Within the tropical and richly historic environment of Bali, Jenggala Keramik has emerged from a small experimental cottage industry in 1976 to a uniquely refined company of the twenty-first century. A strong forward-thinking sensibility brought together three creative minds of different backgrounds: the late Brent Hesselyn - an artist and potter from New Zealand,

the late Wija Waworuntu - a local hotel magnet who contributed in developing the business, and Ade Waworuntu - Wija’s daughter, who contributed in inspiring the Jenggala’s product design to be contemporary yet inserting social aspect and tradition.

Over the past three decades, Jenggala continues to innovate and adhere to the core values of design and quality upon which it was founded to cope with the globalized marketplace. They keep the spirit to produce high quality and well thought-out designs by welcoming various international and local artists to contribute to Jenggala’s development that would enhance the shared spaces and valued traditions for people from diverse and varied background.

Jenggala designs are on the front lines of contemporary trends, aiming to invent products that will appeal and endure. Over the years, it has perfected all of its own clay bodies using fine raw

materials, which are shaped with high technical skills. Besides the eight kilns in use to assure the right temperature, each piece is inspected to meet the desired value of good design, durability, and safety.

Jenggala Keramik is located in Jimbaran, south of Ngurah Rai International Airport . As a factory, it employs more than a hundred staff members, from those who handle the forming processes until firing; everyone working under one roof. The temperature during the day is rather warm (27-350C), and mild at night (22-270C). Public transportation modes are available and easily accessible. Many types of food vendors, from Indonesian, Thai, and Western, are located within walking distance. A supermarket and a small shopping mall are available in the same area. However, artists may rent a motorcycle or a car and request to be accompanied by a guide or a liaison officer (LO), to travel to farther destinations.

For the duration of the residency, the artist may request assistance from the in-house designer, photographer, and/or graphic designer. People around the studio are very friendly, caring, and intimate; typical characters of a rural community. The languages used in daily life are Balinese (local language) and Indonesian. Although the villagers don’t necessarily have the skills to converse in English, they are very friendly and are accustomed to interacting with foreigners. Besides, there will be a liaison officer (LO) to accompany the artist to communicate and interact with local residents.
