COUNTY RIFLE MATCH On Saturday, March 31st, we had 22 4-Her’s in the follow-ing age groups participate in the County Rifle Match: Junior: Kate Gallander, 3rd; Shane Harris, 1st; Robert Leano, 5th; Logan Perry, 2nd; Romeo Weeks, 4th; Inter-mediate: Brian Allen, 4th; Colton Austin, 1st; Justin Gal-lander, 2nd; Nikki Leano, 3rd; Elsie Morris-Thomas, 5th; Senior: Christina Abel, 5th; Brian Barnett, 11th; David Barnett, 7th; Lairen Calhoun, 9th; Matthew Grimes, 3rd; Nicholas Jones, 4th; Ronald Jones, 12th; Charles Leano, 10th; Juliana Leano, 2nd; Andrew Perricone, Nolan Shep-herd, 6th; James Yeary, 1st;. 4-Her’s in the News—Shooting Sports/Shotgun: At the Madison County Shoot held on April 14th-15th participants (pictured left to right) Dal-ton Robinson; Ty Miller; Beau Blanchard - 1st in Whiz-bang, 2nd in Trap, 4th in Skeet & HOA Intermediate; Logan Broussard; Colt Woods - 1st in Whiz-bang, 1st in Skeet, 6th in Trap & HOA Sr. 2 WHEP Project—4-Her’s, Cassie Broussard, Hannah

Broussard, Brian Barnett, David Barnett & Andrew Perricone participated in the Lower Sabine Woodland Clinic where they placed 2nd. David had a High Indi-vidual score. They will at-tend a state contest on April 18th. The 4-Her’s Hannah Brous-sard, Brian Barnett, David Barnett & Andrew Perricone participated in the Wood-lands Forestry competition on April 18th in Nacogdo-ches where they placed 5th out of 12.

YOUTH COUNCIL MEETING

At the Youth Council held on April 16th, Matt Schnell was the guest speaker. Matt is an MMA fighter and was featured on the MTV show “Caged”. He talked about nutri-tion and healthy eating for fighting. Matt also participated in the ice breakers and took pic-tures with the 4-Her’s.

Dayton FFA will hold a Open Jr Heifer, bull and rabbit show

on May 9-12, 2012 at the Anson Rigby Memorial Arena in

Dayton. The entry fee is $15 per head and $3.00 for rabbits.

Buckles and awards will be given. Please call the Extension

office for rules and entry form.

BBQ FUNDRAISER UPDATE

The BBQ Fundraiser was a huge success! Thanks to all who sold tickets, purchased tickets and con-tributed in any way. A great big THANKS to our committee mem-bers, club managers and helpers: Kelli Morgan, Kathy Hardt, Rosa & Lairen Calhoun, Beth West-brook, Joan & Kirk Schiesler, Tam-mi Choate, Shannon & Shelby Sey-mour, especially Buddy Choate, Brian Abney and Paula Guajardo also known as the “pit crew”. Pau-la you’re awesome and as always we couldn’t have done it without you, Brian or Buddy. Both of you put in tireless

hours, work and dedica-tion. Thanks also to St. John Lutheran Church for the use of their facility, and all the 4-H parents, leaders and members for your help. All in all, 279 slabs of ribs, 70 lbs of briskets & 70 pounds or rice were cooked for, 173 dinners, 272 slabs

(including family packs), and over $914 in drawing tick-ets. The winner of the BBQ grill was Melissa Mewa. BBQ King & Queen—We had the coronation for the BBQ King and Queen on April 14th following the BBQ order pick up.. The 2012 King was Logan Pery and Queen was Whitney Choate. The Royal Court is: Christina Abel, Madi-son Barrera, Lairen Calhoun, Katie Cartwright, Alex Guajardo, Shane Harris, Matthew Johnson, Hanson Root, Austin Samaha. Again, thanks to all of you and job well done!!

TRACTOR SUPPLY CLOVER

CAMPAIGN

As part of their con-tinuing support & partnership with the National 4-H Coun-cil and Tractor Sup-p ly Company, (TSC) we will kick off spring with a Paper Clover Pro-motion which starts May 2-13, 2012. For every clover purchased a por-tion will come back to the Jefferson Co. 4-H program. Dur-ing the fall clover promotion, Jeffer-son County 4-H re-ceived proceeds in the amount of $205. Thanks to everyone who sup-ported 4-H by buy-ing clovers when they visited Tractor Supply. We hope you will get the word out and con-tinue to support 4-H during this Spring promotion.

STATE ROUNDUP ENTRIES If you will be attending State Roundup in Lubbock, you will need to register online via 4-H connect by May 11th. A $15 late fee will apply after that date. Please call and let the 4-H office know that you will be attending so we can get a Roundup packet to you to help facilitate your online process. This applies to all contest, including Shooting Sports.

SENIOR LEADERSHIP LAB

“Whole world in our hands” is the theme for the 2012 Senior Leader-ship Lab which will be held on June 26-28, 2012. The purpose of Leadership Lab is intend-ed to help young people develop and practice leadership skills through recreation and education. Activities are designed to b u i l d t e a m w o r k , knowledge and skills, as well as encourage cama-raderie among youth. There will be 4 education-al sessions. The cost of lab is $155 per person and includes 2 nights lodging, cafeteria meals, banquet, educational sup-plies, program activities and 3 t-shirts. No bus transportation will be pro-vided to Sam Houston State University. If inter-ested please register on line via 4-H Connect by May 25th. If you have any questions or need more information call, 835-8461.

RECORD BOOKS & STAR AWARDS

In order to apply for a Star Award you must do a record book. Record books are due to the Extension office by June 18th. Star Award ap-plications are also due on June 27th as well as, Club Scrap Books and Secretary Books.

Star Award interviews tenta-tively scheduled for August 7th, beginning at 6:00 p.m. We encourage everyone that is interested in applying for a Star Award, please do a rec-ord book even if you are not participating in District com-petition. Star Awards are:

4-H Rookie of the Year is to recognize a 4-H’er for outstanding accomplish-ments their 1st year in 4-H, regardless of age.

4-H Bronze Star—9-10 years old as of Aug. 31st of the current 4-H year.

4-H Silver Star—11-13 yrs. Old as of Aug. 31st of the

current 4-H year.

I Dare You Award must be at least 14 on Aug. 31st of current 4-H year.

4-H Gold Star—Must be at least 15 on Aug. 31st of the current 4-H year.

Club Awards:

Club Scrapbook—Clubs use their creativity to prepare a scrapbook depicting the involvement of their membership during the current 4-H year. One cash prize will be award-ed to Club winner to use as they deem appropriate.

Club Secretary Records—keeping of accurate, neat club meeting records pro-vides an opportunity for Club Secretaries to sub-mit their records for an award and their records will also be displayed at the annual County recog-nition program.

ON-LINE RECORD KEEPING TRAINING

Anyone interested in learning the new Texas 4-H Record

Keeping System should attend the training on May 29th .

This on-line system will allow 4-Her’s to complete their

entire record keeping process online it. Please call and
