“For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. Through Him you believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and glorified Him, and so your faith and hope are in God.” I Peter 1:18-21

As we enter the Easter season of 2020, we find ourselves faced with one of the greatest challenges that has ever impacted our great country. A microscopic virus has literally brought the world to a standstill, and we’re all feeling the effects of it – from shortages of items at the grocery store; to businesses closing and people losing jobs; or the worst possible consequence of losing a relative or family member to the Coronavirus. Everywhere we turn, people are anxious, and even afraid, about how the virus will impact their lives. While it is prudent to be cautious about this current pandemic, it is important to not walk in fear – because fear is the opposite of faith. Easter is still about the sacrifice made by the Son of God for all of mankind, and no worldwide crisis can in any way change the importance of Jesus’ suffering and death on our behalf….nor can it detract from the miracle of Christ’s resurrection! The scripture from First Peter quoted above says that it is through the innocent blood of Jesus that we can have faith and hope in God. Faith is a conviction of the absolute truthfulness of God; and hope is the confident expectation that God’s promises in His Word will come to pass. Take salvation, for instance. It is based upon one’s faith that Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross paid for our sins; and then our hope is the anticipation of eternal life for all who believe in Him (John 3:16). We may not be able to gather in our churches this Easter, or even get together with family and friends to celebrate this foundation of our faith – Jesus’ death and resurrection. We may have to avoid gathering with others, but we can, and must, hold fast to our faith and hope in God. In the end, that is what will bring us through any trial or challenge that we face, and it will confirm to our hearts that God is truly in control.

As I mention above, the Coronavirus pandemic has certainly changed things in our Jenkins-owned facilities, as it has in homes and businesses around the world. Beginning on March 11th, outside visitors were restricted from entering our buildings. Unfortunately, that includes resident and tenant family members, but everyone has been very understanding that our motive is the protection of our vulnerable elderly population. Jenkins employees are screened at the start of their shift each day by having their temperature taken and by being asked if they have any symptoms of respiratory illness. Since nursing home admissions have been limited significantly in recent weeks, we have moved some residents to available rooms so that we could create an isolated unit within the facility to care for any of our residents who would test positive for Coronavirus. This would allow the complete segregation of affected residents from others in the facility. We have adequate supplies of personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect staff in the event they would need to care for anyone with the virus. Currently, we are also practicing social distancing in our resident activities and dining. All deliveries of supplies and medications are restricted to our main lobby, which serves as a buffer from the rest of the building. Finally, most medical visits by physicians are now taking place electronically through the use of virtual visits via iPads. Those are just some of the precautions we are taking to ensure the safety of our residents and tenants that we serve, as well as our staff. But we realize that our best defense against this virus is through prayer that God will protect the people who live and work here. We humbly ask that you join us by lifting up Jenkins during your personal prayer times.

Some major projects that we have planned for this year have been put on hold for now until the threat of this virus is past. A remodeling of some resident rooms on 2nd and 3rd floors of our middle building was set to begin on March 16, but that has been postponed for now. Also, we are looking forward to the installation of a new state-of-the-art nurse call system, but that project has also been delayed at this time. Those projects will hopefully resume later this year. In the meantime, we will do whatever we can to care for and encourage our residents and tenants. This crisis will pass and, hopefully, we’ll all be stronger because of it. I truly believe that God brings about good from situations like this, and if it turns our nation back to Him it will be well worth the momentary suffering.

May God bless you all as we remember the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ!

200 Maple Place by a guest writer For 48 years we loved and lived in our Skyline Drive home. Mac vowed, “I’m going to live here til the end of my days...the only way I’m leaving is feet first!!” 2017 My own health crisis signaled: change coming. So, we found a new HOME in 200 Maple Place. We have such congenial new friends, good food made by the staff every day, caring staff and social contact every day. “Living here is a ‘good fit’ for the two of us. It’s HOME SWEET HOME”, Mac would say. February 2020 Sad to say that Mac died. Now my friends and family are here at Maple Place. Life is continuing and this is my HOME SWEET HOME—200 Maple Place. Helen K. Miller Townview Apartments by Robin Briggs, Mgr.

Greetings! We have very active tenants so the recent suggestions of social distancing has put a damper on many things, as with everyone but we will get through these trying times. We are anxiously waiting for spring and some much-needed sunshine. Looking forward to getting some flowers planted and brightening things up outside and on the faces of our tenants. We want to wish everyone a happy and healthy Easter——a time of new beginnings!

Serenity…

Matthew 11:28-30

Years ago some of our friends at New Life in Ohio taught us the serenity prayer that they shared on Tuesday evenings. It’s the prayer that asks, “LORD, Please grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.” In this ever changing world that challenges serenity at the times when we need it the most, I am reminded of what Jesus shared the night before the cross. He promised that after He finished His earthly mission to save us, and returned to His Father in heaven, He and the Father would send the Holy Spirit in Jesus Name, to teach us all things and to remind us of everything He said. So, In His Presence, through the Holy Spirit, “His peace He would leave with us, His peace He would give us, not as the world gives.” So that in Him we might find joy and hope in the midst of fears, griefs & worldly troubles. Sister Joan Chittister ( please see below) in her devotional “The Monastic Way” for January of this year, said that this serenity that Jesus offers us in His Presence through The Holy Spirit “ is the ability to stand unshaken in the middle of a turbulent world. Serenity that is not non-disturbance, but rather the ability to not be disturbed by the disturbances around us.” “And so in today’s culture of chaos, as we live in a 24 hour news cycle in which anything can happen at any time, as we spend our lives multi-tasking, which we know now doesn’t work, and as we find ourselves unceasingly with more activities and less time to do them well, this same life lived in Him finds serenity in the awareness that Emmanuel– God with us- is with us now. Even if wherever we are at this moment, the ground is shifting under our feet.” Sister Joan Chittister The Monastic Way January 2020 monasticway.org Benetvision 814-459-5994 [email protected]

That is the serenity of which the storms of this life can never overwhelm us, because it is the Peace of His Presence that Jesus prepared for us on the cross and delivered to us out of the empty tomb. It is the peace He pours into our hearts every time, despite whatever present storm that sur-rounds us, as we discover once again, the wonder of His Presence and His grace within us, and simp-ly say, “Thank you Lord!” Scott Dempster, Serving as Chaplain of Jenkins Living Center
