization there are some members who are always available to help when the going gets tough. One such member, Maj Sam Houston, served as Professional Development Officer,marshaled planes during SAREXs, and, despite his work schedule, always answers the ca#forhelp. He is one of the squadrons bakers dozen of Can Do guys.

    In Civil Air Patrol, Sam has worn many hats.

    He is a trained technician in EmergencyServices as Observer, Scanner, and RadioOperator. He is also a Pilot, but ashis work schedule keeps him on

    the road through most of theweek, he is not current. As FlightLine Supervisor, Sam donned hisbright orange cap and protectivegear and set a standard for cadetsserving in SAREXs. He hasserved as Mission StaffAssistant,Evaluator , Profess ionalDevelopment Off icer , andsubsequently has assisted theTesting Officer and the current

    PDO, Capt Victor Sabitini. As Victorhas recently taken a short leave foreducational purposes, Sam has steppedback in to help out in the testing part ofProfessional Development, of which heholds the rank of Master. Sams sense ofduty comes from a strong thread of theAmerican spirit.

    Sam Huston was born in Mangum,Oklahoma, which is the county seat of

    Greer County, Oklahoma. My ancestors were involved in the Oklahoma Runand settled in Greer County, he said.Oklahoma Run refers to a period in thelate nineteenth century when the US. government opened up land forownership. According to Wikipedia, TheOklahoma Land Run of 1889 was thefirst land run into the Unassigned Lands

    including several counties of Oklahoma.The land run started at high noon onApril 22, 1889, with an estimated 50,000

    people lined up for theirpiece of the available two

    mil l ion acres . Samspeople had the pioneerspirit. His grandparentsand their descendants,including Sams smallfamily, settled in Greer.

    Sam was born in 1944 justabout the time World WarII, the deadliest conflict

    in history, was winding

    down. I dont remember anything aboutthat, Sam said. but as a grade schoolkid, I had a simple, but happy home. Iremember Dad finding some old pipesand making us a swing set. Anotherpart of the simple life was that eventhough his family lived in town, theyraised chickens for eggs and rabbits formeat. Rabbits taste just like chicken,Sam said.

    Times were simpler in his childhood.

    Garbage collectors were unheard of. Peoplemanaged their own disposal by burningtheir trash in the back yard. Garbage wasoften used in the garden. We burned thetrash in a barrel out by the alley, said Sam.That was my job, and I frequentlyreturned to the house with singed hair

    and eye brows, he added.

    I also remember Dad making a life-sizedsnow horse that we could get on and ride.It was during this time, when I was five years old, that I got my first and only

    bicycle. It was a used one that Dad rebuiltand repainted and, boy, was it a beauty! Iteven had chrome fenders. But with everyblessing there comes a limp. The bicyclehad a simple problem. It was a 26-inchbikeway too big for me, he said. But Ilearned to ride it by sticking one legthrough the frame to the pedal on theother side. Mom and Dad thought that waspretty funny. Two years later, at aged seven,I used that bicycle on my first job. I rode it

    to a dairy farm at the edge of town to getmilk for a neighbor. I got paid twenty centsa trip.

    My junior and senior high school dayswere the days of the Beach Boys, Route 66,and Surfin USA. I was once sent homefrom school for wearing beachcomberpants and a beatnik shirt that stretched theschool dress code a little bit too far. It wasduring this time, when I was twelve, that I

    bought a lawn mower on credit and starteda lawn mowing business. Can you imaginesomeone giving credit to a sixth grader? Inever missed a payment.

    Active in Boy Scouts, Sam was introducedto Colorado during these years. My BoyScout troop came to camp in the RockyMountain National Park, he said.Unfortunately, because his father moved hisfamily to meet the needs of the community

    and his church, they moved to differenttowns ever four or five years to a newchurch assignment. So Sam was unable tocomplete his Eagle.During the 1950s, the Korean war started,but Sam was too young to be involved.

    However, he remembers listening to thenews about the war and worrying.

    In high school, Sam worked in grocerystores and on construction jobs. As I haddone all my life, I played all kinds of sports

    organized and unorganized. I played whatever was popular every season, he

    said. I was a regular at our little YMCA.And because his dad was a preacher, Samattended numerous church camps in thesummer.

    Emerging from an idyllic childhood, Samscollege life was mainly work and study. Hepaid his own way through a private collegein five and a half years. My life was pretty

    busy managing work, sports, school, and, ofcourse, dating, he said. Later, I also foundtime to get married and become a father.

    Wars continue end on end. Of course, Iwas eligible for the draft, he said, as waseveryone in the early 1960s. Vietnam was abiggy. Although Sam had a studentdeferment for part of his college life, hewas also very draft eligible. I was called into report for a physical exam, which I

    passed, he said, But I really dont knowwhy I was never called up.

    After college at Southern NazareneUniversity in Bethany, Oklahoma, Samsdegree in Biology earned him a job at theDow Chemical Company, in Freeport,Texas. As Senior Chemical Technician,he was responsible for the operation,integrity, quality control, laboratoryprocedures, calculations, training of

    personnel, supplies and maintenance oftwo laboratories. Laboratory methodsincluded wet t i trat ion, gaschromatography, flame absorptionspectrophotometry, and gas analysis,ORSAT, procedures. Waste waters,chemical wastes, air pollution, breathing

    air were all monitored as well asproduction quality and quantity, profitand loss analyses, and instrumentationcalibration.

    As a young man, Sams hobbies wererough stock rodeo, motorcycle touring,skydiving, flyin g, music, and camping.He still rides his motorcycle, camps, andplays in the worship band at his church.The skydiving heleaves to his wife,Karen. Besides CivilAir Patrol, Sam also volunteers his timeon the Security

    Committee atchurch, and in thepast has volunteeredto help with SpecialOlympics.

    In graduate school at the University ofDenver, Sam majored in Criminal Justiceand spent twenty-seven years protectingcitizens from crime. Among other duties,he was a HAZMAT and a First Aid First

    Responder . He was honored forMeritorious Service and had severalofficial Commendations for leadership.After numerous dangerous assignments,he retired from law enforcement in 1999.I just got tired of running down alleysand hopping over fences to chase the badguys who had guns or knives, he said. Tosupplement his retirement pay, Sam hasworked for many over-the-road trucking

    firms. And although his schedule is tight,he still manages to serve the needs ofCivil Air Patrol and spend precious hours with his wife, Karen, and their five grandchildren aged two to seventeen.

    We like to do things with them, hesaid, like take walks.

    Sams performance in his manyleadership positions have earned him the

    respect of hiscolleagues. He has beenapproached severa ltimes to be a squadroncommander. Butdesp ite his work

    schedule, his joy inserving humanity keepshim closely attached tothe squadron. And

    although Jeffco is a senior squadron, Samcomes into contact with cadets atSAREXs. Being around the cadets, hesaid is most satisfying as I see theirimprovement because of the training anddevelopment they get in Civil Air Patrol.

    Sams words of wisdom for new membersare, Dont be afraid to ask questions,dont give up, and get involved. If youdont know what to do just ask.

    I just got tired of runningdown alleys and hoppingover fences to chase the

    bad guys who had guns andknives.

    The leading cause of death during winter storms is from automobile or othertransportation accidents. Be prepared for winter by having an emergency kit in each ofyour cars. The kit should include:

    If you have not yet determined your New Years Resolutions, safety should be on the top ofthe list. Especia#y helpful with regard to our recent streak of+eezing weather, theDivision of Emergency Management has established some Winter Preparedness SafetyTi s with re ard to our automobile. Ed.

    batteries), flashlight and extra batteries, blanket, jumper cables, fire extinguisher (5 lb. A-B-C- type), first aid kit, bottled water, non perishable high energy foods like

    granola bars, raisins and peanut butter,

    If a blizzard traps you in your car:

    Pull off the road, set hazard lights to flashing, and hang a distress flag (redbandana or shop towel) from the radio antenna or window. Remain in yourvehicle; rescuers are most likely to find you there.

    Conserve fuel, but run the engine and heater about ten minutes each hour tokeep warm, cracking a downwind window slightly to prevent carbon monoxidepoisoning. Exercise to maintain body heat but don't over-exert. Huddle with otherpassengers and use your coat for a blanket.

    In extreme cold use road maps, seat covers, floor mats, newspapers or extraclothing for covering--anything to provide additional insulation and warmth.

    Turn on the inside dome light so rescue teams can see you at night, but becareful not to run the battery down. In remote areas, spread a large cloth over the

    snow to attract the attention of rescue planes. Do not set out on foot unless you see a building close by where you know you

    can take shelter. Once the blizzard is over, you may need to leave the car and proceed on foot.

    Follow the road if possible. If you need to walk across open country, use distantpoints as landmarks to help maintain your sense of direction.
