(After the rain, the earth hardens)

A Japanese proverb this may be, but so too is it a way to think about architecture as we know it today. For the past few years it has been raining hard, and now the storm is over, the ground we stand on is more solid than before.

We’ve had a very active and productive year securing exciting new commissions, finishing projects and progressing with others. With experienced individuals and fresh graduates joining the practice, our team has grown and our offices are buzzing with activity; they’re occupied by forward-thinking architects, technologists interior designers, landscapers and support staff, who, as the cogs of construction industry begin to turn at a rapid pace once again, are busy transforming ‘spaces’ into ‘places’.

We look forward to September when three of our Education projects open their doors to the students; the Music Building at Hymers College, the Department of Journalism at the University of Sheffield and the Apollo Studio Academy at East Durham College.

Relationships with new clients have been formed too, notably with J.R Pickstock with whom we are working on three Mixed-use Student Accommodation schemes in Plymouth, Cambridge and Colchester.

TOM RHyS JOnESManaging Director

As well as securing commissions from new clients, we continue to forge and retain strong relationships, with over 75% of our turnover coming from repeat business or referrals, a testament to our ability to deliver quality projects on time, to budget and in a professional and friendly manner.

So what’s new for 2014/15? We are investing in our team and resources, ensuring that our software is up to date and that our staff are at the fore of their specialist areas. We’re implementing BIM across the practice so that we can increase our rate of collaboration with clients and fellow contractors. Our investment in this software is supported by the appointment of a BIM Development Manager to train our staff and ensure that we are working to the highest standards.

And so I look forward to another productive year, and, as always, express my thanks to our clients and partnering consultants.

Here’s to strong foundations...

Performance factsheet

Our target turnover was £1.3million, with the intention of achieving a profit (before tax) of £195k.

The actual turnover achieved was £1.9 million, with a profit of £274k.

The strength of our diverse client base was demonstrated by a total absence of bad debt and the average time to collect payments was 39 days.

Our most prolific clients were J.R Pickstock, Baxter and King , HG Construction, East Riding College, Centro, Pennine Property Partnership and Henry Boot Developments Ltd.

We were not reliant on any single project for more than 13% of our turnover although ten of the larger projects, together contributed 53% of the turnover.

The largest project we worked on during the year was the Student Accommodation scheme at King Edward Quay, Colchester, for J.R Pickstock.

75.6% of our turnover came from repeat commissions. Our longest standing client with whom we were active during the year was Henry Boot Developments.

ACCOMODATIOnJ.R Pickstock

Jefferson Sheard is working alongside J.R Pickstock to construct a state-of-the-art mixed use development which will incorporate Student Accommodation, Retail and Restaurant facilities as well as a communal amenity space open to the public.

The 765-bed development addresses an increasing demand for high-quality student accommodation to provide for the students of Essex University - a renowned research university with over 11,000 students, 3,000 of whom are postgraduates.

Off-site construction techniques provide structural modular room pods which form the primary structure for the building. The technique ensures factory-quality internal finishing, speed of erection and cost and programme certainty.

BEESTOn TOWn CEnTRE - REDEvELOPMEnTHenry Boot Developments

We have been engaged by Henry Boot Developments to produce designs for the £2.7m redevelopment and refurbishment of The Square shopping centre in Beeston, nottingham.

The much-needed redevelopment calls for the partial demolition and refurbishment of the existing shopping centre – a 1970s concrete and brick structure, which has not been refurbished for over three decades. The contemporary overhaul will attract new retailers and shoppers to the area.

The redevelopment will bring a much needed rejuvenation to the town centre, possibly stimulating further developments to the south of The Square.

LEARnInG RESOURCE CEnTREHymers College, Hull

Hymers College has engaged Jefferson Sheard to design a state-of-the-art Learning Resource Centre (LRC) in line with their strategic vision of creating a school ‘fit for purpose’ in 2030.

The £2.85 million project, which will comprise of a facility fit for the 21st Century to reflect the school’s architectural heritage and academic prowess, will incorporate a multi-function hall, flexible teaching spaces and a library.

Much care and attention has been paid by Clare Ailward, Jefferson Sheard’s Director of Design, to produce a design which will complement the school’s distinctive architectural style. The proposed use of terracotta, stone coloured mullions and brise soleil is a modern take on the stone mullions and terracotta detailing of the Listed Building and Memorial Hall.

“I have been so impressed by the architects at Jefferson Sheard who have listened carefully to the school’s brief and have delivered everything we wanted. The design for the building is stunning and, on completion, will inspire our youngsters. I cannot thank them enough!”

Mr David Elstone, Headmaster at Hymers College, Hull

The £1.9m project includes the provision of a new four stand glazed bus concourse, public toilets and waiting area, along with two remote bus stands.

Further feasibility work has been undertaken to examine options for future development of the railway building, including a full re-build option which unites the ticketing and waiting areas of both the bus and rail facilities with a new, contemporary structure.

BECK PLACE, FInCHLEyBaxter & King / Catalyst Housing

Jefferson Sheard has been appointed by Baxter and King to design a £6m residential scheme for Catalyst Housing Group.

The contemporary one, two and three bedroom apartments will be available via the popular Shared Ownership scheme, offering individuals who live or work in the London Borough of Barnet a flexible route into home ownership.

This scheme comes at a time of crisis in the London housing market as first time buyers struggle to get on the property ladder.

The building includes 19 affordable flats, 41 shared ownership flats, covered parking and a landscaped terrace.

The anticipated completion date is February 2015.

BEvERLEy CAMPUS, EAST RIDInG COLLEGEEast Riding College

The new £14m Beverley Campus at East Riding College has begun on site, with the anticipated completion date scheduled for July 2015.

The ambitious project, which is part of the wider Flemingate redevelopment project, incorporates in its designs 30 teaching rooms equipped with specialist IT facilities; a state-of-the-art Learning Resource Centre; industry-standard beauty salons, a restaurant and an Energy Technology Centre (ETC).

The ETC is set to be a landmark building within the low carbon sector achieving a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’ through its use of existing and emerging green technologies in its construction. not only will the ETC provide students with ‘Green technical workshops’ and a ‘live rig’ workshop, the building will also provide facilities for small to medium enterprises and corporate support services.

Client satisfaction

We have received excellent feedback, which is reflected in our Key Performance Indicators.

During 2013 / 2014 we are pleased to have increased our average scores on three of our Key Performance Indicators.

Our average scores for Overall Performance, value for Money and Quality of Service rose.

In comparison to last year’s scores, our Timely Delivery and Health & Safety Awareness fell slightly, and whilst these are minor differences, we are not complacent and remain fully committed to exploring the reasons for any change in levels of client satisfaction.

In between all of these exciting events several of our projects won awards:

stourbridge interchange - ciht west midlands major project awards 2013 - winnerand ihe (institute of highway engineers) awards 2013 - winner

“Over the years, the RICS Awards have attracted some outstanding and exemplar entries, and despite the ongoing uncertainty of the economic climate, this year was no different. It just goes to show that Yorkshire and Humber is certainly not short of talented property professionals as we continue to produce impressive built schemes that set the bar for other UK regions.

The exceptional team behind Barnsley College’s Old Mill Lane Campus should be extremely proud of themselves. It is an exemplar project of significant benefit to the local community.”

Exceeding expectation

This year two of our Further Education projects were officially opened by members of the Royal family and one of our oldest and most well-known Sheffield projects, the Moore Street Electricity Substation gained a Grade II Listed status.

“This is a proud day for us and our founding father, Bryan Jefferson - it is extremely rare for an architect to be so honoured by having a building listed during his lifetime.”

Public appraisal for the Substation didn’t stop there. Bryan Jefferson’s iconic work of Brutalism was featured in the exhibiton Brutal and Beautiful, orgnaised by the English Heritage and RIBA, and was also a subject in Dear Sheffield. and exhibiiton held to celebrate the Sheffield Society of Architects 125th birthday.

The exhibition was organised by Dr Steve Parnell in conjunction with Sheffield Design Week.Sheffielders were invited to nominate their dearest places in the city by submitting a postcard, and we were not surprised to hear that the Substation made more than one appearance.

The Brutalist building was designed by Bryan Jefferson in the 1960s as part of a Post-war scheme to regenerate the city and has since become a much-loved character on the city’s skyline – perhaps an emblem of Sheffield’s love affair with concrete.

“I rejoined the Jefferson Sheard team in April after a period of working for Aecom Design Build.

I am pleased to be bringing my knowledge of Building Information Modelling (BIM) to the team, and look forward to implementing a training scheme throughout the practice in the near future.

I’m currently working on an Education project with Kier - Bessacarr Primary School. This BIM-enabled scheme involves the design of five new classrooms; alterations to the kitchen area; extensions to the car park; external landscaping works and phasing of classroom provision.

BIM is a great resource, facilitating the collaborative process and enabling the co-ordination and sharing of project information across all consultants.”

Alex is currently studying part-time for his RIBA Part II at Oxford Brookes University. Key projects for Jefferson Sheard that Alex has been involved with include the impressive new Music Building at Hymers College, Hull, the secure cycle hub at Selly Oak Railway Station for Centro, and the refurbishment of Mappin Street for the University of Sheffield.

“I joined Jefferson Sheard in June 2013 after completing my BA (Hons) degree in Interior Design at Sheffield Hallam University.

I have gained some extremely varied and valuable experiences in my time here so far. I have had the opportunity to see a project through from initial concept stage to tender, and soon completion (Apollo Studio Academy, Peterlee).

It has been very satisfying and rewarding to be able to contribute to every stage of the design process; from developing the initial schemes for interview to producing final drawings, visuals and finishes boards on completion.

I look forward to broadening my knowledge and skill set further within this industry in order to push forward and further my career while getting many exciting projects under my belt.”

HELO Programme, London

In 2013 we decided to take action to improve our marketing activities and increase our London office involvement in the marketing process. We formed links with the University College London (UCL) by joining their Higher Education London Outreach (HELO) Programme, delivered by UCL Advances and supported by London Business School.

The HELO Programme matches SMEs with students who have skills and knowledge in specific areas. We worked with a group of UCL students to develop some unique and inspiring approaches to our potential marketing activities in London, some of which have now been incorporated into our Marketing Strategy to be implemented in the near future.

The project allowed us to get an external view on our London based marketing practices, while giving students the chance to acquire some practical experience in tackling real issues that businesses deal with every day.

Grand Départy Cycle Challenge for Marie Curie

Our community matters to us. This year has been a busy one but we’ve still found time to contribute to some great organisations and charities.

Tour de France fever hit the nation and it didn’t escape Jefferson Sheard. We held a week-long celebration of all things French and all things cycling whilst fundraising for the Tour de France’s charitable partner, Marie Curie Cancer Care, a brilliant charity dedicated to the care of people with terminal illnesses.

We were very pleased to raise almost £600 in a week. The cause is one that is close to our hearts, as the Marie Curie staff provided an enormous amount of love, care and comfort to our good friend and colleague, Angela Jim, who died of breast cancer in 2007.

Jefferson Sheard agreed to match £1 to every mile cycled by the Jefferson Sheard team to and from work during the week. We set ourselves a target of 340 miles – the length of the British stage of the Tour de France. Initially the figure was daunting, but the team pulled together, achieving a combined mileage of 439.7 miles.

Inspiring the next generation & caring for our community

We have been providing work experience •placements for students from local schools, colleges and universities. We know that that this practical experience is valuable to students.

We have donated money to Circus Starr, a social •enterprise enabling disadvantaged and disabled children the chance to attend the circus for the day.

At the end of 2013 Jefferson Sheard made •a charitable donation to the national Deaf Children’s Society (nDCS).

Sustainable Design

We continue to follow the Building Research Establishment (BRE)’s advice on sustainable design, achieving the best possible BREEAM rating on each building we create. We follow a strategy of rigorously modelling and appraising all of the essential sustainability criteria identified within “A Sustainability Checklist for Developments” (BRE Centre for Sustainable Construction, Building Research Establishment, Watford, 2002).

We always look to incorporate many sustainable measures and renewable technologies to ensure that the carbon footprint is lower than current Building Regulation minimum standards.

Jefferson Sheard has received numerous awards cementing our success in sustainable design and environmentally efficient buildings, we have also received awards that recognise our business as showing evidence of our commitment to and achievements in sound environmental practice.

Taking responsibility

Sustainable Practice

As part of our wider Environmental Policy, we have continued this year to support Dogs Trust by recycling all of our printer cartridges through the charity.

Over 2 million printer cartridges are thrown away in the UK alone every year. Dogs Trust recycles our printer cartridges in partnership with electronic waste management company, Reclaim-It, with every recycled cartridge providing enough money to feed a dog for a week.

We have also persevered with our responsible travel procedures, where employees are required to take public transport or car share wherever possible in order to limit our contribution to CO2 emmissions.

The paper products we use in the workplace are recycled wherever possible and come from sustainable sources, and we make the effort to use energy saving light bulbs in all of our offices.
