ANTI-BULLYING LAWS

Intent is to strengthen standards for preventing, reporting,

investigating, and responding to incidents of bullying and reduce

the risk of suicide among students • Effective September 2011

"Harassment, intimidation or bullying" means any gesture, any written,

verbal or physical act, or any electronic communication, whether it be a

single incident or a series of incidents, that is reasonably perceived as

being motivated either by any actual or perceived characteristic, such

as race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, gender, sexual

orientation, gender identity and expression, or a mental, physical or

sensory [handicap]disability, or by any other distinguishing

characteristic, that takes place on school property*, at any school-

sponsored function [or],on a school bus, or off school grounds* as

provided for in section 16 of P.L.2010, CHAPTER 122, that substantially

disrupts or interferes with the orderly operation of the school or the rights

of other students and that:

SCHOOL TEAM DUTIES

Receives any HIB complaints reported to principal*

Educates the community (i.e., students, teachers, administrators, parents) to prevent and address HIB

Participates in training (both required and requested)

Collaborates with anti-bullying coordinator in data collection and development of policies to prevent and address HIB

Other duties related to HIB requested by principal or anti-bullying coordinator

*Parent team members may only participate in activities that do not compromise student confidentiality.

Focus Schools

A Focus School is a school that has room for improvement in areas that are specific to the school. As part of the process, Focus Schools will receive targeted and tailored solutions to meet the school’s unique needs. There are 183 Focus schools.

• Lowest Subgroup Performance: schools whose two lowest-performing subgroups rank among the lowest combined proficiency rates in the state. Schools in this category have an overall proficiency rate for these lowest-performing subgroups of 29.2% or lower.

FOCUS SCHOOL REQUIREMENTS - UPDATE

Hired a social worker, 2 additional intervention teachers

(Received one), and full time security guard.

ELA and Math blocks must be uninterrupted 90 minutes with

consistent readers and writers workshop focus and math mini-

lessons and centers - meaning changes to the existing master

prep schedule. - New Schedule will reflect

A 40 minute dedicated intervention block designed to allow time

set aside each day to work on improving your students ELA and

Math work and knowledge. While connected to the core blocks,

this is an independently planned data driven block. - New

Schedule will reflect

Additional Programs: Family Friendly Center, K-3 Academy,

Tutoring, Parent Academy – any more to come.
