Jefferson Wildlife Association represents many sportsmen who u»&Bayou Meto for hunting fishing and other outdoor recreation. Thousandsof people use this vast expance of woodlands, swamps and wetlands. Thereare many farms along the Bayou and many people live in close proximityof the Bayou. There is a continuous bottomland hardwood forest in themiddle and lower reaches of the Bayou of which the 33,000 Acre WildlifeManagement Area is a small part. The vast floodplain of the Bayou is avaluable resource for migratory waterfowl, deer, turkey, squirrels, fur-bearing animals and other wildlife.
Our organization has seen a copy of a letter to EPA from RepresentativeMike Wllson of Jacksonville in which he wrote that no one used the Bayouor cared about it. We want you to know that thousands care and want BayouMeto to be able to recover from Dioxin contamination.
If the hot spots of dioxin laden silt in the upper Bayou and floodplain were contained as recommended in " C " of your "Alternatives ForWaterways and Flood Plains" perhaps nature would clean up the lower Bayouin time: however Jefferson Wildlife Association feels additional studiesare needed to determine if Alternative " C " is feasible or what otherAlternatives might be available.
On very short notice our members have collected the attached petitionssigned by people who care about Bayou Meto. If the comment time could beextended many more people will be able to participate. Most people we havereceived comments from agree that the Jacksonville contamination should becleaned up on site but no by-products of the burning of dioxin should bedumped in Bayou Meto.
