LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY

T he Jenkins Foundation is dedicated to improving the health and wellness of the Greater Richmond region. We work in collaboration with many nonprofit leaders, health care professionals and other foundations

to support a variety of organizations essential to building a healthy and thriving region. Last year alone, we proudly awarded nearly $1.5 million in grants to 33 deserving local nonprofits.

Our board believes that continuous study of health trends and a focused grantmaking strategy are what allow us to make the greatest impact. As we strive to contribute to the overall health and safety of residents in the metro Richmond region, we recognize that this entails a broad range of services and our grants reflect this. Recent funding has enabled a local farm to grow and distribute fresh produce to underserved neighborhoods, area schools to implement bullying prevention programs and health clinics to provide both preventative and acute care health services to low-income individuals and families.

Our ability to make a difference is dependent on the many people who put our resources to work every day. It is because of your hard work and commitment that we feel fortunate to be a part of such a generous community. We are inspired by the results we have achieved thus far and we look forward to continuing our work together to further enhance the quality of life in our region. Hanover Safe Place $37,000To provide case management, after-care services and part-time counseling to community-based clients and shelter families.

Henrico CASA $25,000To support the recruitment, screening and training of 30 additional volunteer advocates.

South Richmond Adult Day Care Center $23,000To provide Care Scholarships, which support the cost of adult day care for vulnerable older adults.

United Methodist Urban Ministries of Richmond $25,000To support Shalom Farms in increasing self-sufficiency and access to local fruits and vegetables.

Virginia Association of Free Clinics $10,000To assist free clinics in researching and evaluating appropriate elec-tronic health records (EHR) systems.

YWCA of Richmond $50,000To support the Regional Hospital Accompaniment Program, a collaborative effort with Hanover Safe Place and Safe Harbor that provides critical follow-up counseling and referral services to victims of sexual and domestic violence.

FAMILY CARE • 4,097 Medical VisitsLast year, Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services provided over 4,000 medical visits for underinsured and underserved patients with acute and chronic medical conditions.

GRANT PRIORITIES

The Jenkins Foundation is committed to expanding access to community-based services through programs and organizations that have the potential to make a significant

impact on the quality of health in our region, especially for uninsured, underserved, or vulnerable populations. The Foundation’s funding priorities fall under two focus areas:

• Access to Health Care Services—The Foundation’s primary goal is to support access to health education and prevention services, mental health care, oral health care and primary care services.

• Key Community Health Issues—The Foundation seeks to reduce risky behaviors and promote safe and healthy environments by supporting substance abuse treatment and prevention, unintended pregnancy prevention and violence prevention.

In addition, the Foundation is committed to the long-term viability of the organizations it supports, and will consider capacity building grants that strengthen an agency’s ability to better serve its clients. The Foundation will also consider a limited number of proposals outside the above stated focus areas.

HEALTHY FOODS • 140,000 ServingsUnited Methodist Urban Ministries of Richmond’s Shalom Farms has grown from producing 16,000 lbs of fresh fruits and vegetables in 2010 to 43,000 lbs in 2012, yielding approximately 140,000 servings.
