Welcome to another wonderful summer of theatre at the Station Arts Centre. Daniel Macdonald has crafted a story from the prairies about our sense of place and what it means to come home. Blow Wind is a play that we all can relate to; it shows the heartbreak and humor dementia can evoke and how families dealing with mental illness can be broken or brought closer together. We are proud to have this timeless Saskatchewan play on our stage this summer!

We would like to thank Daniel Macdonald for sharing his talent and creativity with us. Thanks also to Eileen Laverty for adding richness to this story through music and to Alison Jenkins for bringing this music to life through the characters. Thank you to our amazing cast and crew, staff, Board of Directors, supporters and volunteers who have made this summer theatre show a success. Can you believe this is our 30th summer theatre production? Thanks to you, our patrons, for keeping the arts alive here on the prairies! We are so glad you’ve joined us. Enjoy the show!

NOTES FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT/DIRECTOR

Blow Wind began as a tiny idea I had about four years ago when Skye Brandon, Angus Ferguson and I bashed our heads together about what kind of play I might want to write for Dancing Sky Theatre in Meacham. It occurred to me at the time, that shaping a play that had, at its centre, the matriarch of a fading Saskatchewan farm would be a good place to start. To twist a typical farm story by putting an aging woman at the centre of it and then to connect her own memory with the memories of the farm itself felt…right. For Shakespeare lovers it may have a bit of a King Lear flavour to it but at its core it’s really just a story about a farm and a family and some secrets.

It is truly exciting to be able to see my play remounted in a lovely place like Rosthern and Station Arts just a year after the first production. In that production singer/songwriter Eileen Laverty composed several songs for the show and to me it made the show truly inspiring to be a part of; so much so that now I can’t think about Blow Wind without hearing those songs. I’m excited to bring the play and its music to a new audience just “down the road”. Along with music, the poem woven into the play is written by Canadian poet Roo Borson and is called The Wind, Growing Up.

As Sarah says in the play, “where do they all go?” It’s a simple question that has so many connotations when it comes to life, love, loved ones, and memory. It speaks to the idea that everything we do, everything we love, and everyone who leaves us somehow stays with us as well. I truly hope when you leave Station Arts after the play that you take a part of it with you. Maybe, like the wind, it takes you places you never expected.

I’d like to thank Nicole, Josie and everyone at Station Arts for their support and belief in my play. Also love and thanks to an amazing cast and crew and of course Eileen, and Angus for being a part of it from the start. Love to Melanie and Little X, two people, who like the wind, have taken me to places I would never have expected.

Nicole Zalesak – Costume Design

Eileen Laverty – Musical Composition

An inspired singer and storyteller, Eileen charms all ages with her soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics. Originally from Belfast, Northern Ireland, Eileen’s Irish roots run deep; however, she finds inspiration on the prairies which she has called home for many years. She began her career with Saskatoon-based traditional Celtic band, but naturally gravitated towards the singer-songwriter tradition of storytelling. Her unique brand of folk music has led to television and film features, and landed her performances with a diverse range of artists over the years. Laverty’s charismatic attitude combined with her soulful sound has her ranked among the elite of Canadian Folk singers, writes CBC Radio producer Shauna Powers. Most recently, Laverty was featured in the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestras Pops Series, with a whole night dedicated to Laverty’s own music, arranged by acclaimed composer Allan Gilliland. Mark Turner, Executive Director of the SSO said of the show, “This is one of the best shows you’ll see this season because of its brilliant songs with a massive wall of music. [It’s] her natural ability to speak honestly through her songs you can’t help but love the experience.”
