GENERAL NEWS

2020 Pizza & Pie Fundraiser We are hoping to move forward with the Pizza/Pie Fundraiser this year! For now, we are waiting to get permission from the state office to continue. When the time comes, we are doing things a little differently. First, you should know that Poyer’s will only be offering gift certificates this year. Second, you (as a family) will submit your orders directly to us by using a Google Form. Once you’ve sold all the pizzas and pie certificates you want, just use the link to submit your orders to the Extension Office. In the past, you’ve submitted this information to your club pizza/pie captain but you don’t have to do that this year! Also, the Extension office will be collecting your money. We will share the Google link and the order forms as soon as possible.

Dairy Promotion Funding

4-H Club Flyers In addition to the countywide brochures, we have developed 4-H Club flyers that are specific to the club experience. If your club hasn’t sent in pictures for your flyer, do so soon! We’d love to help you promote your club as the new 4-H year starts.

4-H Clubs to Create Newest Cedar Crest Ice Cream Flavor: Entries Now Being Accepted Cedar Crest Ice Cream, Cedarburg, Wisconsin, and the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation have teamed up again to present the “Cedar Crest Ice Cream 4-H Flavor Contest” for Wisconsin 4-H clubs. More than 1600 clubs are eligible to create and submit a flavor ‘recipe’ with the top clubs named

as finalists, and the top flavor produced for summer 2021. According to Brenda Scheider, Executive Director of the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation, the contest is a great opportunity for 4-H youth to work together to develop and name their flavor. “The most exciting part of the contest is the winning flavor will be available through Cedar Crest beginning next July.” The annual contest has already yielded popular flavors including Deep Woods, created by the Badger Boosters 4-H Club of West Bend and Wisconsin Campfire S’mores, created by the Springbrook 4-H Club of New Richmond. This year’s winning flavor was Road Trip Wisconsin, created by the Trail Blazers 4-H Club of Holmen in LaCrosse County. A panel of ice cream experts chosen by Cedar Crest judges the entries. The company manufacturers more than 80 flavors of ice cream, along with frozen custard, sherbet and sorbet at its Manitowoc, Wisconsin, plant, and distributes products in five states. Many of the flavors now produced by Cedar Crest, including Wisconsin Campfire S’mores and Big Muddy, are a result of the contest. More information and the entry form are available at www.cedarcresticecream.com. Entries are due by November 13, 2020. The winner will be announced in December 2020.

More Time at Home this Fall? Help Clear the Street Leaves Before the Rain. Spread the Word! Dane County and the Madison Area Municipal Stormwater Partnership are continuing efforts to keep our streets leaf-free before the rain this fall. With more residents spending time at home, it’s a great time of year to protect our waters. If you live in an area with lots of terrace trees, make a commitment to remove street leaves before the storm. It’s an easy, yet very effective action that those of us living in the urban environment can take to reduce the amount of phosphorus that washes into our waters each fall. When it rains, stormwater flows through leaf piles in streets creating a “leaf tea” that is rich in dissolved phosphorus. This "leaf tea" travels through storm sewers making its way to our lakes, rivers and streams and can cause our waters to become green, murky and unhealthy. If we all take action to keep streets leaf-free, we could cut the amount of phosphorus in urban stormwater by almost half. Join us this fall and spread the word in your community! We have lots of tools to help including: electronic rain alert reminders, flyers, door hangers, yard signs, template articles and social media posts. Check out our Leaf-free Streets Partner Toolkit for more information.
